Two injury related notes on this Friday evening.

Going into the season, I really thought this might be the year Kevin Martin rose above his muddled injury history and strung together 75+ games. The lesson, as always, is that I’m an over-optimistic, magic bean buying idiot. Martin, who fractured his left wrist on Monday when he got tangled up with Allen Iverson (the destroyer of fantasy performers league-wide), has opted for surgery to repair the injury after talking with doctors today. The procedure will keep him sidelined for at least 8 weeks, or a good 25 games.

Beno Udrih will likely take Martin’s place in the lineup for now. While Udrih is no Kevin Martin, he’s a decent fantasy player when given 33+ minutes a game. He doesn’t do anything particularly well, but brings and all-around game with steals, threes and assists. Pick him up immediately if he’s available in your league and you could use a guard.

The choice to keep or dump Martin is up to you and the space that you have on your bench. Two months is a long time to wait for his return and there is no guarantee that he’ll be back on schedule or be healthy when he returns. But if you have a big bench, he’s currently the second ranked player on our player rater for the season, thanks to 30.6 points and 3.4 threes a game he was averaging so far this season.

Tyrus Thomas will also be out for a while. The Bulls’ forward broke his forearm while weight training today (has Francisco Garcia taught us nothing) and will likely be out for the next 4-6 weeks after receiving surgery to repair it.

Rookie Taj Gibson – who started in place of Thomas on Thursday – will continue to start in his place. Gibson scored 11 points with 7 boards and a block in 34 minutes against the Cavs in that game and is definitely worth an add if you were one of the unlucky son-of-bitches who drafted Thomas early in anticipation of a breakout year.

Last year it was amare...this year it's kmart....xD

I traded David West for Martin last season in my keeper league (my ONLY league this year.) I regret nothing. Owning Martin when he's playing well is... intoxicating. Plus my league has 3 IR spots, so I'll make it work.
  • You're a lucky man to play in a league with IR spots. My GMTR team with Martin and 3 bench spots is supremely jealous.
  • Adam Wisniewski
Being that I'm old, I have a hard time hearing KMart as anything but Kenyon, so seeing a trade for "KMart" makes me laugh. But I don't have IR spots, so that's a bummer.
  • I Kenyon is also the first name that pops into my head when I see KMart as well. Just like AI will never mean Andre Iguodala to me.
  • I own Martin as well in one of my two leagues but I'll be keeping him. As the first dude said, it's too good when he is playing to let it go. Plus you just know some derg will pick him up and then taunt you with him in March. I'll got an article about it (http://fourpointplay.weebly.com/3/post/2009/11/...) Sorry for the shameless self promotion.
  • I don't mind the self-promotion. As long as it's shameless, I'm in.

Yeah, I also agree you just have to bite the bullet and hold on to Martin for the next couple of months. I'm playing in an ESPN experts league where I currently have Martin and Blake Griffin and a total of 3 bench spots with no IR. It's enough to make me hate myself.
