Can’t Get No Respect

If you happened to check out the GMTR Player Rater today, you may have noticed a somewhat surprising name at the top of the list. A guy who gets no respect in most fantasy circles – not even from us (granted, it was Sven). For at least today (but possibly for a while), third/fourth round pick Carmelo Anthony is currently the best fantasy player in the world. While he’s still not hitting any threes, blocking shots, or grabbing a huge amount of rebounds, the other facets of his game are running on all cylinders. I could gush like a teenage girl – he’s averaging over 30 a game, the assists are up, he’s picking 2 a game, he’s hitting over half his shots, he was the Western Conference Player of the Week on November 27 for the fourth time in his career, he’s single handedly been saving the cornrow, and I heard on his days off he heals the sick using only the power of imagination.

I could gush, but the truth is that I didn’t come close to drafting Anthony in any league. “He’s a chucker who doesn’t play defense, I’d rather have AK.” “Yeah, the points are nice, but what else does he bring to the table?” No respect.

So, starting today, Carmelo, you have my respect. I like your game, your shot, your effort, your tempo. You can be my wingman anytime.

    Melo's work ethic? The reason he is not in the elite is because he obviously does not put in the time to improve the other facets of his game aside from scoring.

    Watch him on the court. He is one of the worst at moving without the ball and when the ball is not in his hands he might as well be on vacation.

    Also, the cornrow is a dying art. No one wore it better than English defenseman Rio Ferdinand who recently cut it off after the World Cup.
  • 'Melo is the real deal if you take him for what he is. I don't mind not getting the threes, since you can find those elsewhere, and I'm loving his percentages. We have to admire his work ethic, he's obviously dedicated to ramping up his game. My big beef with him is the turnovers - I hate it when a guy averages 4.5 turnovers a game! D Wade is running at 4.6, but Wade gives you twice the assists as 'Melo, who has more turnovers than assists right now. (Wade also is the primary ball handler on the Heat.) You must learn to value the possession, Mr. Anthony, before you truly join the elite.
  • Okay, I disabled one of the spam protector plugins and now I'm able to add comments in IE. The box is still all the way at the bottom though... but that's probably a layout issue.

    Hopefully I won't get innundated with comment spam now... but maybe we'll get some more comments from people using IE who couldn't comment before!

  • Also, Rachel just told me she tried to post a comment in IE and it's not working... and the comment box is all the way at the bottom. It is indeed... that's no good.
  • I think cornrows look pretty dumb on just about everyone. I mean, no offense Patrick... just my opinion.
  • Ben – yeah, you’re right. I was going to make a comment about Denver’s pace, but it didn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the post. From a fantasy perspective, the question is can Denver keep up that insane pace? It helps that they’ve been winning. That usually makes teams try to maintain the status quo.

    And I thought Bronson Arroyo had killed the cornrow, but I’m glad to see that Melo wears it well.

    I respect Melo's clutch. But i cannot endorse him as 'the best fantasy player,' ever, not as long as he drops 3's at the same pace as Brad Miller.
  • @Ben: Your idea is obviously relevant since just about everyone on the Suns is a viable fantasy candidate. 7 seconds or less...

    @Patrick: I was lucky enough to get Carmelo in my KFBA league where he's been the player of the week every week so far leading me to a 3-0 (4-0 if you count the preseason) record there.
  • So much to say. But at the same time, too many lonestars to say it. I'll get back to you tomorrow after I wake up.

    All I can muster right now is that I love the cornrow. More to come I'm sure.

    It also really helps things that Denver is playing at an off the chart pace. Gives him more opportunities for PTS, STL, AST etc. The pace advantage isn't that huge, at least enough to go after all Denver players or something, but it's big enough that it gives Melo a significant edge on his counterparts.

    For example, the Rockets play at 87.4 possessions per game, while Denver is at 100.1. That means that, just theoretically, if Denver were to play at Houston's pace Melo would be averaging 27.2 points instead of 31.1.

    Not ripping on Melo, just something interesting to consider from a fantasy standpoint.

    don't know if you noticed (i just did)...there's an option for chatting on the far right tab on your spreadsheet thing, pretty cool.

    also...i'm playing a guy in my h2h who's gonna triple me in points because of his melo/joe johnson duo. both dudes i thought would be busts...guess not!
