Nels, Erik and I joined nine of our closest friends to participate in a mock draft last night over at Mock Draft Central. As with most mock drafts, it featured its fair share of trash talk, surprise picks, and discussion about Greg Oden’s fashion sense.

Here are the results of the mock with some brief commentary about guys who I think may have gone a little too soon or too late. I’m generally going to avoid getting in the heads of the mock drafters to explain why a pick made sense or not in context of each team. If any of the mockers want to explain how and why their team was successfully built (or not), please hit us up in the comments.

    On to the mock…

    Round 1

    1. The Boogerboys – Durant, Kevin
    2. Tales of 9 Cats – James, LeBron
    3. King of all Mocks – Paul, Chris
    4. Helmut’s Helmets – Nowitzki, Dirk
    5. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Bryant, Kobe
    6. GMTR_Patrick – Granger, Danny
    7. Erik@GMTR – Williams, Deron
    8. fBasketballBlog – Gasol, Pau
    9. Pha Jamma Slamma – Curry, Stephen
    10. Nels@GMTR – Wade, Dwyane
    11. I can stop at any time – Anthony, Carmelo
    12. Skeeter’s Bounce – Nash, Steve

It memory serves, both Helmut’s Helmets and S(Odom) and Gamorrah were not able to attend the draft and had their teams auto drafted. Overall, there were not too many surprises in the first round until we get to a one Mr. Steve Nash, who makes a rare first round appearance. Even though I just said I wouldn’t get into the heads of the mockers, the Nash pick makes more sense in context of…

    Round 2

    13. Skeeter’s Bounce – Rondo, Rajon
    14. I can stop at any time – Lee, David
    15. Nels@GMTR – Stoudemire, Amar’e
    16. Pha Jamma Slamma – Howard, Dwight
    17. fBasketballBlog – Wallace, Gerald
    18. Erik@GMTR – Lopez, Brook
    19. GMTR_Patrick – Bosh, Chris
    20. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Roy, Brandon
    21. Helmut’s Helmets – Kidd, Jason
    22. King of all Mocks – Iguodala, Andre
    23. Tales of 9 Cats – Smith, Josh
    24. The Boogerboys – Evans, Tyreke

Skeeter was hell bent on going for the double-PG bounce it seems. When both Deron Williams and Stephen Curry went early, he stayed the course with Nash and Rondo. Nels went into a state of anaphylactic shock after his Amar’e pick, but I actually kind of like the Wade/Amar’e combo in a this is either going to be awesome or go down in a burst of flames kind of way. Bosh at #19? I probably should have went with my instinct and grabbed Josh Smith, but the image of Wade hobbling off the court kept popping in my head. #24 might seem early for Tyreke Evans, but he just went at #10 in the CBS 30-Man league. Now THAT is early.

    Round 3

    25. The Boogerboys – Wall, John
    26. Tales of 9 Cats – Johnson, Joe
    27. King of all Mocks – Billups, Chauncey
    28. Helmut’s Helmets – Ellis, Monta
    29. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Westbrook, Russell
    30. GMTR_Patrick – Jefferson, Al
    31. Erik@GMTR – Bargnani, Andrea
    32. fBasketballBlog – Horford, Al
    33. Pha Jamma Slamma – Bogut, Andrew
    34. Nels@GMTR – Boozer, Carlos
    35. I can stop at any time – Duncan, Tim
    36. Skeeter’s Bounce – Murphy, Troy

The first WOW moment of the draft saw John Wall go at #25 overall. Maybe Boogerboys is a Wizards fan? Wall is basically a lock to win the rookie of the year and is going to deliver points, assists and steals on a consistent basis, but he is going to see his fair share of 5-16 shooting nights like the one he put up in the Wizards’ second preseason game. And if Wall is coming off the board, I guess it’s time for Russell Westbrook to come off as well.

    Round 4

    37. Skeeter’s Bounce – West, David
    38. I can stop at any time – Pierce, Paul
    39. Nels@GMTR – Gasol, Marc
    40. Pha Jamma Slamma – Love, Kevin
    41. fBasketballBlog – Hilario, Nene
    42. Erik@GMTR – Collison, Darren
    43. GMTR_Patrick – Williams, Mo
    44. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Rose, Derrick
    45. Helmut’s Helmets – Gay, Rudy
    46. King of all Mocks – Randolph, Zach
    47. Tales of 9 Cats – Richardson, Jason
    48. The Boogerboys – Noah, Joakim

Pretty standard looking round 4. West, Pierce, Gasol, Nene and Randolph all delivered more value last season than the spots they were picked at here. If I was doing a little less chatting during the draft and a little more paying attention, I would have grabbed Randolph with pick 43. Both Kevin Love and Collison should get increased opportunity to play this season and make intriguing picks in this round.

    Round 5

    49. The Boogerboys – Camby, Marcus
    50. Tales of 9 Cats – Felton, Raymond
    51. King of all Mocks – Jackson, Stephen
    52. Helmut’s Helmets – Jamison, Antawn
    53. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Ginobili, Manu
    54. GMTR_Patrick – Martin, Kevin
    55. Erik@GMTR – Green, Jeff
    56. fBasketballBlog – Gallinari, Danilo
    57. Pha Jamma Slamma – Brooks, Aaron
    58. Nels@GMTR – Deng, Luol
    59. I can stop at any time – Harris, Devin
    60. Skeeter’s Bounce – Gordon, Eric

I like Felton a lot this year, although his shooting percentage is likely going to head back into the fugly range. I almost went with Kevin Martin in the round before, but I’ve been known to associate with players who can’t stay on the court. And both Boozer and Deng for Nels? He must have ranked his players while wearing his official Michael Jordan reading glasses.

    Round 6

    61. Skeeter’s Bounce – Blatche, Andray
    62. I can stop at any time – Mayo, O.J.
    63. Nels@GMTR – Kaman, Chris
    64. Pha Jamma Slamma – Ariza, Trevor
    65. fBasketballBlog – Arenas, Gilbert
    66. Erik@GMTR – Garnett, Kevin
    67. GMTR_Patrick – Millsap, Paul
    68. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Davis, Baron
    69. Helmut’s Helmets – Butler, Caron
    70. King of all Mocks – Aldridge, LaMarcus
    71. Tales of 9 Cats – Randolph, Anthony
    72. The Boogerboys – Hibbert, Roy

Maybe a bit too early for Blatche in my opinion, but he definitely wasn’t going to make it back to Skeeter at 84. So if he wanted him, it was there or bust. Jason from fBasketballBlog answers the ‘when will Gilbert Arenas get drafted’ question. The sixth is a good round to take a chance on Anthony Randolph. It’s not the best round to take a chance on Roy Hibbert.

    Round 7

    73. The Boogerboys – Cousins, DeMarcus
    74. Tales of 9 Cats – Griffin, Blake
    75. King of all Mocks – Dalembert, Samuel
    76. Helmut’s Helmets – Crawford, Jamal
    77. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Terry, Jason
    78. GMTR_Patrick – Jennings, Brandon
    79. Erik@GMTR – Allen, Ray
    80. fBasketballBlog – Lewis, Rashard
    81. Pha Jamma Slamma – Odom, Lamar
    82. Nels@GMTR – Morrow, Anthony
    83. I can stop at any time – Nelson, Jameer
    84. Skeeter’s Bounce – Frye, Channing

DeMarcus Cousins should sue NBAdraft.net for making his top comparable player Eddy Curry. With Cousins and his running mate Dalembert off the board, the center position is already running close to empty at this point in the draft. Otherwise, there is a lot of value picks in this round with guys like Terry, Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis coming off the board a little later than their stats would suggest. My team was in desperate need of assists and already had a horrible FG%, so Jennings it was.

    Round 8

    85. Skeeter’s Bounce – Carter, Vince
    86. I can stop at any time – Thornton, Marcus
    87. Nels@GMTR – Landry, Carl
    88. Pha Jamma Slamma – McGee, JaVale
    89. fBasketballBlog – Udrih, Beno
    90. Erik@GMTR – Biedrins, Andris
    91. GMTR_Patrick – Kirilenko, Andrei
    92. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Stuckey, Rodney
    93. Helmut’s Helmets – Miller, Andre
    94. King of all Mocks – Okafor, Emeka
    95. Tales of 9 Cats – Hickson, J.J.
    96. The Boogerboys – Holiday, Jrue

It’s never a good sign when you precede your pick with the statement, “I hate myself for this pick”, which is what happened before Vince Carter came off the board. Round 8 is where some of the high reward guys – like McGee, Hickson and Holiday – start to get drafted. And that seems like a good round to me.

    Round 9

    97. The Boogerboys – Williams, Terrence
    98. Tales of 9 Cats – Salmons, John
    99. King of all Mocks – Conley, Mike
    100. Helmut’s Helmets – Turkoglu, Hedo
    101. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Turner, Evan
    102. GMTR_Patrick – Bynum, Andrew
    103. Erik@GMTR – Kleiza, Linas
    104. fBasketballBlog – Scola, Luis
    105. Pha Jamma Slamma – Ming, Yao
    106. Nels@GMTR – Batum, Nicolas
    107. I can stop at any time – Calderon, Jose
    108. Skeeter’s Bounce – Harrington, Al

That is a huge show of love for Terrence Williams, who was not in the starting lineup for the Nets in their preseason game against the Celtics. Hedo at 100 could be a steal if things work out on the Suns. Batum could also be a steal at 106. Ming at 105 seems about the place he should go. And it’s a lot easier to draft Bynum in a mock draft than a real one, but either way he should have been gone by the 9th round.

    Round 10

    109. Skeeter’s Bounce – Parker, Tony
    110. I can stop at any time – Diaw, Boris
    111. Nels@GMTR – Haywood, Brendan
    112. Pha Jamma Slamma – Brand, Elton
    113. fBasketballBlog – Augustin, D.J.
    114. Erik@GMTR – Lopez, Robin
    115. GMTR_Patrick – Beasley, Michael
    116. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Gordon, Ben
    117. Helmut’s Helmets – Hill, George
    118. King of all Mocks – Maggette, Corey
    119. Tales of 9 Cats – Thomas, Tyrus
    120. The Boogerboys – Splitter, Tiago

The big surprise here is Maggette falling all the way to 118 after finishing last season 64th on our player rater. But that’s what he gets for leaving the Warriors and having a foot injury to start the preseason. Good spot to take a chance on Tyrus Thomas, especially if the Bobcats end up moving Diaw. Interesting to see Tony Parker, George Hill and Tiagogo Splitter all go in the same round. Spurs run!

    Round 11

    121. The Boogerboys – Smith, J.R.
    122. Tales of 9 Cats – Ibaka, Serge
    123. King of all Mocks – Williams, Louis
    124. Helmut’s Helmets – Okur, Mehmet
    125. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Thompson, Jason
    126. GMTR_Patrick – Barbosa, Leandro
    127. Erik@GMTR – Hinrich, Kirk
    128. fBasketballBlog – Miller, Mike
    129. Pha Jamma Slamma – Sessions, Ramon
    130. Nels@GMTR – Williams, Reggie
    131. I can stop at any time – Childress, Josh
    132. Skeeter’s Bounce – Chandler, Wilson

Love the Mike Miller pick, even though he was less than impressive in the Heat’s first preseason game. There will be threes to take on that team and he will take them. Serge Ibaka is an interesting choice given that he still has to battle Nenad Krstic for minutes on the Thunder. Mehmet Okur fell like a runway model in this draft. I should have went with Sessions in my spot in case Mo Williams decides to leave the NBA to contemplate the meaning of life, but I incorrectly thought he might fall to the next round.

    Round 12

    133. Skeeter’s Bounce – Casspi, Omri
    134. I can stop at any time – Marion, Shawn
    135. Nels@GMTR – Favors, Derrick
    136. Pha Jamma Slamma – Harden, James
    137. fBasketballBlog – Varejao, Anderson
    138. Erik@GMTR – Outlaw, Travis
    139. GMTR_Patrick – Oden, Greg
    140. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Hawes, Spencer
    141. Helmut’s Helmets – Artest, Ron
    142. King of all Mocks – Flynn, Jonny
    143. Tales of 9 Cats – Jack, Jarrett
    144. The Boogerboys – DeRozan, DeMar

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Marion, once a top 3 fantasy guy, is now a 12th rounder and rightfully so. Varejao is a nice sleeper pick given that the Cavs are going to be horrible this year. Between Oden and Bynum, it might be possible I get an entire year of center combined.

    Round 13

    145. The Boogerboys – Johnson, Amir
    146. Tales of 9 Cats – Blair, DeJuan
    147. King of all Mocks – Milicic, Darko
    148. Helmut’s Helmets – Tolliver, Anthony
    149. S(Odom) and Gamorrah – Chandler, Tyson
    150. GMTR_Patrick – Beaubois, Rodrigue
    151. Erik@GMTR – Webster, Martell
    152. fBasketballBlog – Jefferson, Richard
    153. Pha Jamma Slamma – Johnson, Wesley
    154. Nels@GMTR – Haslem, Udonis
    155. I can stop at any time – Delfino, Carlos
    156. Skeeter’s Bounce – Young, Thaddeus

The best thing to do with the last round in a draft is to take a risk on a long shot who could break out in a big way. If it doesn’t work, you can drop him for roster flexibility. If it does, you’ve got an impact player on the cheap. Nothing worse than carrying around a just good enough to be worth owning, but not good enough to put in your lineup Richard Jefferson for half a year (just kidding Jason). Nice to see Darko get some love in this draft.

I was waiting all day for this. I agree on RJ, but I’m hoping his summer with Pop (which sounds like a great name for a film, by the way) will do him some good. Good stuff!

This Mock Draft has really helped me with my own ordering for my draft tonight! Thanks guys!!! I’m especially happy to see Wesley Johnson go so late. Makes me think I’ll be able to nab him tonight without having to overpay him. I could see him beating out Martell and Corey eventually, but the timeshare possibility is definitely a risk …
