NBA.com has taken the day off from updating their stats, but we can still roll on using our very own GMTR player rater. Onto the best and worst of last night.
Line of the Night: Ben Gordon (6.5). Huh? Is the GMTR rater broken? No, thanks to their recent trade, Chicago ran with 8 last night against the Nuggets and if the final score was any indication (135-121, Bulls win!) defense was optional. In shades of Manu Ginobili, Gordon didn’t start but he came off the bench for 37 points on 12-18 shooting with 6 threes, 5 assists and 2 steals. The bad news is with Larry Hughes coming and Gordon likely not in the Bulls long term plans, this is probably the last we see of Gordon in the LotN.
Honorable Mentions: Damn, there were a lot of good performances last night. In honor of the Academy Awards, here’s the part of the speech where roll off as many names as I can before the orchestra starts to play their get the hell off the stage music. J.R. Smith (5.2), with 43 and 8 threes, on any other night you deserved to win; You’ve always been there Hedo Turkoglu (4.9), with your 31 with 7 threes and 7 assists; Jamal Crawford (4.0), 43 points and 6 threes, you came up just 2 threes short of JR; LeBron James (4.0) 33/15/8, I can’t explain how important you are to the game, Dwight Howard (3.6) had 24 and 18, you’re the best in the business at what you do, and (/soft music starts playing) Marcus Camby (3.5) 19 and 11 with 6 blocks, I couldn’t forget you, (/music gets louder) finally Corey Maggette (3.4) scored 27 while shooting 7-11 from the floor and 11-11 from the line (/MUSIC BLARING) AND I CAN’T FORGET MOM (DNP), THANKS FOR BIRTHING ME!
Waiver Wire Line of the Night: In the spirit of the Bulls playing shorthanded, Tyrus Thomas (4.2) started at the 4 and finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. It’s almost a shame he played so good since Drew Gooden will be arriving shortly to push Thomas back to irrelevance. Now, fresh in our heads, is the memory of how good Thomas can be if given the minutes.
In other news, Francisco Garcia (3.5) – 23 points, 6 threes and 3 blocks – is begging for you to pick him up. Damon Jones (2.4) wants to put his Delonte in your West as he scored 27 points off 7-11 from three.
The Biggest Loser: Peja Stojakovic (-9.5) went 3-10 from the field and could only manage 8 points with 1 rebound and 1 assist. For those of you familiar with the Peja Stojakovic experience (coming to a city near you), you’re not surprised that these kind of games happen occasionally to Peja when his shot isn’t falling.
Dishonorable Mentions: Steve Blake (-11.2) has been a dependable low end PG for most of the season. But last night, he was only 1-10 from the floor, finishing with 2 points, 1 assist, and 0 boards in 28 minutes. Leandro Barbosa (-11.6) only played 1 minute last night after he got a bad cut above his eye (that sucks for those of you in leagues that count max games). And. I can’t. Stop. Myself… Eddy Curry (-13) achieved the lowest score of the night (right below Ronnie Price (-12.1)) off his 4 point, 0 rebound, 0 assist, 2 turnover game.
