First off, thanks to Nate Jones of Jones On The NBA for putting this together.
Now, I imagine that most of these NBA Stadium Day posts are going to be nostalgic and/or historic in nature and/or scope. My NBA Stadium Day moment? Not so much.
In fact, the player who made my moment possible is going to be playing in Russia this season. I’m sure we’ve all had moments like mine, but since I only go to about 2-3 games per year, and this was one of the earlier ones I attended (in my “adult” life), it stands out.
I think most teams, at this point, have a promotion where they give away something if the home team gets 100+ points in the game. In the Bulls case, it’s usually Big Macs. I recall that a few years back in Portland it was Chalupas (which was awesome because the radio announcers would say ‘Chalupa’ in a Glen Quagmire-like voice).
Anyway, my favorite stadium moment came in a game vs. the Bobcats which had pretty much already been decided (even though the biggest lead was only about 13-15 points). But when Jannero Pargo drove the lane, got to the hoop, and laid the ball in, the crowd exploded like he’d just hit the winning shot of game 7 in a playoff series. Why? (You’ve probably already guessed) We were getting free Big Macs, beyotch!
There are many things that can be learned from this story (most of them concerning humans and free stuff), but the most important lesson to draw is that, given the right circumstances, any player can make the crowd feel like they were at the best game ever. Even if it only lasts as long as it takes to scarf a Big Mac.
