Better Living Through Science: A Fantasy Hoops Guide to Help You Dominate Leagues

If you’re a big fan of the GMTR player rater or of ranking players in general, listen up.

I love our player rater, but I’d be the first to admit that my technical skills are not quite up to the level of my bow hunting skills. So, while the math I used to generate the rankings is the best that is and ever was, the usability of the stuff consists of me throwing something up on Google and letting people run wild with it.

And while fun – and Chad – is the name of the game in fantasy basketball, if you’re looking to take in the next in utterly dominating every league you play in, well, the guys over at Fantasy Hoops Strategy have created an awesome fantasy ranking tool to do that. Here’s what they have to say on their site.

We were just like you – tired of showing up for the fantasy draft with the same magazines and print-outs as the rest of the managers, and making the same mistakes as the rest. After all, how does that publication understand YOUR scoring and YOUR league?

We worked out the hard calculations so you don’t have to.

Other sites offer cheat sheets. But that’s short-term fix and not a long-term solution. Instead, we offer a framework. We offer a set of principles, guidelines, and (dare we say) formulas, that can help us win our league, regardless of the rules number or players

This framework is provided via an excel based app that is fully customizable for your league. You can change the number of teams in the league, the players per team, the scoring system (points vs. categories), the types of stat categories to include and the number of starters per team at each position. The output not only ranks players overall, but it also ranks players by each position, making it the ultimate draft cheat sheet.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, the stats are updated automatically and you can change the year of stats you want to rate. This means that your cryogenically frozen body will be using this program when Shawn Kemp VI is dominating the Federated Martian Basketball League in 2108. Good stuff, I know.

The program currently sells for $20 and having taken a look at it, I’d honesty say it’s worth every penny. That being said – I still wanted a better deal for you guys. Because GMTR readers rock the Kasbah on a regular basis, we have negotiated a special deal for you. Between now and September 5th, GMTR readers can buy the program for $10. That’s like… … … half off!

If you are interested, you can visit their site or click on the button at the bottom of this post and type the phrase: “GMTRDEAL” into the discount code spot at checkout to get half off the purchase. The code is good until September 5th. And if you buy the program, I’m sure if for some reason it doesn’t work for you or you are not satisfied with it, the guys at Fantasy Basketball Strategy will refund your money.

If you’re still unsure or need more information before dropping today’s lunch money on this project, you can find out more information on the Fantasy Basketball Strategy FAQ or by checking out this youtube video.

If you don’t have the scratch to spare, don’t worry, the GMTR rater will be around again this year in its full Google spreadsheet glory. But if you do have some extra cash burning a hole in your pocket, I think you’re really going to like this program.

Please note a couple things:

1) You’ll need at least a basic understanding of excel as well as the actual program to use this spreadsheet (I’m not sure if it’s compatible with the open office stuff). But, if you’ve found your way to this dark crevasse of the internets, you can probably handle a little pointing and clicking in excel.

2) Between this and the GMTR fantasy magazine coming out in September, you might be frightened that Nels and I are trying to make GMTR into a money making operation. However, rest assured that this is not the case. GMTR makes almost nothing and we plan on keeping it that way! Plus, I get nothing if you purchase the Fantasy Hoops Ranking Spreadsheet. Yep, not one cent. I’m simply directing you to this program because I think it’s that damn good and I’ll think you’ll like it.

To buy the program, click on the buy now button and don’t forget to use the special super secret code: GMTRDEAL

Hmm...What makes this any better than using basketballmonster.com? Well I guess the GUI interface is nice, but what makes it ten bucks better?

I am not being a hater, I appreciate the heads up. I like your player rater a lot and its awesome that it is free. You can view last season's rankings based on your league's settings for free on basketballmonster. Before I slap down ten bucks I want to know if I would get anything I didn't already have.
  • ...well, do you have computer hacking skills? Numbchuck skills?
  • bucko, with the fantasy hoops guide spreadsheet, you can edit the stats retrieved from {wherever on the internet} and thus create custom projections for the coming season. I believe you'll be able to do the same thing on basketballmonster soon, but it will cost $14.95 and isn't available yet. I'm not trying to down basketballmonster or anything, because it is a much more awesome site than this one, but just saying that depending on how you do the math you could save $5.

As for me, honestly, I'm the "take it for free or not at all" type as well. I have about 10 books on my shelf right now waiting to be read and I paid for none of them (okay, I paid ~$2 to send other books to other people, but my new books from other people are in much better condition than the old books I sent to other people). That's part of the reason I run this site and never ask for any money. There's ads, yes, but if you don't want to click on them, you certainly don't have to. Of course, if you want to, I won't object. ;)
  • Another note: I wish I could have had a trial version of the fantasy hoops guide spreadsheet before I painstakingly did my rankings on the Big Board as well as the player reviews in the upcoming GMTR Draft Guide.
  • Hey bucko – that’s a valid question. And I’ll be perfectly honest with you, a lot of the same customizable features on this spreadsheet are also found on basketballmonster.com. In fact, there are probably some other cool features that only BM has, like customizable positions based on Yahoo/ESPN/etc leagues. I actually didn’t know anybody was doing that yet.

What is different about the spreadsheet is the way the output is organized and the way the ratings are calculated. Kind of looks like a cheat sheet would, with rankings by different positions and overall. I could see bringing something like that to a draft would be more user friendly than the giant list of players that BM spits out. And players are ranked within position, so you can easily tell how much better Chris Paul was than the next best point guard and so on. Of course, you can take the time to run and organize the BM output like that if you wanted to, but time is money, right?

That being said, if you currently use basketballmonster and are happy with what it provides, then I’d probably tell you to stick with it. It’s tough to beat free.
  • yeah, and what Nels said. Creating your own projections is a cool perk.

Which leads me to the general observation. If you're looking for the quick and dirty stats, player ranks and trends, then its difficult to impossible to beat basketballmonster. It's the best at what it does.

If you're a stats geek who likes playing around with numbers and seeing what happens, then this spreadsheet is something you might be interested in.

I can understand why most people fall into the first category, but the geek in me can't help but be attracted to the second. Not that statistics arouses me.

To be honest I'll try just about anything once if I think it might give me a edge in my league - especially if it's ten bux rather than twenty.

Having said that after quick read of their website it sounds like what they can offer me is pretty close to what I have already come up with in Excel using the mean and standard deviations for each cat. (Actually rather than the %'s categories my league uses I choose to go with the EFF%'s that I was put onto by the good people of GMTR)

Now I'm sure what they have is probably much more polished and visually appealing that my spreadsheet but becuase I only play in 1 (hyper competitive) league the ability to customise for different league settings means very little to me.

So if anyone goes ahead and buys the guide in the next few days I'd love to hear some more about what it can / cannot do.

i watched the other you tube video and it looks like theres only two scoring options. roto and points, no h2h. i paid for BM last season and thought it was worth the money. But if you have a customized league with different scoring, it may be worth looking into. I like how they hvae a point system for different positons and who is better to grab depending on the # of teams in the league and the scoring.

As far as projections go I do my own, I like to see what others think though. I use Basketballmonster and GMTR and there ratings of how the players did in the previous year. I use that along with the players development, team and coaches situations to project. Just like everyone else, I hit on some and miss on some. Basketballmonster has a really good mathematical equation, but I wouldn't recommend their projections at all. Last year, I shared a login with someone I knew who paid for Basketballmonster just to check out their projections. I don't remember them all, but they were bold, which is only good if it comes true. If I remember correctly I think they had LaMarus Aldridge projected around 16 going into last season, which is why he got pimped all over the internet.

Based on what I read, it seems like fantasy addicts like us have our own way of coming up with similar data for free already anyway.

But still, would like to give props to Patrick and Nels for actually thinking about their readers and then taking the effort to come up with this discount. That's much appreciated boys.
  • bucko
Just wanted to agree with dyeyk and thank you guys for the thinking of us, whether we take advantage of the deal or not.

Well I took the plunge at first I thought it was no better than Basketball Monster however I found out that its fairly simple for newbie excel users to even put his own mix own the rankings.

It's a fairly user friendly program and I really thought there would be more to the program, though for 10 bucks I am now happy I took the plunge however I was a bit unsatisfied with it in the beginning.

If your a Novice at Excel and want to get the rankings projected from your own player AVG's this may just be the program for you as well.
