You will definitely find somebody willing to give you a player better than you could get in FA for his name/potential. Offering a 2-for-1 (or 2-for-2, adding the worst player on the other team to finish the deal and then immediately dropping them) lets you add by subtracting- increase your FG% by losing a "decent" player and bolster it with a good FA/trade pickup. Anyway, I really like Thompson and Gasol for your purposes in this case. And I also believe that Oden will be okay, but he'll also foul an awful lot and not be on the court. I say work a deal.
