Line of the Night: In a night full of freakish performances, Jermaine O’Neal (1.5) is freak of the night, and it has to be due to his 9 blocked shots. O’Neal also added 22 points and 9 rebounds in a loss to the Lakers, but we all know exactly why the player rater loves him today.

Honorable Mentions: It is pretty clear who is picking up the slack in Andrew Bynum’s absence. Hint: it’s not Lamar Odom. No, Pau Gasol (1.45) had a 31 points, 12-17 shooting, 15 rebounds night in the Lakers’ win; Lebron James (1.41) “only” dropped 52 at MSG to Kobe’s 61, but he did have a triple-double with 10 rebounds and 11 assists (that’s what happens when you stick David Lee and Tim Thomas on Lebron); and speaking of triple-doubles, Stephen Jackson (1.23) had a 30/11/10, which amazingly, was the first triple-double of his career.

Wally Szczerbiak on Lebron’s performance, “A pretty impressive triple-double, I bet his fantasy owners are pretty happy.”

Not as happy as Jermaine O’Neal’s owners should be.

Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Good old Anthony Johnson (1.14). You know, the 34 year old veteran who has played for 7 teams, including the Hawks 3 different times? Well, now he plays for the Magic and is filling in for the injured Jameer Nelson at point. And so far, Johnson is filling in as well as I fill in my pants, as he went 9-11 from the floor and 6-8 from three to finish with a season-high 25 points against the Clippers. Johnson will not, I repeat NOT, keep this up, but Jameer Nelson owners might want to pick him up if he’s available as a stopgap until Nelson returns.

The Biggest Loser: Expectations aren’t super high for Ryan Gomes (-0.58), but he was looking good for the past couple weeks – scoring double-digit points in the Wolves previous 5 games. But that streak feel apart yesterday, as Gomes shot 1 of 10 from the field, and finished with 3 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 40 minutes. That is a whole lot of minutes to end up with a line like that.

All Eyez on Me: The NBA is diverting from their usual two game schedule on Thursdays to run with three games tonight (don’t they know Thursdays are supposed to be easy day for me?). Well, we’ll forgive them since one of the games features last season’s finals matchup:

Los Angeles (39-9) at Boston (41-9) – I’m going to guess that the Celtics don’t let Kobe score 61 points on them tonight. Last time they met on Christmas Day, Kobes scored 27 with 9 boards and 5 assists, which I think his fantasy owners would be happy with again. KG may or may not play in the game tonight depending how he’s doing with the flu. If he sits, expect Gasol to have another good game in Bynum’s absence.

Dallas (29-19) at Utah (27-22) – The Mavs credit Jason Kidd and his taking over the offensive play calling for the team as the reason for their 4 game win streak. That may be so, but the results don’t seem to be translating into his fantasy line. Kidd’s assists may be up a bit in the Mavs last 4 games (9.5 compared to his season average of 8.3), but it has come at the expense of his scoring, which is down by just as much (7.5 from 8.9). Ok, he still gets a lot of assists and can’t score, I don’t know why I’m complaining about that so much.

Also, for some reason, I really want Brandon Bass to put it all together this year. I don’t know why. I don’t even own him on any fantasy teams.

I just noticed this morning that Yahoo has taken Elton Brand off of their "Can't Cut List." HUZZAH!

  • Kevin

speaking of brand, do you guys think he'll pick it up? I've been tryign to work out a trade with the person who owns him. What do you guys think would be proper value/ balancing the risk vs. reward. Diaw for Brand?

Damn, too bad you're not in my league. There are certain players I come to detest, and want off my team. I'm only hesitating on dropping Brand once and for all now to see if he comes correct after taking these games off.

Well, this this article is to be believed, Brand is done for the season after deciding to have surgery on his shoulder. Hopefully that news came in time for you Kevin. Nothing is quite like the string of trading for a player right before he gets hurt.
