Ok, I admit it. I’m an idiot. I turned off game 4 at the middle of the 3rd quarter with the Lakers up by 20. I’m an east coast guy. It was already 11 and I had to work the next day. Why should I waste good sleeping time screaming at Doc Rivers and watching the Lakers blow out the Celtics? But, before I turned off the TV, I stood there for a second with my hand on the DVR button. Should I record the end of this game just in case? Nah. The Celtics had looked horrible up to that point in the game, there was no chance in hell that they were going to win.

Oh, wait. Did I just miss “the greatest comeback in the history of the finals?” Did the Celtics really hand the Lakers their first home loss in the playoffs after being down by 24 points?

My main problem was the fact that I sat through the entire miserable first half and I didn’t feel like sitting through a second. Here’s the gist of what was going through my head during those first 24 minutes:

Oh no, the C’s are coming out a little lazy, that’s not good. The Lakers aren’t missing any shots. The Celtics look sloppy. Too many turnovers. This is going to get ugly. Lakers opening a big lead. Doc, call a timeout. Doc, timeout. Timeout Doc. Timeout. Let’s call a timeout. Timeout. Timeout. Timeout. Dammit Doc, a timeout. Why is Eddie House shooting so much? Pass the ball Eddie. STOP JACKING UP SHOTS! Where the hell is that timeout? If Sam Cassell turns the ball over one more time, I’m going to reach through the TV and punch him in the face. You know what would be awesome right about now: a timeout. Doc, why don’t you calm everyone down with a timeout? Be a buddy and call a timeout. F**KING TIMEOUT! Why are 5 guys guarding Kobe and leaving the rest of the team wide open at the three point line? Trevor Ariza for three? Down by 24. We so need a timeout. Please, Doc. FOR THE SAKE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, CALL A DAMN TIMEOUT.

/ Kobe misses a three
/ Garnet hits a jumper
/ Radmanovic misses a three
/ Allen hits a three
/ Phil Jackson calls a timeout

Arrrrggghhh!

Other Stuff Like This:

  • You should have done what I did and had a beer and Battlestar Galactica at the half, and then a Coke Zero in the third. The first half of the BSG miniseries made the game not seem quite as bad. I learned my lesson game 2 when I fell asleep during the Lakers comeback. From now on, when I start something, I'm sticking with it. And that includes Battlestar Galactica. And writing a novel.

    Beers
    Beat
    Battlestar Galactica
    (I love you Jim!)
  • I don't blame you. These games start late! Ironically, its a lot more likely the east coast Celtics fans turned the game off while the west coast Lakers fans kept on watching to the bitter end.
  • Duuude, that means you missed the end-of-the game press conference when Kobe said he was gonna get DRUNK! http://thesportsculture.com/2008/06/13/kobe-bry...
  • @Nels - Ah, I see. My problem was that I watched Battlestar Galactica and had a coke zero BEFORE the game, not during the half. Seriously, I did. You freaked me out a little with that comment.

@TheSportsCulture - nice Kobe photoshop there, although I was hoping to see a 40 of Olde English in his hands.
  • Patrick, we're like brothers from different mothers. I mentioned BSG in a comment on FreeDarko and I think people just politely ignored it. GMTR is my home.
