The 9,168 Greatest Fantasy Basketball Seasons

Yes that right, 9,168 players, ranked in order from the best fantasy season to the worst since 1979 (when the full cadre of stats became available). As part of my Top 20 Fantasy Seasons Ever posts (Part 1 and Part 2), I ranked every player from the 1979-1980 to the 2004-2005 season. And since the file was just sitting there on my computer, I thought I’d share it with you. Why? I’m not sure really. But if you ever need to find out who had the 963rd best fantasy year since 1979, know that you have that information at your disposal (by the way, it was Willie Anderson in 1989). Go to the 9,168 Fantasy Basketball Players (1979-2005). Because the file is so large, I had to make it a CSV file. Download it and then open it in Excel.

    This is so cool. Before looking at the list, I would have guessed Olajuwon would be in the top spot. He or David Robinson seemed to be the #1 pick every year. I guess that was partly due to position scarcity.

    Thanks man – I’m glad you found it interesting. It would be cool to run the same list with adjustments for position scarcity (in which case Olajuwon would probably win by a mile). If I remember correctly from the posts, Bird and Jordan are the only two guys to have ever gotten positive scores across all eight roto categories in a season. The thing that really helps Bird in this list is that he starting taking advantage of the three pointer before a lot of the big names of the day. It’s a little reminder that, even only going back 20 years, the NBA game was a lot different then than it is now.

    Of course, as long as we have Gilbert Arenas, we have no need for reminders.
