Day 112 of 170: Night of the Waiver Wire Players

Line of the Night/ Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Carlos Delfino (2.49) helped the Bucks blow out the Clippers by hitting a career high 7 threes, along with 26 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. With Corey Maggette out of the lineup with a bad back, Delfino has now scored 47 points over his last two games, a pretty good sign that he’s now free and clear his early February shooting slump. Unfortunately for Delfino, Maggette is day-to-day and we will likely see a return to the more modest Delfino once the old man’s back heals.

Honorable Mentions: Josh Smith (1.85) had a monster 27 point, 14 rebound, 3 steal double-double in an Atlanta win over Detroit. Teammate Mike Bibby (1.17) decided that he was going to attack the basket more often in the game. If that means more games like last night’s 17 point, 6 board, 7 assist line, then what the hell have you been doing the past two years, Bibby?

A game after scoring 14 points, Shane Battier (1.74) dropped 17 on the Nuggets, going 3-3 from three and adding 5 assists.

The Lakers might not have an answer for the Bobcats, but Pau Gasol (1.39) has a question for your fantasy team. And that is what is a double-double Alex? The answer is 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists in the loss.

And finally, Kevin Love and the Wolves were no match for LaMarcus “I’m a beast” Aldridge (1.36), who had another strong game picking up the slack for nearly every injury Blazers’ player with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Pick Up Lines: It was a strange night on the court where the waiver wire crew in many ways outperformed everyone else. There was Delfino of course, while Courtney Lee (2.42) had the second best fantasy line of the night by leading all Houston scorers with 22 points, going 5-7 from three with 6 rebounds as the Rockets beat down the Nuggets 121-102. These type of outbursts are few and far between for the typically not-so-great on offense Lee, so don’t grab him because of one (or two if you count Feb 8th) good games.

Second year guard Gerald Henderson (1.56) has been getting more run for the Bobcats lately. Against the Lakers he finished with 18 points and a couple of blocks in 29 minutes. He’s been alternating good games with bad since mid-January, so ultimately Henderson is not consistent enough to be useful in all but the deepest leagues. But at 1% ownership, he should be available in those leagues.

Martell Webster (1.02) is back for the Wolves after missing 5 games with back spasms. And in a game that both Corey Brewer and Jonny Flynn were held scoreless, Webster came off the bench for 35 minutes, scored 17 points while hitting 4-5 from three. Wait for a repeat performance before picking him up.

Dante Cunningham (1.45) was supposed to benefit from the Marcus Camby injury. That hasn’t worked to plan, but he did have his best game since Camby went down, scoring 18 points with 13 rebounds and 2 steals. Camby is expected back relatively soon, so it’s too-little, too-late for Cunningham.

Rudy Fernandez (1.41) should see his value drop once Brandon Roy returns for the Blazers. But for now ride his strong games off the bench, like yesterday’s 18 points, 4-7 from three and 2 steals against the Wolves.

I like Jordan Hill (1.39) for deep leaguers if you need a big body. In his second game back from injury, he scored 11 points, with 6 boards and 3 blocks in that big Houston win over Denver.

Biggest Loser: I’m not sure what Nicolas Batum (-0.76) was doing on the court against the Wolves, but I don’t think it was basketball. Batum finished the game with 3 points on 1-5 shooting, 0 rebounds 4 assists and 3 turnovers. I like Batum and he’s only 22 years old, but his wild inconsistency makes him a difficult player to fully get behind at this point in his career. And I don’t mean get behind in an Erik kind of way…
