The way it works with NBA video games is the same way that works with every sports video game franchise. There are mostly just small improvements to the gameplay, and the graphics step up to what you kind of expect for the current year. This applies to NBA 2K8, but there’s a reason it’s done that way. It works.

If you’ve played NBA 2K8 then you definitely know what you’re getting. There seem to be a few small gameplay tweaks, but you can tell that the AI is a lot better than it was last year. There also seem to be a lot more mo-capped moves than before, which I imagine comes from the maturity in that technology making it cheaper and easier to get that kind of stuff done. It is really cool to see the players actually moving like the players do in real life. Most notable are things like the superstars’ dunks and Ben Gordon’s jump shot. Shawn Marion’s hideous jumper is also in effect (and the Suns are a lot of fun to play with).

NBA 2K8 took the step of adding a dunk contest this season, and while it took me a round and a half of playing all 4 contestants to actually figure out how to make a dunk, it’s a lot easier than when I tried to figure out the NBA Live dunk contest (I think that was in 06 or 07, I forget). I never was able to even make a dunk in NBA Live, but by the end of one full dunk contest in 2K8, I successfully got the ball through the legs and into the hoop. As GSOM (see below) says in their review, it seems like it’ll be a good mini-game to play with your friends who aren’t into the whole icon-passing, play-calling real game experience.

Another awesome mini-game that is not going to get any hype (except by me) is the Three Point Contest. This is exciting not only because it’s a game that people can just sit down and play, but because in high school, two of my friends were playing the NBA Live 97 version…

Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death

They had a bet going that whoever won would have to wear a bra to school… Freind A went 20 for 20 on the first 4 racks while Friend B missed 2 shots. At that point, Friend A thought he was done, stood up, and started taunting Friend B about having to wear a bra, being a girl, etc… Me and several of my other friends were trying – through fits of laughter – to tell Friend A that he hadn’t actually finished. By the time he realized, Friend B had finished all the racks and beaten him by two buckets as time expired. The joy of the Three Point Shootout.

    And finally…

Golden State of Mind also got a free copy of NBA 2K8 from RocketXL, so maybe I’ll have someone to play online with… Unless they’re on a different platform.

Here’s the “official” GameSpot review of NBA 2K8.

And I’ll try once again to recruit more people to play with me… gotta keep pounding away at it. Maybe eventually some Xbox 360 players will see it…

Also, note that I have Bomberman, and will be getting Halo 3 soon. So, if you play those online but don’t have NBA 2K8, then you can still hit me up.
