The GMTR Readers Fantasy Basketball Mock Draft started yesterday. If you applied and didn’t get an email about it, I apologize. We had a bunch of people apply, and Patrick even let one extra person take his spot. Much like the GMTR Readers League last season, there are fierce competitors who read this blog.

You can view the results of the Mock Draft in near real time (I think Google updates the public version every 5 minutes). I’m not sure how much fun that is, but it seems like there’s always a participant or two on there looking at it. I am also cross-posting the results to the Mock Draft Roundup. Cause it would be kind of pointless if I didn’t.

      Weird draft so far. Deron@14, Boozer@12, Nowitzky@8…

I agree that it is had been odd so far, but what is so weird about Nowitski at 8? Especially in a H2H.

I desperately want to be in the GMTR Readers league!
      How is this possible?

      Daniel,

Nels and I are still thinking about the best way to select people for the readers league this year. We’ll be making an announcement about it on the site soon.

For me at least, Id say gilbert arenas is undraftable in the first two rounds right now. I know hes only going to miss the first month of the season, but the first four rounds are when you get the players you are going to build your team around. And if one of your first two picks go down, it changes the dynamic of your entire team.

I can do broken legs, broken hands, high ankle sprains etc…but when you start talking about knee injuries, lower back pain, and tendinitis of anything, thats what worries me.

Caron butler broke his wrist a few years back and I had no trouble drafting him last season in the readers league because it was just a break (six weeks and your back). But arenas’ knee, bynums knee, anyone with microfracture have to prove it to me before i take the gamble. Of course, that means i lose out on amare in his first season back from surgery, but so be it. I want my first couple of guys to be my teams rock.

@ ayaz : Like I said in my comments on the draft board, I admit Deron’s a reach at early second. I chose AI for his explosiveness and the “Contract Year” effect – yo Patrick! can you mathematically quantify that?

I then wanted a 20-10 caliber guy for the second round. Since Alpha-T grabbed two 20-10 big men, I opted to flow like water and not fight the big man rush and solidify my PG position with a 20-10 guard. I was expecting that I wouldn’t get another crack at a top tier PG come 3rd round. As I predicted, true enough a “PG-run” followed my Deron pick. I’m glad I got him, how many PG’s dish 10 APG while lobbing it up at 50FG%?

Stay tuned. I will hopefully work out a method to my madness.

For the record, I drafted Agent Zero BEFORE this info came out… and only like an hour or so before it was announced… SONOFA!!!

    • http://pointsinthepaint.wordpress.com/ Points in the Paint

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt on that Dennis. Aren’t you glad this is a mock draft and not a real one?

    • ayaz

PITP: thing is, so far you managed to get an advantage in assists (but not a sure lock by any means) and nothing more, due to bad FG percent by AI and mediocre FT (for a guard) percents by the two of them.
Steals are OK, turnovers are very high, threes are no good…
The first couple of rounds is all about anchors to me, and this is not what you achieved.
Looking forward to seeing what sort of team you end up with.

Call me Crazy, But I think that Pau And Paul Pierce worth a 1st 3 rounds pick.

Sorry about the change of topic here guys? but… Where do you guys think is the best free online site to run a NBA fantasy competition? I used nba.com last year but hear from the streets that yahoo is better? Anyone with help would be much appreciated.

    • dyeyk2000

yahoo is the gold standard which all the other leagues are compared against. it’s the first thing that comes to mind when you say “fantasy sports” but it doesn’t mean it’s the best format out there, but it probably is the most recognized.

Michael, I was in two leagues in each of Yahoo and NBA.com, and Yahoo was definitely the better of the two. They make it so much easier to do just about everything (which was especially nice when managing more than one team).

I’ve also played at CBSSportsline before, and I’d rate that as better than NBA.com but not as good as Yahoo. I played on AOL once a while ago when they first launched their fantasy basketball platform and it was not ready to be launched. Not sure how they’re doing now, though, since it’s been a few years…

    • terrance

yahoo is my favorite. The only thing Id like to see improve is the message board. CBS sportsline has the best message board. They have so many options on the leagues homepage. You can do so much more other than just post messages. If you have an active league with a few shit talkers, its nice to have a good league homepage

I used nba.com last year for my main leagues, and dabbled in yahoo after being exclusively yahoo. I liked nba.com well enough – the part I liked about it was the ability to make multi-team (> 2 team) trades, and also has the option to trade draft picks. I don’t think you can go wrong either way, but definitely get familiar with the site before and after your leagues are set up.

    • bucko

I like CBS the best because of league customization. You can control and setup whatever type of waivers/free agency system you can think of. My main league has everyone on waiver from Monday morning to Friday morning and after waivers are run on friday morning everyone goes on a free agency for the weekend. Its a long process to explain why we do this, but my point is only CBS fit our needs.

I’m doing a draft analysis of the mock draft over at my blog. Please check it out. http://pointsinthepaint.wordpress.com/

@bucko, I did a league on CBS once and was also impressed with the ability to customize that they offer. If I wanted a highly customized league (as you have) that is a very good place to go.
