Line of the Night: Marcus Camby (1.40). Apparently, less Chris Kaman was the prescription Camby needed to get his fantasy game into 2nd gear. It was certainly not a LotN performance that we’ll be remembering at the end of the season – 15/10/6, 87% from the floor with 3 steals and 3 blocks – just vintage Camby and a reminder why the guy would be a first round talent if not for the injuries and all the hurt those injuries caused us. Roto Evil advises Camby owners to sell high on him. My question is: who’s buying?
Honorable Mentions: Yao Ming (1.24) had 33 points, 14 boards and 5 assists. He was also 17-19 from the line. This was against (guess?)… the Warriors! Paul Millsap (1.06), who had 17, 11, and 7, has been doing his best Carlos Boozer interpretation while the big man is out. Why isn’t he starting somewhere? Jameer Nelson (0.95) is back for the Magic and looked good in his return: 15 points, 7 assists, 4 steals and 3 threes; and Dwight Howard (0.61), with 21 and 23 and 6 blocks, was only the 19th best score of the night because Basketball Monster hates him the way Donald Trump hates Rosie O’Donnell.*
Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Von Wafer (0.79). Houston has mixed things up a little in McGrady’s absence, starting Ron Artest at SG and Battier at SF. So, wave goodbye to Luther head, who even when he gets huge chucks of minutes thanks to injures (usually Tracy McGrady injuries) is a marginal fantasy player. And say hello to a revolving cast that includes Wafer, Aaron Brooks, and Head. Wafer had the best game off the bench for Houston last night, scoring 18 with a couple threes. It came against Golden State, so I’d forget about the entire Houston bench for now.
After that… ah, Hakim Warrick (0.43) scored 14 points for the Griz.
The Biggest Loser: In 40 minutes for the Clippers, Al Thornton (-0.85) went 3-13 shooting and finished with 9 points and 3 boards. Thornton had scored 20+ in each of his previous 3 games, so expect him to bounce back and continue to tear in up in his sophomore season.
Danny Granger (-0.4) – with 4 points and 2 boards – disappointed children around the world with his performance.
All Eyez on Me: Golden State (5-14) at San Antonio (10-8): Sound the alarm. Your Golden State game alert! Get all those marginal Spurs into your lineup. I expect a big game from David Robinson.
Atlanta (12-6) at Dallas (10-8): With 1 more block, Josh Smith can become the youngest person to 800 blocks (which seems like an arbitrary number, but impressive nonetheless) beating out Shaq by a few days. I’m going to guess Smith gets at least 1 block in this game.
New Jersey (10-8) at Philadelphia (9-11): Brand is day-to-day with a strained hamstring. Marreese Speights started in his place against Detroit and finished with 8 points and 6 boards. Donyell Marshall also escaped from his nursing home to hit a couple threes and block a shot in 14 minutes.
* Anyone catch Rosie’s “performance†on the Christmas at Rockefeller Center special this week? It was the ultimate train wreck in a show filled with one horrible thing after another. Except for Tony Bennett. He’s gold.
