Line of the Night: Josh Smith (1.38) owners have to be happy whenever they see him terrorize the box score like the multi-category monster that he’s drafted to be. And yesterday against the Nuggets Smith was a monster, scoring a season high 22 points on 8-10 shooting with 9 boards, 7 assists and 6 blocks. Smith is now averaging 2.9 blocks on the season and an amazing 58% shooting. Neither of those will stay at that level, but at least he’s off to a decent start this season.
Honorable Mentions: Dirk Nowitzki (1.09) continues to light up the box score on a semi-nightly basis. Dirk was 12-20 from the field – scoring 29 points with 9 boards – to help with Mavs roll over Toronto 129-101; Joakim Noah (1.04) continues his assault on facial hair and opposing defenses with a big double-double of 24 and 16. He was also 10-12 shooting; Deron Williams (1.00) scored 29 points with 15 assists against the Kings; and it’s good to see John Salmons (0.94) shake off the funk with 27 points on 9-16 shooting.
Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Jodie Meeks (0.63). The Milwaukee rookie got 27 minutes off bench for the Bucks and scored 19 points while hitting 5 of his 7 three point attempts. While the game came against the fantasy lighter fluid known as the New York Knicks, Meeks has steadily gained playing time in Michael Redd’s absence (Charlie Bell was never, never going to work). Let’s see how in does in the Bucks next game before actually picking him up, but Meeks should get enough playing time to be worth an add in deeper leagues.
Craig Smith (0.37) scored 18 points with 5 boards and a couple steals in 23 minutes off the bench for the Clippers. I’d recommend him, but the fact he shot 8-11 from the field means that he got lucky basically; and Josh Boone’s (-0.12) game wasn’t anything special (8 points, 12 boards) but with Yi Jianlian out the next few weeks, Boone should see a lot of time at PF for the Nets. Check him out if you need rebounds.
Who Saw This Coming: Allen Iverson has taken a leave of absence from the Grizzlies because (you might want to sit down for this) he’s unhappy over his playing time and role with the team. If you happen to still own Iverson in any league, just cut all ties with him at this point. Iverson will be away from the team for an undisclosed amount of time, so you’re better off picking up someone who isn’t going to throw a hissy fit every time they don’t start.
The Biggest Loser: Wilson Chandler (-0.67) – 1 of 10 from the floor, 3 points, 4 boards, 1 assist. It’s not a train wreck, but it’s at least a multi-car pileup.
All Eyez on Me: Six games today, including:
Golden State (1-3) at Sacramento (2-4) – Tweleve Days in and my first Golden Ticket game to report on. In Kevin Martin’s absence, it’s time to ride Tyreke Evans (who led the Kings with 32 points last night) and to a lesser extent, Beno Udrih. And the GSW are already hurting again. Brandan Wright is out the next month after injuring his shoulder and Ronny Turiaf and Andris Biedrins are day-to-day. All that can only mean one thing: its Anthony Randolph time, bitches.
Phoenix (5-1) at Washington (2-4) – What the hell is up with Caron Butler’s game or, more accurately, lack of game? Bullets Forever takes a look at 5 ways to get Caron going. I’d argue that playing Phoenix is one of those ways.
Orlando (5-1) at Oklahoma City (2-3) – Vince Carter might return for this game. For some reason, that is not a comforting statement. With Ryan Anderson out of this game with a sprained ankle, expect to see more of Mickael Pietrus and Brandon Bass.
