Day 119 of 170: Unlike the Dunk Contest, Gerald Wallace Walks Tall

Line of the Night: Rarely does a player have a fantasy line that is so much better than everyone else that he puts all to shame by comparison. When it does happen, it’s usually when LeBron goes off for some crazy triple-double. But last night, Gerald Wallace (1.74) stood head and shoulders above the (admittedly weak) crowd. Wallace finished with 32 points on 10-17 shooting. He was also 10-11 from the line, had 12 boards, 5 assists and 4 steals. The Bobcats eventually lost to the Clippers 98-94, and since the world loves a scapegoat, you can blame the loss on today’s biggest loser.

Bobcats Clippers Basketball

Honorable Mentions: With only 5 games yesterday, it was a rather slow day at the office. Andrew Bogut (1.2) continues to dominate for the Bucks like some kind of Australian Moses Malone. He pulled down a huge 24 and 20 against David Lee (0.26) and the Knicks; Andray Blatche (1.04) has also been playing out of this world since Brendan Haywood left town. Blatche scored 25 points with 11 boards, 2 steals and 2 blocks as the Wizards beat the Bulls 101-95; and Joe Johnson (0.85) scored 28 points with 6 rebounds and 6 assists as the Hawks beat the Jazz in Salt Lake City for the first time in 17 years. While that sounds impressive, the Washington Generals haven’t beat the Harlem Globetrotters since 1971.

How about that Encore Performance: If Tracy McGrady’s (-0.23) first game with the Knicks resulted in a collective orgasm for the city, then his second game had the sting and burning of some horribly painful STD. McGrady was 5-14 from the floor in this one and finished with 15 points, 4 boards and 1 assist in 30 minutes. The Knicks only scored 67 points in the game and McGrady was their leading scorer.

Waiver Wire Line of the Night: He isn’t always pretty or consistent, but Rasual Butler (0.8) is now the Clippers starting small forward and getting big minutes. Butler got 38 minutes of run against the Bobcats and finished with the fifth best line of the night – 20 points and 4 threes (like I said, not a night we’ll remember at the end of the season).

The trade of Ronnie Brewer has opened up some minutes for Kyle Korver (0.64). Korver scored 13 points against the Haws, hitting 2 threes with 5 rebounds and 3 steals in 29 minutes. Expect him to get 25-30 minutes of play behind C.J. Miles and Wesley Matthews and be a fabulously mediocre source of threes the rest of the season. Personally, I’d still rather have Eddie House (-0.01), even with his 4-16 shooting night.

The Biggest Loser: Technically, someone like Mehmet Okur (-0.43), who only played 16 minutes coming off an injury and finished with 6 points and 3 rebounds, had one of the worst game scores of the night. And collectively, the Knicks had a pathetic offensive game against the Bucks.

But I have to point out Stephen Jackson’s (-0.24) 1-16 shooting performance against the Clippers. While he made up for the horrible shooting night somewhat with 6 boards, 5 assists and 4 steals, that one game is enough to sabotage your FG% category for the week in H2H leagues. Unless, of course, your team happens to be filled with Knicks not named David Lee.

All Eyez on Me:

New York (19-36) at Boston (35-19) – When your team has a horrible shooting night, the best thing to do to get things going is head to Boston to take on the Celtics. Ok, probably not. House and Nate Robinson will get to take on their former teams and we’ll see what, if anything, Sergio Rodriguez can do against Rajon Rondo. In his first start with the Knicks, Rodriguez only scored 4 points with 1 assist, but did contribute 8 steals. It’s tough to know what to do with that type of game going forward.

New Orleans (30-26) at Cleveland (43-14) – Break em up. The Cavs have lost two straight since Antawn Jamison joined the team. But in his second game as a Cav, Jamison proved that at least his fantasy value will remain intact as he finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds in 31 minutes.

The Golden Ticket: Philadelphia (21-34) at Golden State (16-39) – Allen Iverson has left the Sixers again to deal with a family situation and word is that he could be done with the team for good. At the very least, he should be done with your fantasy team.
