Although they didn’t make the rundown, both Dwyane Wade and Andre Iguodala hit game winning shots at the buzzer to lift their respective teams. I’m still trying to decide whose celebration was better. Wade’s was more subdued in a “Yeah, I knew I’d do this” kind of way that was a little reminiscent of Michael Jordan, but Iguodala’s enthusiasm is impressive.
Line of the Night: Yi Jianlian (4.4). One of the best parts of writing this rundown is seeing all the different names that pop up every day. When I first started this thing, I thought we’d be seeing a heavy dose of Lebron, Kobe, and KG. Instead, the variety of names has kept things interesting. Today it’s Yi Jianlian with the line of the night. He was 14 of 17 from the floor, scoring 29 points with 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a block as the Bucks beat the Bobcats 103 to 99. Yi’s minutes and stats have been helped by the fact that Charlie Villanueva is out with an ankle sprain, but an impressive night nonetheless.
Honorable Mentions: In fairness, the LotN could have also gone to Tim Duncan (4.4) who finished with 34 and 18 and was 8 of 9 from the line; this is the season that Chris Paul (4.2) may out Nash Steve Nash. Paul had 19 points, 15 assists and 5 steals in the Hornets rout of Minnesota (110-76).
The Honor Role: Chalk up 6 more blocks for Chris Kaman (4.0); Vince Carter (4.0); Leandro Barbosa (4.0); Jason Richardson (4.0); Chris Bosh (4.0) was 22 of 24 from the line with 42 points. Keep up the good work guys. If you believe you can achieve.
Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Ryan Gomes (3.4) scored 20 points in 38 minutes for Minnesota last night, also adding 9 rebounds and 3 threes. Gomes, who you may remember as the second best player the Celtics gave up in the KG to Boston trade, has been stuck behind Antoine Walker on the Wolves depth chart most of the season. Gomes doesn’t bring the prototypical NBA package like “talent” or “size” but he does put in more effort than the average NBA player. As a result, he’s had pockets of fantasy usefulness in the past and can be a decent source of points and rebounds when he’s getting enough minutes.
Bonzi Wells (3.3). Hell, no, I wouldn’t even consider picking him up off waivers, but credit where credit is due. With Tracy McGrady back in the lineup for Houston last night, Wells had his third good game in a row, scoring 20 points off 8 of 11 shooting in 23 minutes of play. With McGrady back from his injury, the minutes are going to be tough to come by for Wells. 23-25 minutes isn’t going to cut it over the long run for fantasy purposes.
Goat of the Night: Andres Nocioni (1.2). 11 minutes. 4 points. 3 rebounds. Meanwhile, the mummified remains of Joe Smith started at the 4 for Chicago and actually had a decent game, scoring 16 and grabbing 6 rebounds. Not sure where that leaves Nocioni, but Skiles’ moods seem to change with the wind, so Nocioni will likely start Chicago’s next game just because.
Dishonorable Mentions: For some unexplainable reason, Sebastian Telfair (1.2) felt he should take 14 shots in last night’s game. I think we all can see how that turned out; player raters really hated Carlos Boozer’s (1.6) night. He did get a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) but only shot 4 of 16 from the floor. The lesson the machines want to impart on us: missing shots is really, really bad.
