Line of the Night: The Golden State Warriors are fantasy magic, mostly for their opponents, but as long as Don Nelson doesn’t get in the way the Warriors can bust out themselves from time to time. With Monta Ellis not playing in last night’s game because of a knee injury, Stephen Curry (1.87) took over the game in a major way and recorded his first career triple-double with 36 points, 10 boards and 13 assists in the 132-102 win over the Clippers. He was also 7-11 from three and had 3 steals. Curry has been about 5 times better than any fantasy expert expected going into the year and kudos to those who saw this performance coming and grabbed him up early in the season.
Honorable Mentions: With Kobe sitting out again, Pau Gasol (1.27) and Lamar Odom (1.23) led the Lakers to their third straight win. Gasol scored 22 points, adding 19 rebounds and 5 blocks, while Odom contributed 25 and 11 with 3 steals and 2 blocks.
Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Even with the Warriors scoring 132 points, the WWLoTN actually goes to Steve Blake (1.19), who started at SG for the Blazers and scored 20 points with 12 assists and a couple of threes in 38 minutes on the court. With Brandon Roy expected back after the all-star break, Blake’s minutes and fantasy value will quickly return to what they were before this outburst.
Honorable Mentions: Attempting to shake up the team somehow, the Kings have been trying to get Beno Udrih (1.03) more involved in the offense. Yesterday it worked as Udrih scored 22 points on 8-10 shooting while getting 35 minutes off the bench. The Kings also won, so don’t be surprised if Udrih continues to see an increased playing time after the break; Anthony Morrow (0.99) dropped 26 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists on the Clippers. If he’s available in your league, he’s worth a look, especially if Corey Maggette were to miss any additional time; Nazr Mohammed (0.93) had a 21 point, 20 rebound explosion against the Wolves and is seriously playing well recently. Time to give the old man one more shot if you need center help; and Anthony Tolliver (0.90) added a career-high 29 points on 11-16 shooting in the Warriors win. Unlike Morrow, his value will be a little more short-lived.
Injury of the Night: Derrick Rose bruised his hip two-minutes-and-change into the Bulls/Magic game and had to leave for good. Initial tests came back negative, but we’ll hear more about his situation in the next couple of days.
The Biggest Loser: Well, we could certainly go with the Nets, who drew 1,016 fans last night to watch the worst team in the league play the Bucks. However, the blizzard that hit the east coast had a lot to do with that turnout, so instead we’ll turn to…
Mehmet Okur (-0.71). The Jazz played like crap against the Lakers as a team, only scoring 81 points and shooting 2-13 from three and 13-25 from the line. Okur had the worst fantasy line among the Jazz’ starters, scoring 6 points on 3-10 shooting. And Carlos Boozer’s (-0.62) 11 points and 10 rebounds was overshadowed by the fact that he had an abysmal shooting game, going 4-13 from the field and 3-9 from the line.
All Eyez on Me: The last night of games before the all-star break sees Orlando (36-17) at Cleveland (42-11) and San Antonio (29-21) at Denver (35-17). I could talk about the three good shooting games Vince Carter has put up in a row, or the return of Carmelo Anthony to the lineup, but I think George Hill has captured the nation’s attention with the nude photos of himself (don’t worry, just a link to the story, no giant dongs involved) that were recently posted online. Not that I endorse that kind of thing.
The GMTR FreeRoll: Congratulations to both joel44 and Addicted, who tied for first in this week’s fantasy contest at 365 Fantasy Sports. As you can see below, they took very different routes to the goal, but their general avoidance of all things Clippers was definitely a key to victory.
