As Nels has mentioned, Manu Ginobili announced on Friday that he is going to have arthroscopic surgery to fix a posterior impingement of his left ankle. Ginobili injured the ankle last season, but decided to play on Argentina’s national team in the Olympics anyway. The result worked out pretty well for Argentina, but not so well so Ginobili’s ankle.
Partly because there is new information out regarding a timetable and partly because I’m an idiot and forgot that Nels had already written something, here’s my take on the Manu situation.
Word on the street is that Ginobili will take 6-to-8 weeks to recovery from surgery, although the Spurs have yet to announce an official timetable. But if you are to believe some random dude on a Spurs forum (and I don’t know why you wouldn’t), this type of injury is common in ballet dancers (insert flopping joke here) and typically takes 6 months for a full recovery. Many players don’t wait for a full recovery before getting back on the court, so I wouldn’t necessarily expect Manu to miss the entire season. Rotoworld is currently predicting 2-3 months using some unexplained rational.
Regardless of how much sway you give to random dude, the further you dig into the situation, the more the current 6-to-8 week recovery timeframe seems on the very optimistic side of things. It’s probably no surprise that in an awfully strange coincidence, 6-8 weeks puts him back on the court just in time for the start of the season.
Hopefully, you can wait for more information regarding Manu before your draft, but knowing the little we know now, I’d stay away from Ginobili in most drafts, unless he falls multiple rounds from where he should go. The risk associated with Manu’s ankle override’s his sixth man awesomeness.
If Ginobili does miss a significant portion of the season, what does that mean to the rest of the Spurs? I guess you have to upgrade Michael Finley, simply because he’s going to have to log more minutes in his “starting†role. Last season he averaged 10/3/1 in about 27 minutes a game, good for 200th on the player rater. So, I guess don’t upgrade him too much. It could also mean more minutes for… uh… Bruce Bowen? Ime Udoka? Robert Horry? Can Roger Mason play the 2? Man, the Spurs are so screwed.
