Line of the Night: Charlie Villanueva (1.23) scored 28 points for the Bucks, hitting 5-10 threes, and adding 8 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals for the best fantasy line of yesterday. It’s about what you’d expect with only 4 games. But I will say that since Michael Redd went down, Charlie has been everything we’ve always wanted him to be. Ride him the rest of the year.
Honorable Mentions: In one of the most predictable subplots of the year, Milwaukee signs Luke Ridnour, Milwaukee gives Luke Ridnour the starting job for no apparent reason, Luke Ridnour gets hurt, Luke Ridnour gets hurt again, Ramon Sessions (1.03) finally gets his opportunity and explodes. Yesterday’s Bucks game included 26 points on 8-12 shooting, 7 assists and 4 steals for Sessions; and Emeka Okafor (0.81) had 19 and 16 with 3 blocks in a Bobcats win.
Waiver Wire Line of the Night: With Brand out, I toyed with the idea of picking up Marreese Speights (0.87) in a couple leagues last week before deciding against it because his minutes were too inconsistent. While that still may be the case, Speights dunked his way to career-high 24 points against the Suns, adding 7 boards and 2 blocks in a whopping 24 minutes. The 76ers seemed impressed and Speights could be headed towards one of those March/April fantasy runs that seem to come out of nowhere every season.
Biggest Loser: Nels gave the award to Mike Dunleavy owners yesterday. Today, I’m going to up the ante by giving it to Al Jefferson owners. Jefferson actually hurt himself in Sunday’s game against New Orleans, but it was found out late yesterday that Jefferson is done for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. This is a huge blow both to fantasy owners as well as the Wolves, who already had a super thin frontcourt. Time to update your injury prone lists (Jefferson is on mine). The two guys who might slightly benefit from the injury are Kevin Love and Ryan Gomes. Both should see more minutes for the rest of the season and a bigger role in Minnesota’s “offense.”
Sticking with on the court bad play, Al Thornton (-0.56) only scored 6 points off 3-13 shooting and had 2 rebounds in 29 minutes as the Clippers scored an abysmal 73 points against the Bobcats.
All Eyez on Me:Toronto (19-34) at Minnesota (17-33) – The Raptors roll into Minnesota to take on an Al Jefferson-less Wolves team. It’s an opportunity to see what kind of rotation Kevin McHale throws out on the court and if Brian Cardinal is somehow involved.
New York (21-29) at Golden State (17-35) – The Golden Ticket + Mike D’Antoni = fantasy potential that is difficult to comprehend. The last time they met in late November, the Knicks pulled out a 138-125 win in MSG.
