I’m not sure who was sleeping at the security desk, but somehow I got invited to participate in the “First Annual CBS Sports vs. the World NBA League” fantasy league. Basically, 15 of the top CBS fantasy basketball staff are going head to head against 15 of the top guys in the fantasy basketball industry. Rumor has it that Nels was originally invited to participate in the league, but had to turn it down because he had already maxed out on his fantasy leagues. 1) Give Nels a hand for putting the GMTR Readers League ahead of CBS Sports.com, and 2) let me just say Nels, I’m not below taking your sloppy seconds.

Again, I have no idea how the hell I snuck into this league. It includes Dan Dobish, Tony Mejia, Jamey Eisenberg, Jason Horowitz, and Sergio Gonzalez of CBS Sports.com, Brian Flood and Aaron Gleeman from Rotoworld.com, Mike Yam from Sirius Radio, Rick Kamla of NBA.com fame and, of course, the hardest working guy in the business today – Dennis Velasco, who you may know from Dropping Dimes. And that’s only like 5% of the people playing the league.

So, if you are looking for something to do, you can actually watch the draft LIVE on CBS Sports.com. Although, I use the term “live” lightly, because as you can imagine, getting 29 very important people (and me) to focus on a fantasy basketball draft is going to be difficult. The draft has no time limit, so it means we’ve been getting in a good three picks a day on average. The draft started on Monday, and we’re still working on finishing the second round a week later. Seriously…

I ended up with the 11th pick in the draft, which as I soon found out, was not the greatest place to be. There is a clear drop off in talent right around the 10th or 11th pick this year. I was hoping to get Dwyane Wade as my first round pick, but he went 10th, right before me. So, my first two picks in the draft have been:

1.11 – Chris Paul
2.50 – Josh Howard

Ok. Those intrepid readers who focus on the details may have already realized that less than a week after railing against Chris Paul in the Hornets preview, I go ahead and draft him in the first round. I’m such an ass. I know. And after defending Jason Kidd, I totally passed him up in favor of Paul. Don’t feel bad fro Kidd, he was selected with the next pick (number 12 overall).

Let me try to explain myself. The scoring system that this league uses is strange – 1 point per rebound, block, steal, and point scored; negative 1 point per turnover; and 2 points per assist. So, while I was a Paul hater previously, I was really talking about roto leagues. In this league, Paul scores more points than Kidd and averages just as many assists. So, I talked myself into Paul. He’s still the bigger injury risk, but when you’re drafting youth is the siren call that is impossible to pass up.

Other Stuff Like This:

I took Chris Paul in the Dropping Dimes Experts League draft at 13, and Kidd went right after at 14. So, there you go.

  • Will

Ha! Some guy took Eddy Curry in round 3. By their scoring system, all his rebounds will be negated by his turnovers

I hate to down anything that Patrick or I are involved in, but the CBS “most common” scoring system is f’ed up. That was the one that I put in the mock draft, and then removed after people complained about it.
