Line of the Night: Kobe Bryant (5.5) is so excited that the Lakers traded for Pau Gasol, he went out and got line of the night for the second straight day in a row – a rundown first this year. If you were busy having a ménage et trois in a phone booth last night or just come to GMTR for your news (scary): According to Commercial Appeal (just go there and tell me that doesn’t look like a fake website a la the Onion), the Lakers sent Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton Aaron McKie, the draft rights to Marc Gasol (Pau’s brother, whoopee!), two crappy first-round draft picks (2008 and 2010) and cash considerations to the Grizzles for Pau Gasol. No wonder Kobe is happy. The Lakers are a powerhouse team with Gasol, especially when Bynum gets back. Oh, in case you were wondering, Kobe had 46 with 7 boards, 5 assists and 4 threes in a 121 to 101 win against the Raptors. No word on whether he played the entire game with an erection, or just the first half.

Marc Gasol: The apple doesn’t fall far from some very hairy tree
    Marc Gasol

Honorable Mentions: Stephen Jackson (4.6) went for 19/3/7 adding 3 threes and 3 steals; Mehmet Okur (4.5) seems to be back from whatever alternate dimension he was in earlier this year with 27 and 11 and 5 assists yesterday; Jason Kidd (4.5) should trademark his lines – 11 points, 12 assists and 4 steals – that’s a Jason Kidd approved line; I kept this honorable mentions long so we could hear from a couple guys we haven’t heard from in a while – Peja Stojakovic (4.4) finished with 25 off 7-13 from the three and grabbed 9 boards; and Tracy McGrady (4.4) only had 19 points, but also finished with 9 assists, 3 steals, and 3 threes.

Timing is… Everything: Chris Paul had 19 assists yesterday, which would normally earn him at least an honorable mention. But all those assists don’t quite look as good when Kidd has 12, Brandon Roy has 11, Andre Miller has 11, and Deron Williams has 12.

Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Andray Blatche (5.4) had the second best line of the night behind the Back Mamba, going for 19 and 13 with 3 steals and 4 blocks. It’s his third straight start filling in for the injured Caron Butler and he’s showing that he can fill the stat sheet when given the minutes.

In other very tall man news, Jeff Foster (3.9) is starting with Jermaine O’Neal out and he delivered a 13 point, 17 rebound performance in 35 minutes yesterday. The man can rebound, I’ll give him that. And no more.

The Biggest Loser (just cause my shot ain’t fallin, doesn’t mean I’m gonna stop edition): Jamal Crawford (1.9) used the Knicks/Blazers overtime game to go 6 for 27 from the field and 1 of 11 for three. Damn, that’s brutal. I’m amazed he found some non-shooting time to dish out 4 assists. I’m not surprised he didn’t get any rebounds (cause it’s tough to rebound your own miss). Al Thornton (1.8) attempted to one-up Crawford by going 1-15 from the field in his 43 minutes on the court.

A final congratulations to the Lakers for quickly becoming one of the favorites for the NBA Finals. Let’s celebrate!

I’m in a keeper league (2 keepers) and we can trade players from our roster post playoffs for draft picks from other teams if they want to use that player as one of their keepers. I worked hard and my team is now loaded. He is my current roster and some league logistics:

PG- CP3 SG- B. Roy SF- LeBron PF-Gerald Wallace C- D.Howard UTL- Antwan Jamison Bench- Elton Brand, Andrew Bynum and a bunch of scrubs.

16 team- h2h- weighted categories (highest total in category scores the points)- weekly rosters

25 points each- PPG, RPG, APG
15 points each- STL, BLK, TO’s
      10 points each- FG%, FT%, and 3′s
      5 points- tech fouls

Right now we get: PG, SG, SF, PF, C, UTL, & 5 Bench
We are talking about switching to: PG, SG, G, SF, PF, F, C, C, 3 Bench

We may also expand our league size to 20 teams.

So now with all that info out of the way….

What would fair trade value be for these players, Rd 1 is actually rd 3 since we utilize keepers, camby and butler were the 1st two picks this season. I put my estimated worth in ()

      Dwight Howard (1st+)
      Chris Paul (1st+)
      G. Wallace (1st-2nd rd)
      E.Brand (2nd rd)
      B. Roy (2nd-3rd rd)
      A. Jamison (3rd rd)
      A. Bynum (3rd-4th rd)

Grant Hill went for a 5th rd pick, but that team was able to use him for the season. There was also a deal approved that sent Paul Pierce/D. Gooden/1st Round Pick for Mike Miller/Okafor/7th Round Pick.

My last question is about my second keeper. I was planning on keeping CP3, until we threw around the idea to expand our rosters to 2 C’s. Does that make Howard worth more now? I already have Lebron so my FT% and TO’s are already out the door. Does Howard’s flaws become less fatal since i’m almost punting in those cats?

Wow. That’s quite the question. Regarding the fair trade value of your players, I think you’re pretty much spot on, although (for your league) I’d bump up the guys on the low end up by a round or two. In normal leagues, Elton Brand would probably go somewhere in the second round next season, but in your keeper league, he’s a first rounder for sure (especially with 20 teams/1st round = 3rd). I think the same thing applies with Roy, Jamison, and Bynum. There’s no way Bynum makes it past your second round next year, right? I wouldn’t let him drop to the third. And personally, I’d be a little scared about Gerald Wallace’s durability next season, although I think you have him ranked in the right place.

On the Paul/Howard debate, I did some research a while ago on comparing the difference in value between guards, forwards, and centers (using a 2/2/1 roster approach). While it doesn’t exactly match your league’s scoring system, what I found was that a center like Howard deserves a bump of about a round compared to a similarly talented guard or forward. Since Paul is currently the top ranked fantasy guy on our rater and Howard is at 27, the one round bump isn’t quite enough to give him more value than Paul.

But, I think there are three important issues here:

      1. There is still a lot of season to be played. Paul has started to regress a little bit over the past couple of weeks, so by the end of the season he and Howard could have similar values. Wait it out if you can.

      2. If your league does switch to 2 centers, then Howard’s bump becomes bigger because centers will be in more demand. In that case, I think Howard would have more value than Paul.

      3. Since FT% is only worth 10 points in your league, I see no problem with the Lebron/Howard combo and just dumping that category.

So, I guess it depends on what your league does. 1 C = Paul. 2 C = Howard.

Thanks Patrick, I really appreciate the insight. I love your guys’ blog and have become a daily reader. I know you probably get tons of offers, but if you ever want to join another league then you are more than welcome in ours. Chad from HoopsBlogging just started this year and his team is ranked 2 in our weakest division (we have a rankings for our divisions where top teams get promoted and bottom/new teams get demoted.

Thank you very much for the compliment. I also appreciate your commenting here at GMTR. My favorite thing about blogging (besides the need to look at cheerleader photos for “research” sake) is getting to talk with people about fantasy basketball and the NBA. You might be surprised, but my wife’s eyes glaze over when I talk about anything having to do with the NBA (except, surprisingly, Rajon Rondo. She likes him for some reason). But just being able to chat with people about basketball is the great perk of this gig.

And thanks for the league invite. I’ll give you a shoutout before the start of next season and if you’ve got an opening, I may take you up on the offer. Well, as long as I don’t have to play your team anytime during the year. That wouldn’t be fair. Your team is stacked.

I’ll pencil you in if we are going to expand. I wish I could keep my team in tact, but we only get 2 keepers so I doubt I’ll ever be able to assemble a team like that again.

When we add in new teams we have an expansion draft where the new teams get to set there keepers before the regular draft starts.

It’s a neat league that is pretty original, I’ll let you know more when we start gearing up for next year.
