Since it’s been pointed out in the comments already (although, I first got the notice the morning from my Google Alert), Yahoo is now open for fantasy basketball business. And as such, now would be a great time to announce the GMTR Reader’s League 2008.

Here’s how this will work: if you want to be in the Readers’ League, please either leave a comment or email with your suggestion as to what sort of contest we should have to pick the people to be in the league. That’s right, the best we could come up with was a contest where you tell us what the contest should have been. Maybe we’ll use your idea next year. :) For the actual decision-making part, the most innovative and/or humorous ideas will move to the head of the class. People were way too serious about the last contest, so try to spice it up as much as possible this time.

As a side note, Patrick has offered himself up to be in 2 leagues if there is enough interest, so don’t worry, you probably have pretty good odds of getting in to one or the other, and since Patrick will be in both of them you’ll have a chance to beat him either way.

As you know, last year’s Readers’ League was pretty much the most competitive from end-to-end that both Patrick and I have ever participated in (of course, we don’t usually leagues with money at stake, so maybe that explains that). Anyway, Patrick suggested that, if there were sufficient interest, we take the cutthroatedness to a whole new level, and have a really, really big league. Like, 20+ teams big. Yahoo will let you have up to 30, so don’t think we’re kidding around here. If you’d be interested in the Ginormous Massive Tremendous Redonkulous Reader’s League, please add that to your comment or email. It would still likely be 9-category H2H, if that makes a difference to anyone.

Finally, just to be clear, you can be in both a normal Readers’ League and the BIGOL Reader’s League, so don’t let your desire to just play some standard fantasy basketball get in the way of also trying something new and different (and probably legally insane).

Most of us do this for fun and the intense competition. Sadly, while fantasy basketball is the third most popular fantasy sport, most of the readers here and the blogs assosiated with GMTR consider it the best bar none. When I hear about how popular fantasy football is, I laugh. Its not even better than baseball to me. All football does is hold together my group of 13 other managers until registration time for basketball is here. Im just glad to be in leagues and comment in blogs where others commentors love the game of basketball as much as me.

What Id like to know is how far will we go to make sure we make the draft, or make time to search through match.com err…I mean the FA pool. Since Fantasy basketball is so important to us, what are some of the biggest events, social gatherings, childrens birth, coitus with a loved one, your own wedding, that youve put off to make sure you were at a draft, or at home on a sunday night to see if your team got the 71 pts, 13 rebs, 23 ast, 3 stls, 4 blks to come from behind in a given week. Have you ever stayed up to 4am est when yahoo’s “new day” starts and a player would turn from waiver to FA to grab a guy who you didnt want to use your #4 waiver on, but knew he would be gone by 8am that morning if he was an FA. <—-(damn, im pretty sure thats a run-on sentence) So my contest would be to write a story on the above.

Ive been told by a few girlfrieds that Im OCD about fantasy basketball. To be honest, I thought there may be some validity to that until I ran into the readers at GMTR and theres so many more. I notice that there is a small family of bloggers and readers that feel the same way I do about basketball, and fantasy basketball. I was doing a mock draft yesterday at a friends house and he looked over and saw the google spreadsheet up and said “its too early for that”. I laughed and thought, maybe it is, but theres 12 other guys who like mock drafts as much as me. I use to enjoy reading mock drafts, but to participate and give my own individual breakdown is great! Ive always thought that I could write abetter breakdown of playres than some of the crappy fantasy magazines out there. Im going to make a post about something silly i saw in one of them yesterday.

doney, asia carrera has a posse huh? I like it!

Anyways, I read this fantasy magazine yesterday. 8 cat, non-keeper, roto. So the league settings were a little different. This has to be one of the worst fantasy magazines. I cant remember the name but KG was 14, and that wasnt a big deal. A little lower than Id put him, but nothing too bad. Then I got to the 4th roudn of their mock draft. Beasley was a mid fourth round pick, against, not too surprising as Ive seen rookies taken early before. Not by pros, and if you have a magazine publication, id say you at lease think youre a pro. So beasley and then the next 3 players drafted were, boozer, gasol, and bosh! In that order! I put the magazine down and told my buddy it was a waste. He said he only reads it for the info, not the rankings. Maybe, but it reminds me of getting caught with penthouse and telling my dad I couldnt wait to see what bob guccione had to write about this week.

A super-deep league might be fun.

    • dyeyk2000

i’m up for the reader’s league AND the big ass league.

for the contest. well since we want humor, and i personally want to keep it simple coz i’m sure reading a bunch essays would be pretty boring, why not do a “caption this” contest?

contestants dig up any NBA related photo (concerning NBA personnel i guess :P ), hopefully not too far back, maybe 2 years back perhaps? and they caption it. funniest shit wins. and we even get to post the funniest ones in this here blog. instant entertainment. perfect. <3

    • dyeyk2000

      PS

even if your caption sucks. if you find a really funny ass photo. that should also count for something right? like i said. instant entertainment. <3

    • Doneycat

I’ve got to run down to Borders to see the new fantasy magazines. Gasol ahead of Bosh?!? That’s crazy!

BTW, I’d be up for any sized league – 12, 30, 2. Whatever the people want.

    • terrance

yeah, a deep league would be a test. Getting Chris Paul with my first pick and Tyson Chandler with my second pick, sweet!

So, we lost our spam filter plugins (along with the whole site) last night, and apparently that jacked up the database to the point where it erased several recent comments. I could try to recreate those comments from my Google Reader archive, or I could just post the list of people signed up so far.

A 30 team league where Shaun Livingston might be a player to watch? Count me in for either league.

    • http://www.givemetherock.com Nels

@amit, not sure what b.d.w means, but yeah, it’ll be a live draft. When we’ve sorted out who’s in what league(s), I’ll email to try to figure out the best possible time for the majority of people.

A 20+ team. Excellent… a new place where I can release my robotic Richard Simmons (er- Darius Miles) and take over the fantasy world.

    • Daniel R

There it goes, interested in either Readers or BIGOL Readers leagues.

      Thanks.

    • http://www.givemetherock.com Nels

Thanks Daniel. Invitation will be coming soon.

    • seanlb

damnit. my contest was wicked awesome.

    • Bonafide

Hey guys… I’d like to sign up for the league again this year. :) Hope there’s still room.

    • Bonafide

Prefer NOT to be in regular non-insane big 20 team league. :)

    • Wilson

hi nel, when is the invitation comin?

    • http://www.givemetherock.com Nels

Wilson, I had you down as a ? for the Monster League, so I didn’t send you an invite to that initially. I have now, but it’s already up to 16 people, so if that’s too big for you then, you don’t have to join. We didn’t get quite enough people for two 12-team leagues, though.
