If you haven’t come across it already, Carnival of the NBA #38 is up at Cavalier Attitude. As always, it’s an amazing display of the quality and diversity coming out of the NBA blogging scene today (which I can personally vouch is pretty much like the swingers scene with less fluids). And thanks to Amar for a little GMTR love in the carnival.

If you happen to be in the mood for even more readin’ after that huge carnival, I came across this interesting article at Slate.com by Tommy Craggs entitled, John Wooden: What the legendary coach gets wrong about basketball. Apparently, Craggs doesn’t think too highly about Wooden:

Wooden, and our beatification of the man, has had its toxic effect on the game. It’s certainly there in the NBA, which over the past year or so has hired a chief strategist of President Bush’s re-election campaign to win back Middle America; instituted an absurd and paternalistic dress code (glossed nicely here); and stood idly by while Chicago Bulls coach Scott Skiles benched Ben Wallace, one of the hardest-working players in the game, for wearing a headband.

I think the dress code (instituted by GM John Paxson and not Skiles) is stupid. However, Skiles is absolutely right in enforcing it. You can only coach in the NBA with the respect of the players and the coach can only discipline effectively with one thing: PT.

You’ll notice that the Bulls have gone on a hot streak since this incident took place. Also, Skiles does get Wallace more involved in the offense than he was in Detroit. It may not show up in the numbers, but Big Ben likes the touches and the whole team is on the same page.
