Line of the Night: Nothing better than an overtime to boost a player’s stats for one day. Anthony Parker (1.25) was an overtime beneficiary as he got 40+ minutes in the Warriors/Raptors OT game and made good with 23 points off 7-10 shooting, chipping in 5 boards, 4 steals, and 3 threes.*
This Honorable Mentions List Goes to 11: There were a lot of solid fantasy performance to go around yesterday considering there were only 7 games. To our untrained eyes, Al Harrington (1.06) looks like he had a line worthy of LotN – 26/11/3 with 6 threes and a steal – but don’t doubt for a second that the computer knows all.
Al Thornton (0.98) is taking advantage of a Camby-less Clipper team (damn you Marcus Camby) to put up some gaudy numbers. His latest included 30 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals in an overtime aided game against the Nuggets. Everyone knows that Brandon Roy (0.92) is a multi-category beast (he put up 15/5/7 with 3 steals), but on to the really important question: how does he look in a bike helmet? Jose Calderon (0.89) had 13 assists, Chris Kaman (0.84) had 15 rebounds and 4 blocks, Shawn Marion (0.83) had 4 steals and 3 blocks. I’m beginning to regret not reaching for Nene Hilario (0.79) in drafts. A nice 22 and 11 from him yesterday. I shouldn’t wish injury upon him. That wouldn’t be right.
Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Big Willie Green (0.66) had (a non-overtime) 28 minutes off the bench for the Sixers, going 8-10 with 2 threes, 2 steals, and 18 points. Similarly, Andrea Bargnani (0.61) went 8-10 from the floor on his way to 19 points.
Now is a good time to reintroduce Patrick’s tip for avoiding stupid waiver wire pickups. It is, simply, if a guy shoots over 70% on his way to a good game, don’t pick him up off waivers. I don’t care how good the rest of his stat line looks, don’t pick him up unless you really think he’s going to shoot 80% for the rest of the season. Trust me, it will save you a lot of wasted adds/drops.
Guys who might want to pick up include Travis Outlaw (0.51) in smaller leagues. Despite going 2-9 from the floor, he chipped in 3 steals, a block and a three while getting a decent 31 minutes on the court. And ha! You all thought I was crazy put Anthony Carter (0.46) so high up on the PG tiers. Yeah, he’s old, but he’s starting for the Nuggets. Yesterday, he put up a 12/4/6 in 38 minutes.
Biggest Loser: Kevin Martin (-0.52). Here’s a reenactment of a conversation I had during the CBS 30-man draft:
Me: Hmmm, I need a nice, safe second round pick. Someone I can trust.
Me: How about Kevin Martin
Me: Brilliant!
Me: Thought so. It’s not like he’s ever going to go 2-9 from the floor, scoring 9 points with 5 turnovers.
Me: You are a smart as you are sexy.
Me: That’s what my mom tells me.
* For those of you new to the GMTR daily rundowns, you will find that player raters (for the daily post we are currently using Basketball Monster) have a thing for players who get percentages and steals.
