Plantar Fasciitis
A few NBA players are currently suffering from this injury or condition at the moment. Ron Artest of the Los Angeles Lakers is playing through it over the last several games. This was also the cause of Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls to miss a game against Houston and possibly a few more. Noah’s teammate, Taj Gibson, is also playing through it.
I thought I would shed a little bit more light about the injury for those who are not so medically inclined; to better understand how it will affect their fantasy players and their nightly performances.
Here is a brief definition according to American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
“When your first few steps out of bed in the morning cause severe pain in the heel of your foot, you may have plantar fasciitis (fashee-EYE-tiss). It’s an overuse injury affecting the sole or flexor surface (plantar) of the foot. A diagnosis of plantar fasciitis means you have inflamed the tough, fibrous band of tissue (fascia) connecting your heel bone to the base of your toes.”

This tissue that gets inflamed is also the same tissue that Danny Granger tore earlier this season and caused him to miss several weeks of NBA action.
The most common treatment for Plantar Fasciitis is rest and non-steroidical anti-inflamatory drugs (NSAIDS), like Ibuprofen. This was why Joakim Noah may miss a few games. The injury makes it difficult or painful to put weight on the foot and thus may affect movement considerably. It takes time for this inflammation to subside. This means that these players will have either missed games, or poor fantasy performances for the next couple or weeks or so.
I opted to sit Noah in a couple of leagues for this week. Robin Lopez, a recent pick up of mine, will be starting in his place.
The players should return to “normal” in due time. For now, expect some erratically poor-production games from them.
