Line of the Night: Josh Howard (1.38) apparently has a vendetta against the Milwaukee Bucks for the way they beat down Dallas in January (a 133-99 loss if your scoring at home). That sounds about 500 notches below the Lakers/Celtics feud from the 80’s, but if it motivates Howard perform like he did last night, I guess we’re on board. Howard finished the game soaked in blood, but did shoot 10-16 from the floor, scoring 27 points with 4 threes, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocks.

Honorable Mentions: While he didn’t provide quite enough defense to take home the LotN, Devin Harris (1.23) dropped 42 on Bulls, adding 3 threes and 6 assists (while going 11-11 from the line). New Jersey, Chicago, and Milwaukee are not practically in a dead heat for the last playoff spot in the East; Dwight Howard (1.06) vs. Jared Jeffries went as you would expect – Howard had 24 and 21 with 4 blocks (although he didn’t drop 50) and Jeffries had no points or rebounds; and with Tim Duncan sitting out with a leg injury , Tony Parker (0.97) grabbed the reins from the big man and led the Spurs with 39 points, 9 assists and 5 boards.
Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Coming in at number 9 on the night was Dominic McGuire (0.8), who had a 14 point/14 board/3 block performance for the Wizards. The second-year forward now has 41 rebounds in his last 4 games – and if you’re in need of blocks or rebounds, he could be your man.
The Mavs went small against Milwaukee and Brandon Bass (0.76) was the guy who benefited the most from that decision. Bass came off the bench to finish with 18 and 11 with 4 blocks in 30 minutes; and is there anyone less respected in this world than the center who shoots the three? (maybe the crack whore, as Norm Macdonald used to say). Matt Bonner (0.69) is still only owned in 44% of Yahoo leagues. He scored 15 points with 9 boards and 3 treys against Joel Przybilla and the Blazers.
The Biggest Loser: One of my pet peeves is injured guys who attempt to play through their injuries, but then chicken out after a few minutes, effectively wasting a game that you could have plugged someone else into. Allen Iverson (-0.51) used to be a guy that would play with the flu through a concussion on one broken leg. But now he’s getting older, a little more tender, and a little more likely to pack it in for the night if his body isn’t feeling right. Iverson started for Detroit, but came out of the game after 8 minutes when his back stiffened up in the first quarter. He gave his owners 2 points and an assist before he left the game.
On the other hand, Steve Blake (-0.8) “topped” Iverson in a whole 24 minutes on the court – he had no points on 0-9 shooting and 1 assist.
All Eyez on Me: The NBA gives us Two-for-Thursdays today, and while Nels hates recapping all that action on Fridays, you have to admit the games themselves are usually good ones.
Cleveland (44-11) at Houston (36-21) – The Dream Shake has a good breakdown of the matchups in this one, so we’ll let him to the heavy lifting (the Shake is predicting good things from Aaron Brooks). Delonte West, who sat out the Cavs last game, should play in this one. Looks like Cleveland is going to prevent him from playing in back-to-back games for a while.
Phoenix (32-24) at Los Angeles (47-10) – You best be putting all your Suns/Lakers into your lineups today for this game (ok, all you Adam Morrison groupies get a pass). We’ve gotten to see what the new Suns look like against decent opponents – they let the Celtics throw down 128 on them and Charlotte scored 112. Since The Lakers average a league best 109 points a game, expect some big offensive performances in this one.
