  • Don Nelson: Stay Away!

Don Nelson is the proverbial Grim Reaper of fantasy basketball teams. He has been looking a bit slimmer lately, as I would of called the Mavericks era Nelson ‘the literal Death Star of fantasy basketball’ (oh! low blow!). Either way, Nelson wrecks havoc with fantasy teams and statistics. Year after year he has proven himself to be the league’s most volatile coach and your worst nightmare. Let me begin this article by saying that Don Nelson has been a coach for thirty years, but for me personally I consider the contemporary Nelson and ignore the Milwaukee Bucks Don Nelson. In my youth i have many misguided views including the coaching career of Nellie. Other things I faux pas include remembering The Terminator only as a good guy, what? Judgement Day was a sequel? I also learnt that Spike Lee and Jack Nicholson were basketball fanss before learning about their film credentials? Also, I had no clue Randy Macho Man Savage was known as a wrestler before he was a rapper? Ok, so I never believed the last one, I only hope someone out there does.

    Be a man Hulk!

The impetus for this article stems from a trade proposal in one of my leagues. I need blocks are rebounds and as such, one of the owners in my league has routinely been offering me Andris Biedrins (spelled w/o looking!) for Manu Ginobili. The trade does work out to provide me with all of the categories I need, so name value aside it is a fair trade. But, I refuse to trade for one of Don Nelson’s players, especially on a team he just got control of.

Nelson’s tenure with the Mavericks provides enough shady evidence to make you think twice about acquiring his players. Remember when Antawn Jamison won 6th man of the year? Was that not great? A high caliber fantasy player wasting away not touching the ball in the first quarter, Great! That was such a frustrating year for both fantasy owners and Jamison himself, that Jamison asked for a trade and was sold for a fraction of his value. I understand the constraints Nellie’s lineup was under in the 2004 season, but seeing such a good fantasy player hampered by his mediocre minutes is a stake through our greedy vampirical fantasy hearts. He did the same with Juwan Howard, Josh Howard and Keith Van Horn (shout out!). Nelson loves to cycle players, we often credit Mark Cuban with the constant revolutions of the Mavericks lineup, but we forget that Nellie was the General Manager of those teams. I highly doubt that Cuban would of overruled Nellie’s objections to the point of paying the millions in luxury tax he has incurred as a result of his constant player shuffling. The only players on Nellie’s roster when he resigned, that were on the team in his first Mav’s playoff run of 2001 were Dirk Nowitzki, the blundering Shawn Bradley and the half out the door Michael Finley. So i consider the count as one player.

    Nellie, The Warriors and You

This turnstile managing has utterly destroyed the fantasy value of many players over the years and Nellie is reshaping the fantasy landscape again this year. We all know the breakouts of Biedrins, Monta Ellis and Matt Barnes, but we fail to recognize how badly all the players on this team are hurting each others values. To translate this and to visualize the reasons why you should not be shopping for Warriors we can goto this series of charts. They outline the mpg of each player of the Warriors. Highlighted in red are all games that have a difference of five minutes from the previous game. This showcases the sporadic minutes all Warriors receive. As a quick review, minutes are everything when it comes to fantasy production, everything.

The odd things are, these minutes do not reflect game planning or blowouts very well. Only two games had a margin of more than 15 points and the mixture of minutes was just as sporadic as a 5 point game. Also, the big men play in some games you would expect them to be in and some you would not, playing Diogu against the Suns? Here are some observations from the numbers…

    - Baron Davis played all 48 minutes of a regulation game? Wait, he did it twice in ten games? What the Hell your f-ing joking, way to protect your glassman Nellie!

    - There are three roster changes in 10 games. O’Bryant gets sent to the D-League, Roberson gets cut because he is hurt (after he plays well in limited minutes) and Kelenna Azubuike is signed and randomly starts two games. Now Azubuike, a Rockets draft camp cut, is playing 30 minutes a game despite the Warriors only having one injury, Richardson, and a roster full of ambiguous players that could fill in at any position but center.

    - Biedrins is the only big man that gets any semblance of consistent minutes, but even his time is as confusing as the movie LuckyNumberSlevin. What the hell was going on for half that movie? Granted I was pretty sloppy drunk on vodka, but all i understood was Lucy Liu is only hotter with age, go figure.

Ok, I understood the movie, but i was sloppy drunk.

Feel free to look at the numbers and make your own observations. I think the moral of this story is that the Warriors are all good fantasy production, but they reek of inconsistency. Because of this, you should avoid trading for them and if you can unload them for a more consistent option… R.I.P. Troy Murphy’s career. From double double to the bench for no reason.

This was an actual game. The premise was to hit ‘Randomize Roster’ until you lose the Conference Finals a few times, then switch teams. Ok, that was a low blow, let the record state that I do like Nellie, just not from a fantasy world.
