GMTR’s Top 150 Player List and Player Tiers by Position have been updated possibly for the last time as of 12/23, unless something else crazy happen like the Brook Lopez injury.

As I’m sure everyone has heard by now, Lopez has a stress fracture in his foot that will require surgery. Reports are that he’ll be out at least 6 weeks, but people who know about the type of injury he has say the more likely timetable is 12 weeks or so. That would put him out until the end of March and effectively ruining his fantasy value this season. He’s been removed from our top 150 as a result, but if you happen to play in a league with a very deep bench or possibly a weekly changes league, you may want to sit on Lopez if you have the luxury (a month of Lopez still slides him into the very bottom of the center tier).

The Nets reacted to the news quickly, trading for Mehmet Okur yesterday to start for the team at center. He looks healthy this season, so expect a bounceback year from the big man. Even at a slightly reduced play level from this peak, our projections have him at 91 overall (provided the Nets don’t trade for Dwight Howard). I’m sure Okur has been claimed by now in every fantasy league, but he could still be worth acquiring via trade if you’re really looking for an Andrea Bargnani type for your team.

The rankings also reflect the Chuck Hayes clean bill of health and resigning with the Kings. J.J. Hickson’s value drops back to where it was before Hayes’ contract was voided. Al Jefferson also get a minor bump in value now that Okur is gone.

Note that our rankings are based on a 9-category H2H league that includes turnovers.

Lebron James + Paul George for Deron Williams + Rudy Gay

      what’d you choose?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

Paul George has a lot of potential, but not THAT much. I’d take Deron and Rudy combo in a heartbeat. :)

So you think it would be prudent to drop Lopez for a generic WW big man if you are working with a 3 man bench? Drop for Okur/Hayes/someone worse?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

I dropped Lopez for Mehmet in my 10-man roto (2 Bench) and 12-man H2H (3 Bench).

      14 Team H2H 9 Category League

I was just wondering what kind of average I should be shooting for in each category for a 14 team league? I made a couple of trades and I currently have… (I was the 6th pick)

      PG: Tyreke Evans
      SG: Arron Afflalo
      G: John Wall
SF: Lebron James (Dwade for Dwight Howard, then Howard + Haywood for LBJ)
      PF: Rudy Gay
      F: Demarcus Cousins
      C: Andrew Bogut
      C: Ed Davis
      Util: Jeff Teague
      Util: Landry Fields
      Bench: Jordan Crawford
      Bench: Gordon Hayward
      Bench: Empty at the moment.

I’m just trying to get a general feel on who to move to improve which category. As a side note, I kinda made my own hybrid rankings combining yours and some other sites (Hence the reason why I have Wall, Cousins, and Evans) In terms of future plans, I’m looking to move Cousins and Rudy Gay (if they both start out decent/hot) for a stud Big man. That’s the plan at the moment, what do you think?

It’s tough to say exactly what the average weekly value would be for each category in a 14 team league because a lot of it is dependent on the competitiveness and the rules of the league. But using stats from last season (and this season’s 3.9 games per week average) a 14 team league where the top 168 players are in play, the per week averages would look something like this (assuming no streaming is allowed) and daily changes are kept to a minimum:

      PTS: 547
      REB: 211
      AST: 120
      STL: 38
      BLK: 25
      3M: 34
      TO: 71
      FG%: 46.6%
      FT%: 78.4%

And here is what your team comes out at using our 2011-12 projections and rotating your bench and UTIL guys at 50% time (with the caveat that our projections could be way off :) ). I did upgrade Ed Davis’ estimate a bit since we had him pretty low and you probably expect an improvement from him this season.

      PTS: 610
      REB: 244
      AST: 150
      STL: 45
      BLK: 33
      3M: 29
      TO: 95
      FG%: 46.7%
      FT%: 73.1%

So, overall it appears to be a strong team. Strengths in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. FG% is a toss-up. Weaknesses are TOs and FT% (not surprisingly with both Cousins and Bogut). You could look to move Cousins to improve those % categories, but he sort of fits the strengths of your team and you’s still have a way to go to be competitive in FT%.

First off, turning the 6th pick into LeBron is awesome work. Especially since Haywood will probably end up as a throwaway.

With your team, I’m not sure there’s a point in trying to get a better big man. Between Tyreke, Afflalo, Teague, and Wall, you are going to have a hard time surviving FG% even with LeBron, Bogut and Davis (even if you trade Cousins). If you trade Gay, you’re basically giving up on FG%, so you’d want to either get someone really awesome at Free Throws, or just give up on that and go for shoring up blocks and steals.

I’d say hang on to Gay and see if you can flip Cousins for a F who can make a three per game because then you’ll probably raise your FG% a bit and also raise your threes, making you more competitive in those categories.

Wow, thanks guys. Your insight and explanations are definitely much appreciated. Its like asking the cafeteria lady to slip in an extra patty in your burger but she slips in 2 patties, onion rings, bacon, and extra cheese :)

      Hungry…

    • Alex

      Hey Patrick,
I don’t want to bother you, and I’m not sure if these kind of posts are annoying as heck, so ignore it if is, but Im doing my first ever fantasy basketball league this year. I did a lot of research, much of which came from your site, and I joined one league, I figured I should devote my time to one league rather than many will I was still figuring it out. Anyways I joined a  10 team Roto league with cats: FG percentage FT percentage 3 point shots made PTS OREB DREB REB AST ST BLK and lineups of PG, SG, G, G, G, G, SF, PF, F, F, F, F, C, C, Util, Util, Util, Util, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN

I had a late pick in the first round and my team is:
      Pg: Russell Westbrook
      SG: Eric Gordon
      G:Tyreke Evans
      G: James Harden
      G: Louis Williams
      G: Jose Calderon
      Sf: Andre Igoudala
      Pf:Amare Stoudemire
      F:Paul George
      F: Anderson Varejao
      F: Marvin Williams
      F: Tryus Thomas
      C:Mark Gasol
      C: Andray Blatche
      UTl: Josh Mcroberts
      UTL:Jared Dudley
      UTL: Tristan Thompson
      UTL: Derrick Williams
      B:Rodrigue Beaubois
      B:Tracy Mcgrady
      B: Shaun Livingston
      B: Jan Vesley
      B: Brandon Rush

Off the top of your head am I too weak or too strong in anyone area?

Thank you so much for your time.

    • http://nelswadycki.com nelswadycki

Off the top of my head, what made you decide to join a league with 23 roster spots for your first ever fantasy basketball foray? Even with only 10 teams, that’s 230 players!

That said, you look a lot stronger in the big man categories… Westbrook and Calderon are you only real assist guys and if Westbrook only gets 6 a game like last year, then you’re probably in trouble in that category. If it were H2H that would be fine, but in Roto, I’d try to figure out how to get a few more assists on that team. Perhaps you could build up a nice cushion in rebounds and blocks and then trade someone like McRoberts (who looks like he’s going to have a good year for those categories) or Gasol or Varejao midway through the season for a big assist guy.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I have to agree with Nels. That is a crazy league, especially for your first one.

I can give you a full team diagnostic when I get the time later, but the first thing I notice is that your league has three rebounding cats – OREB, DREB and REB. So you were totally right in going big with your team. In fact, I might try to go even bigger to lock up the 3 rebounding cats, blocks and FG%. While a guy like Marvin Williams is nice to have in a league as big as yours, I’d try to hunt down a rebounding big for that spot, for example.

I also agree with Nels that in an ideal situation, it’d be great for you to have another assist guy. You’re probably not going to find one on waivers in this league (although the twitter rumors suggest the Knicks just signed Jeremy Lin, who you might want to check out) so you may have to work one in a trade. But that’s not something you have to do immediately, and it’s possible you could grab someone down the road if an injury happens to a starting PG.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

As a follow up, I ran your team through our 2011-12 projections and came with the following results (take this with a grain of salt with a league of this size).

Your team’s big strengths are points, steals, blocks and FT%. The only two big weaknesses you have are TOs and threes. We don’t project OREB or DREB, but in terms of overall REB you come out as slightly above average. I’d personally like to see that as the big strength of your team in this league since it’s basically 3 categories.

You’re also actually slight above average in assists believe it or not. In addition to your PGs, Iguodala and Tyreke Evans are pretty good assist men (provided that Evan plays up to expectations). It’s enough to at least make you surprisingly competitive in that category.

So my recommendation to you would be to focus on another rebounder for now.

    • Alex

      Patrick and Nels,
Thank you guys so much for the help. About the league, I figured I’d challenge myself, but next year ill probably be doing a more standard league. About assists, I also was worried, but i hoped that IGGY tyreke and Lou williams  would give me some to make me more competitive. I will def look for another rebounder. And, since I think Rubio will end up being a huge assist guy, I might look to grab him too to shore up assists. I am lucky that turnovers is not actually a category in my league, haha, because if it was, I would be in a bit of trouble.

Thanks again for the help guys.
