Congrats to the Blazers, whose 13 game winning streak came to an end yesterday. The team was pretty much written off after Oden went down and had surgery, but right now they are a half a game behind Denver for the Northwest Division lead.
Line of the Night: I loved Gerald Wallace (4.8) as a fantasy player until I actually had him on my team last year. Kind of like the Jason Richardson experience, it was mildly disappointing for the simple fact that he didn’t live up to my crazy expectations. But as an outsider, you can’t help but fall in love with his occasional 36 point, 8 rebound, 4 assist and 4 steal games. It’s stupid to think anyone could put up that line with any consistency, but I do with Gerald Wallace for some reason.
Honorable Mentions: Ben Gordon (4.6) scored 39 while shooting 59% from the floor (I think he seems to be enjoying the firing of Scott Skiles more than any other Bull); Dwight Howard (4.6) brought in the new year with 17 and 22 and 5 blocked shots; Jason Richardson (4.4) scored 28 with 8 rebounds and 4 threes; Troy Murphy (4.3) had 17 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 threes; David West (4.1) scored 33 with 11 rebounds; and Chris Kaman (4.0) pulled in yet another double-double with 16 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.
Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Andre Owens (4.3) has been filling in for the injured Jamaal Tinsley at the point for Indiana. Yesterday, he scored 15 off 5-6 shooting from behind the arc. Yeah, all of his points came off the three. Tinsley is going to be out for at least the next week (and based on his history, likely a lot longer) so Owens could be a decent short term add over the next week plus.
Louis Williams (4.0) scored 19 with 4 steals against the Sonics yesterday. 12 of his 19 points came via the free throw, so something funky was going on in that game. We’ve all been waiting for Philadelphia to trade Andre Miller so that Williams could take over the starting job. But the Sixers suck and Maurice Cheeks has already started giving Williams additional playing time (about 25 minutes a game).
Goat of the Night: Bobby Simmons (1.3). It was a good plan. With Desmond Mason out with an injury, Simmons is the only true small forward left on the Bucks. So you have to start him. Unfortunately, the latest Bobby Simmons start led to a 114 to 69 crushing by Detroit with Simmons adding 5 points off 2-7 shooting and 1 rebound in 22 minutes. Oh well. Time to move on. Right?
Dishonorable Mentions: To my freaking GMTR readers’ league roster this week. Wally Szczerbiak (1.9), who I started out of sheer desperation (come back ASAP Kevin Martin), is showing me why that was a bad idea – 3-11 shooting, 1 assist, 0 steals and blocks. Mehmet Okur is also back in my lineup. Thanks for the 1 rebound yesterday. Did you realize that you are 6 feet 11 inches tall and play a position called center? You can leave the missed threes to Wally.
