I have arguably the most useless of higher education degrees know to man; the MBA. I do, however, have found memories of one teaching method often used and abused in the program. It is the MBA case study, where (at least in my favorite form) the worst and most egregious mistakes and abuses of organizations are documented for students’ amusement and supposed learning. Ford’s exploding car, Apple’s $10,000 computer, and of course, Atari’s infamous videogame.
So, in that vein, I greeted the New York Post’s article that the Knicks are reportedly looking to buy out the remainder of Larry Brown’s contact and install Isiah Thomas as the Knicks new head coach with a twinge of sadness. Sure, there will be some laughs as we watch Thomas try to run the “it’s your mess, now you do something with it†Knicks next season. But it’s also an indication that this is the beginning of the end for Thomas. Surely, his installation as head coach provides an out for owner James Dolan when the Knicks inevitably suck it up again next year. And that means Thomas’ three year case study on how NOT to run a basketball team will also come to an end. So enjoy and learn from Isiah Thomas while you can, because, with all certainly, no one will give Thomas an opportunity to run another organization into the ground… right?
