  • Big Ben to Cleveland: LeBron James has a supporting cast?

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, LeBron now has a supporting cast. Yeah! What? Ben Wallace, Joe Smith, Wally Z, and Delonte West suddenly count as a “supporting cast”? I’m sorry, what?

If you’re still reading this instead of picking up Joakim Noah, do that now. Someone in the GMTR Readers’ League actually drafted Joakim. Wow. I was writing him an email to congratulate him until I realized he’d drafted Eddy Curry with the pick right before that one. In an interesting coinkydink, he also has Drew Gooden and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. He is still the Illest Gauskas.

UPDATE: Also, check to see if Boobie (aka Daniel) Gibson is available. Probably want to pick him up too, since there’s no one else to play PG in the land of Cleve. In my haste to post, I didn’t realize that the Boobster had a HIGH ankle sprain. Aka not good. So… follow along below…

    Cavs

Big Z probably needs some rest. Ben Wallace will give him that. I would expect Ilguaskas’ numbers to dip slightly. Wallace’s numbers can’t really get any lower… so good luck with that.

Joe Smith and Drew Gooden are pretty much the exact same player at this point. Seriously. Look at their stats. It’s sort of crazy. So, on the Cavs side, Smith will take over Gooden’s role, and probably have the same value. On the Bulls side, Gooden will fill in for Smith (arguably the Bulls best player at this point), and also keep his value. At least until Deng and Gordon start playing real minutes.

UPDATE: I already told you to pick up Daniel Gibson. What else is there really? With Gibson out, I guess Delonte West will be the PG in Cleveland… and that leaves Wally at SG. Really, this helps LeBron how? And do you really want to pick up Wally Szczerbiak or Delonte West? Maybe and maybier. If you need to pick one, go with Wally, at least he can do something. He’ll get you points and threes from the SF position (which is awesome if you’re rollin with a Mid Ball team). Delonte seems to just squander whatever court time he gets.

    UPDATED:
PG: Delonte West, Daniel Gibson (INJ), Eric Snow, Damon Jones
    SG: Wally Szczerbiak, Devin Brown
    SF: LeBron James
PF: Joe Smith, Anderson Varejao (starter?)
    C: Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Ben Wallace

    Bulls

Pick up Joakim Noah. Did I mention that?

Unfortunately, if Larry Hughes actually plays well, this could mean the end of the Thabo Era. With Deng and Gordon both back, the addition of Larry Hughes means that pretty much every spot from PG to PF has at least 2 players looking for PT. Joakim and Aaron Gray will evidently be holding down the Center spot, but I think they can split the PT pretty well (aka Joakim will get most of it, Gray will get the rest).

    Here’s the Bulls:
PG: Hinirch, Duhon (we’re back to normal here)
SG: Ben Gordon, Thabo Sefolosha, Larry Hughes
SF: Luol Deng, Tyrus Thomas, Andres Nocioni
PF: Drew Gooden, Tyrus Thomas, Andres Nocioni
    C: Joakim Noah, Drew Gooden

    Seattle

They made another deal, so let’s look at the new dept chart…

    PG: Earl Watson, Luke Ridnour
SG: Kevin Durant, Brent Barry, Ira Newble
SF: Jeff Green, Damien Wilkins, Adrian Griffin
PF: Chris Wilcox, Nick Collison (soon), Donyell Marshall
    C: Johan Petro, Francisco Elson

If you have any of the starters or Nick Collison, you’re good to go. If not, um, yeah, why? I don’t see Newble nor Griffin nor Marshall finding themselves all of sudden in Seattle.

In other news, Yahoo has revamped their sports pages again to make them EVEN EASIER to navigate. It’s somewhat ridiculous. No wonder Microsoft wants to buy them. They have actual usability people on their teams.

I just dropped Erick Dampier to pick up Noah. Seemed like a good move.

i supppose i should go ahead and ask

      noah or ty thomas?

in order to get either one, id have to drop diaw, do you see either of those guys upside worth more than diaw? thanks!

    • psj

Gibson has an ankle sprain. If it’s the dreaded “high” variety, he’ll be out for a while.

    • JS

Wait – w/Boobie hurt, won’t Delonte play PG and Wally play SG, Bron-Bron @ SF, Big Ben @ PF and Z @ C – or something like that? I hope so b/c i went and picked up Szczerbiak thinking he was going to start now…why trade for a guy will just ride pine behind LeBron?

    • http://www.givemetherock.com Nels

Terrance, man, that’s some pressure. I’m not thinking that Tyrminator will get more PT than Noah… so, I’d say it’s down to Noah vs. Diaw. That’s though. If Shaq keeps playing, I’m leaning towards Noah. Shaq is a man on a mission now, so the previous Miami style logic no longer applies. I’m tempted to go with Diaw just because you know what Phoenix’s roster looks like and who’s playing where and for how many minutes. The Bulls are much more up in the air. A friend of mine was even suggesting that Drew Gooden could start at Center. I don’t know about that. If Noah ends up with 30 minutes a game, he’ll be putting up double-doubles, and that’s something that I don’t see coming from Diaw unless Shaq takes a break.

    • terrance

i know the kitchen is never to hot for you guys.

i agree, diaw is part of a 7 man rotation in phx. so we know hell get his 25 min a game. i could do worse for my last roster position.

noah has to see more time now! The bulls are going to be a small ball team now. I could see ty thomas, gooden, or noah playing C. diaw will get you that 9-5-5 with 1 stl and .5 blk. i guess ill stick with diaw until shaq proves hes healthy to play 35 a game (which prob wont happen even if he is healthy). the suns got him for playoff time, not the regular season.

finally a trade with a fantasy impact though. I read a blog the other day talking about how all the previous trades didnt have any fantasy effect.

JS: you convinced me to rewrite the Cavs portion of the post. And pick up Wally Z. Impressive commenting.

In the process I noticed that someone had dropped Daniel Gibson for Noah. How’s about that?

    • terrance

the rockets made a solid move getting rid of wells and james. wells, only had a 1 year deal, but james had 2 more years left on his contract after this year and the rockets werent going to use him. the rockets pick up a 3 pt shooter (something, until recently, theyve struggled with) and jacksons contract expires after next season. good move in my book. look for scola to pick up wells 10 15 min/game

    • JS

Thanks Nels but I still question my own theory…Big Ben can’t really play the 4 though, can he? I still stand by the fact that they find a way to start Wally at the 2, or move LeBron to 4 and go small…I also wonder if that whole portion of the deal came about b/c of Boobie’s injury…just not quite sure what they were thinking otherwise…

    • JS

      Oh, I forgot about Joe Smith – there’s the missing link!! Delonte @ 1, Wally @ 2, Bron @ 3, J.Smith and Z/Big Ben sharing duties @ 5…phew..glad I worked that out

    • http://www.givemetherock.com Patrick

Wow, a lot of action in the comments tonight. First, let me say Nels, you are the man when it comes to breaking down trades. You got a post up about this trade before I even heard about it anywhere else.

JS, I think you’re spot on with your last comment. With Joe Smith manning the 4, there is no way that Big Ben sees any time there. He can barely handle the 5 anymore. And I can see Delonte at the 1 (where he played some time at when he was with Boston) and Wally at the 2, well, at least until he sprains an ankle. The Cavs desperately needed a complementary scorer to LeBron not named Larry Hughes, and I can see Wally being that guy. Looking at one of my leagues… Noah and Delonte have already been picked up.

And terrance, I’m so happy to see a trade with some fantasy impact too. Not that I don’t love Shaq and Jason Kidd. But I’m going to buck the trend and here and say that I’m not totally sold on Noah. One, he’s a rookie and I’m generally biased towards them. And two, while let’s a legit double-double guy if he gets enough minutes, he brings absolutely nothing else to the table. He doesn’t block shots, or steal, or get assists or shoot threes, of course. I don’t think his weak double-doubles will bring enough to the table to warrant a pickup.

Oh, and in that league mentioned above, I just picked up Wally for Linas Kleiza.

    • http://comicsunder30seconds.blogspot.com seanlb

should i pick up noah and drop any of these guys?

      brewer
      thabo
      raja bell
      taytay prince
      harris
      shaq
      bynum
      dorrell wright

    • http://www.givemetherock.com Patrick

Even though I’m not a big Noah fan, Brewer is worth dropping for him.

    • http://www.givemetherock.com Nels

I would say maybe Thabo could be dropped for Noah since the Bulls have more competition at the SG position now. Either that or go with Patrick and drop Brewer.

    • http://www.nbaroto.com NBAroto

Great analysis. I think you are right, the Thabo era could be ending. But, remember that Larry Hughes breaks his leg about every 12 games. So, he’s due and that would be Thabo Nation will continue.

Staying on the subject of the Bulls….I’m putting my money (or lack of it) on Tyrus Thomas. I think with Joe Smith gone, we’re going to see him breakout. I was going through his stats this morning — when he gets the time, he performs. So, I picked him up in my league.

As for your recap on the Sonics — the Sonics break my heart. The only guy that really ever delivered for me was Rashard — but he’s down in Orlando now. I own Chris Wilcox but I have a feeling that Carlesimo knows I own him and he is personally screwing with me.

My biggest fear of yesterday’s trade? I own Zydrunas. And he’s my big rebounder. I just wonder how his minutes are going to be affected.

      Love your blog…
