Truth in Advertising and the Monster League

Saw this ad on some other blog the other day:

Um, really? Does that actually make anyone want to play fantasy sports at Bet Arcade? I mean, sure, they’ve got my attention. Then they deliver a message this is pretty much the exact opposite of what I anticipated. Sometimes that surprise element can be effective. In this case, however, I doubt it.

I made my own awesome ad, too, though, just to emphasize the point:

Really, though, this experiment in advertising is really just filler for the announcement that there are still 3 spots left in the Gigantic Monstrous Tremendous Ridiculous League. That will get us to the max number of teams that Yahoo allows (which is, unfortunately, only 20).

I’ve resent invites to 5 people who got invited but didn’t sign up, so who knows if they’re really as interested as they might have been before. So, if you leave a comment on this post, you’ve got a chance to get in on the madcap action that is only so certainly going to occur in this 20 team league. As a PS, I’ve balanced the roster sizes according to the recommendations of several fantasy basketball experts, so it won’t be like you’ll end up drafting Spence Hawes. But someone might draft Shaq.

Okay everybody! The Monster league has been filled! 20 teams! It’s going to be AWEsome!

I never got an invite to join the league. Maybe i put in my email incorrectly? I hope there’s still a spot for me.

you sent me the invitation again but i did sign up after the first one so its all good.. my team name is “why so serious?” isnt it the best name ever? :) )

anyway, i think its wrong to limit the roster spots on each team to 8-9 like you did. 13 is much better.. yeah guys will have to dig deep and draft dorell wright.. but this is were you seperate the good from the great IMO. i think its more fun. this why we are playing 20 teams right? think about it :)

@Will, my bad. You said in your original comment you weren’t really interested in the Monster league, so I only put you on the list for the 12 team leagues, but one 12-teamer was already full, and Patrick (who was going to run the other one) got himself into 6 other leagues (and will soon be murdered by his wife). So we thought we’d get everyone else into the Monster league, but, as stated, I didn’t have your name on the list. If it makes you feel any better, there were at least 4 other people who didn’t get in either.

@Amit, I appreciate your suggestion, but I’ve talked to other fantasy bloggers who have played in large leagues before, and used their experience and input to decide on the appropriate settings.

There are actually 10 roster spots in the league, so there will be 200 players drafted. The problem with having 260 players drafted would be that – unless all you had 11 or 12 of the 13 counting towards your stats – there’s nobody worth picking up in the free agent pool. Eight of the 10 roster spots in the league are starting spots, so there’s 2 bench spots to put injured players that you don’t want to drop, but that makes it so people can’t just pick up players that they’re not actually going to play.

you can also send me invites if there still room :) or maybe if you’ll create another league :D
