And I don’t just mean Three-Pointers. The Top THREE lines from last night came from Point Guards. There’s more…

Line of the Night: Kyle Lowry (2.44) is in his 7th year in the league, and has established himself as a high quality fantasy Point Guard because he can put up lines like this: 22 points (4 THREES – obviously there’s those threes too), 10 rebounds, 9 assists, and 2 steals. That’s close to THREE categories that he got to double-digits in. And he’s now up to #2 on the Player Rater for the season.

    Honorable Mentions:
Next up is D.J. Augustin (2.29) who has been in the league THREE less years than Lowry (his 4th) but is also looking like a an emerging star with 26 points (4 THREES), and 9 assists. Keep in mind, it took Lowry 6 years before he even got enough playing time to start putting up good looking fantasy numbers. Augustin owners probably got one of the better values in the draft since everyone was worried that Kemba Walker’s presence would cut in to Augustin’s playing time and stats. So far, so good for the people who bet on Augustin (especially if you scan down to the Biggest Loser section for today).

Kyrie Irving (2.22) is another Point Guard (obviously) who has been in the league THREE less years than Augustin. Irving isn’t having the same problems as Walker. He’s been much more consistent and productive, including his 20 points (8-10 from the field, 2 THREES), 6 assists, and 2 blocks. If you were betting on Walker over Irving, you might be better off with some Super Bowl Betting Lines. Irving is now averaging a block a game, which is awesome for a Point Guard. I’m sure most nobody drafted him for that, but if he can somehow keep it up (despite being 6′ THREE”) he might help a few Small Ball teams stay competitive in blocks (whether they care or not).

Okay, we’re done with the whole tenuous connection of THREES thing now…

James Harden (2.21) is off to an amazing and/or unexpected start this year, sitting at #12 on the Player Rater after his 23 points (3 threes, 6-6 from the line), 6 assists, and 3 steals last night.

Kobe Bryant (2.01) and Andrew Bynum (1.25) both did what they do best last night; Kobe with 37 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists; Bynum with 21 points, 22 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Together they accounted for more than 50% of the Lakers total output in Points.

After a rough first 3 games, Al Jefferson (1.72) seems to be back on track, having had 3 nice games in a row, including last night’s 26 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks.

Not a lot of WoW factor in these last three lines, but they’re up at the top, so here there are, plain and simple: Mike Conley (1.66) had 14 points (5-8 from the field), 7 assists, and 4 steals; Antawn Jamison (1.43) had 19 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks; Derrick Rose (1.42) with 30 points (3 threes), and 7 assists.

    ***

Personal Note: Since I have Rudy Gay on half of my fantasy teams, it is important to me to note that it looks like he has finally shaken off the rust, shooting 62.5% from the field last night. I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief now.

Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Sam Young (1.58) got 28 minutes in a blow out win against the Kings, so while his 20 points (8-13 from the field, 4-4 from the line), 7 rebounds, and 3 steals look impressive, it probably won’t be repeated often. Leave his 2% ownership rate as it is.

Pick Up Lines: Drew Gooden (1.21) started in place of Andrew Bogut who left the team for personal reasons. Brandon Jennings evidently said Bogut was dealing with something back home, which could mean he’ll be out a couple more days if it means flying back home to Australia and then flying back. In his absence, Gooden played 36 minutes and scored 24 points (12-20 from the field), with 12 rebounds (8% owned). If you’re in a deep league or a daily changes league with a Big Ball team, Gooden might be worth an add just in case Bogut ends up missing extended time.

Derrick Favors (0.82) is probably added already in leagues where he’s useful (35% owned) but if you’re in a deep league or have some other Waiver Wire fodder at the end of your bench, he’s worth a look after putting up 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Obviously he’s not going to break out unless there’s an injury on the Jazz front line, but he’s getting a consistent 22 minutes now and if he can put up 8 and 8 with a little over a block, he will be of value to Big Ball teams in standard size leagues.

Daniel Gibson (0.52) made another 2 threes to end with 8 points (14% owned). If you need some threes, especially in a daily changes league, Gibson has shown he’ll give you that. He’s also putting up almost a steal and a block in his 24 minutes. The key here is that he’s not a great player on an even worse team.

Two big guys to consider adding, especially in deep leagues are Nick Collison (0.48), who had 6 points, and 9 rebounds (4% owned), and D.J. White (0.48) who had 10 points, and 7 rebounds (7% owned). White has the lower rater line last night, but he’s the one to try to add first since Collison has only had 2 fantasy worthy games so far this year.

Biggest Loser: Kemba Walker (-1.17) continued his literal rollercoaster of stat lines, following up 17 points, 2 threes, 4 assists, and a steal with last night’s 2 points, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, and 1-6 from the field.

Injury Note: Devin Harris (-1.02) left the game after 17 minutes with a strained calf. He had 0 points, 0 rebounds, and 6 assists at the time. He is now Day-To-Day, and since he tends to not like to play a full season and dropped to #146 on the Player Rater, it’s hard for me to advocate holding on to him.

Hi guys.  I’m in a 10 team league, H2H, Daily.

I was offered Deron Williams and Josh Smith for Al Jefferson and Iguodala.  I have D. Howard and M. Gasol at C, and Joe Johnson/ S. Jackson at SG/SF.  Take it or leave it?

    • http://nelswadycki.com nelswadycki

Right now, you lose a lot in that trade. If you look at our projections, all 4 of those guys are in the Top 25, so it’s not like any of them are playing way over their head and you’re getting good value on one side or the other.

Smith and Jefferson are pretty equal, especially since you already have Howard to sink your FT%. Deron Williams is a slight upgrade over Iguodala according to our projections, even though Williams is playing a lot worse right now. I guess if your PG now is worse than Stephen Jackson (assuming he’ll be your new SF if you trade Iguodala), then it’s worth making that trade.

    • David

how would you rank c. butler, budinger, dudley, and g. henderson going forward in 8 team h2h league?

    • Jspawn

Thanks for that advice!  I’m still trying to understand true value on players.

How am I losing a lot on that trade right now?   I understand that Deron is underperforming at the moment.  But doesn’t that make him a ‘buy low’ candidate?

If Smith and Jefferson are pretty equal, and I have center depth, would it not be beneficial to receive the “best player” with the most upside in Deron?  Thanks for the comment and helping me understand why it may/or may not be worth it.

      Butler
      Henderson
      Dudley
      Budinger

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I like Dudley the best myself. But I agree with Nels with the rest of the order.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Who are the PGs or big assist guys on your team right now?

    • Jspawn

Thanks for asking:  Lawson, Conley, T. Douglas,  Diaw.  (I realize I have other PG’s, but I also have other C’s.)  Full roster in case any other questions:

      PG: Lawson
      SG: Iguodala
      SF: Joe Johnson
      PF: Al Jefferson
      C: D. Howard
G: Conley, S. Jackson, T. Douglas, Billups, (IR: Baron Davis)
F: S. Jackson, Diaw, Tyrus Thomas
      C: M. Gasol, Dalembert

My basic understanding of H2H is having potential studs gives you the best chance to win matchups each week.  I figured Josh Smith replaces Jefferson as a wash, and Deron can have larger “big category” days than Andre.    I’ve been using your player rater (which I love), but it seems too early to use it on what they have done thus far in 11-12, but rather use it based on preseason ranks.  Thanks for your advice and comments again!

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

It’s a great question regarding player value and one that could go on and on over the course of many blog posts at GMTR. One of the things that makes fantasy basketball great compared to something like fantasy football is that team building really is like putting a puzzle together where you’re trying to get all the pieces to fit with each other in some coherent way.

For me personally, there are three factors to evaluate when considering a trade. 1) overall value – are you getting the best players in the trade. 2) fit – are the players you getting a good fit with the strategy of your team and the statistical categories you need, and 3) the risk – are you significantly altering the risk profile of your team. If I trade away Marc Gasol for Andrew Bynum, overall that is about even value or maybe I come out ahead on a per game basis, but I am also adding a significant amount of risk to my team because of potential injuries.

In regard to the trade you mentioned, Williams/Smith probably have slightly more value than Jefferson/Iguodala IF all these guys play close to the level that most people expect of them this year.

In regards to fit, using the GMTR stat projections (with some minor on the fly modifications by me considering what we know now), the trade costs you in three categories – about 3 rebounds a game, 1 block and you’ll take a 2-3 TO jump a game. On the flip side, you’ll gain around 5 assists a game, over a three, 0.5 steals, and maybe 1-2 points. Unfortunately, one of Williams’ biggest strengths is his FT% (the trade is around a net 10% increase in FT% for you) which will probably go for naught on a team with DH on it. But other than that, the trade is a good fit. As you mentioned, with DH and Gasol and you could probably spare those rebs/blocks for a nice bump in those other categories. If you can find a way not to play Stephen Jackson (who has crazy high TOs) the turnover increase might not hurt you that much. Once Baron Davis comes back, you might actually end up a little assist heavy with that team, but I wouldn’t worry about that until Davis actually gets back on the court.

In terms of the risk profile of this trade, you would be taking on 2 guys who have underperformed so far this year and the risk of buying low is that guys stay the year low. That being said, I’m pretty confident that both Smith and Williams will bounce back as the season goes on, provided that Williams doesn’t completely give up if the Nets lose every single game until Lopez returns.

Well that went on too long – but to answer your question I think the trade is a slight plus in your favor with the understanding that there is a very small risk of it all blowing

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NVAPDOL57LBQYPKRFZWAIVUJUU mr.

Below is my team. I’m in an 8-team, 9-category H2H yahoo league. Can you give me any advice on what specific categories I need to improve? or any players I need to trade away or try to get? Thanks!

Jrue Holiday (Phi – PG), Jarrett Jack (NO – PG,SG), Brandon Jennings (Mil – PG), Rudy Gay (Mem – SF,PF), David West, Chris Bosh (Mia – PF,C), Luis Scola (Hou – PF,C) , Kevin Love (Min – PF,C), Spencer Hawes (Phi – C), Danilo Gallinari (Den – SF), Ty Lawson (Den – PG), Eric Gordon (NO – SG), Russell Westbrook

Patrick.  Great post.  Thanks for all of the specific info.

Look forward to reading some extra posts from you on this type of subject (in a general sense) as the year goes on.  You’re right that it’s a puzzle.  Learning strategies for putting the puzzle together is likely the difference between winning and losing.  With a little luck….

    • Orchix

Hi, I’m in a 10 team league, and I just heard about the zach randolph injury. if he’s out for that long, is it a good idea to drop him and pick up another player to contribute, or just play on and keep him until he recovers?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Rough one. Looks like Randolph is going to miss 6-8 weeks with a MCL tear. Whether to sit on him or drop him depends on the specifics of your league. Is it a weekly or daily changes league? Do you have a max games cap? How many bench spots do you have?

Depending on the specifics, you could run out and speculatively add
Dante Cunningham, who got the start at PF in the Griz last game, or Marreese Speights, who the Griz just signed. I’m not loving either of those guys though, especially not in a 10-team league.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Looks like a stacked team, even for a 8-owner league. A lot of good PGs in there. I’ll give you the full diagnosis a little bit later when I get a minute.

    • Guessed

Speights worth a speculative add in a 12-team league over any of these guys?  Brandon Rush, Jamal Crawford, Jordan Crawford, MarShon Brooks.

I’m a little thin on bigs right now with Gay, Nene, Bargnani, Dalembert, and Perkins as my only PF or C eligible players.

    • Reader and Fan: Mistah Yang

Do you think Cunningham is worth the add in 14 team leagues over say… Jonas Jerebko or Greg Stiemsma? Haha trying to find rebounders after I lost my big men in an effort to get Durant.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

The fact that you refer to Bargnani as a “big” does indeed imply your lacking in that department. He’s basically a PF/C-eligible SF-stat producer really. That being said, I’d gamble on Greg Steimsma or Speights. Marshon Brooks is a good add, but it looks like you need big men more right now.

    • Davo

I’ve seen a couple of times you’ve mentioned Dudley. I have him on my bench with Stuckey, both looking at D Wrights spot on court. As always I’m yet to make the right call as to who should get the start each night. Any suggestions.
Rest of my team is –
      Rose
      Harden
      Nowitzki
      Noah
      Holliday
      Harrington
      Cousins
      Billups
      Frye
      Anderson
      Wright
      Stuckey
      Dudley

      Any other suggestions?

    • Emily

      Bench: Boris Diaw
      Bench: Nicolas Batum
      Bench: DJ Augustin
      Bench: Nick Young

Any thoughts you can let me in on are GREATLY appreciated!

      -Emily

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

Off the top, an interesting move would be to trade Jennings and Gallo for guys with high FG% at good shot volume. Those 2 guys are probably the only one’s holding your team’s FG%

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Yeah, you could definitely drop Jordan Crawford and possibly Rush for one or two of the bigs that Erik mentioned.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

My wild guess is that Cunningham and Speights split time at PF for the Griz and neither amount to much fantasy wise. Speights has the higher upside of the two, I might grab him if you have the chance over Stiemsma, but I wouldn’t hold onto him long if it doesn’t pan out. I’d rather have both Jonas Jerebko or Greg Stiemsma over Cunningham though.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

According to a combination of our preseason player projections and the current season stats, here are the total stats your team should average in any given week.

      pts 856
      reb 303
      ast 184
      stl 58
      blk 26
      to 116
      3pm 37
      fgp 46%
      ftp 80%

And here is what the average team in your league should get in a week

      pts 728
      reb 278
      ast 162
      stl 55
      blk 37
      to 96
      3pm 50
      fgp 47%
      ftp 77%

So, looks like your team is strong in points, rebounds, assists and FT%. Steals and FG% are a toss-up and your weak in blocks, TOs, and threes. I think overall your in a good place and don’t need to do too much. Like Erik said, you could look to move one of your low FG% guys and maybe give up some points for a shot blocker if you wanted. But overall, you are in good shape.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Thanks for the kind words about the blog Emily! We definitely appreciated it. Using a combination of our preseason player projections and the current season stats, here are the total stats your team should average in any given week

      pts 787
      reb 299
      ast 202
      stl 54
      blk 32
      to 110
      3pm 53
      fgp 46%
      ftp 80%

And here is what the average team in your league should get in a week

      pts 737
      reb 290
      ast 163
      stl 57
      blk 38
      to 99
      3pm 50
      fgp 47%
      ftp 77%

Your team is strong is points, assists and FT%. Blocks and TOs are your weakest categories (Josh Smith is your best blocks guy) and the rest seem to be toss-ups. In a daily changes league with 8 teams, I’d drop Young and maybe Odom if you can find better guys on the waiver wire. I’d also consider going either slightly smaller and trying to pick up some threes and steals (with a Carlos Delfino/Jared Dudley type) or slightly bigger and pick up some blocks. It seems like your team is stuck a bit in the middle at the moment.

You can let us know if there are any players on waivers that you might be interested in.

    • Orchix

My league is a daily changes league, where the players lock in daily, i dont have a max games cap, and only 3 bench slots. My current bigs are Horford, Dalembert, Varejao, Blair, and Bynum. Would my current group of big men be able to provide the needed stats until Randolph returns?

    • chris

hey great blog! already saw this late last season although I only get to follow your blogs this season. one reason is I’m currently involved in 7 leagues all H2H – daily. All of these leagues are I would say competitive with majority of the GMs are actively “moving”. Your blogs really helped me and the other GMs here to manage our teams in a more “scientific” way. Anyways, here’s the lineup of one of my team. I’m hoping if you could give me some of your thoughts on how to improve it. thanks!

JETIggyKyrie Irving (soon to be replaced by DLee through trade)LBJGayD-JordanMarc GasolNashRubioR-Jefferson (planning on dropping in favor of Humphries thru waiver)

The league is a 12-team 10-player (PG,SG,G,SF,F,PF,C,UTIL,2BN) H2H-daily format. The cats are the default ones (yahoo).

      My questions are:
1.Is dropping Jefferson for Humphries a good move? I reckon I’m short in PF and quite weak in RBS and PTS compared to the other teams within the league.
      2. Any suggestions that can help improve my team?

Looking forward for your thoughts on this one. thanks!

    • Emily

I think I’m going to get rid of Young and grab Delfino….good move?

    • Bb

What the fuck is Dorrel Wrigth doing?!?!?!?!!??!!?!? :/

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

      Good move.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Someone should tell Wright that Eddy Curry called and he wants his game back.

    • http://nelswadycki.com nelswadycki

If this is a daily changes league, I’d say start Dudley first over Wright until Wright figures out that the season has started. The rest of your team looks pretty good (without knowing how many teams are in your league).

    • http://nelswadycki.com nelswadycki

I just meant “right now” because Deron Williams is playing like crap and if he continues to do so, then you lose on that trade.  If we were just looking at pre-season projections, then it’s a fine trade. Al Jefferson is also playing a lot better than Josh Smith right now. If that continues for a week or two, then, again, you will end up losing on the trade.

If both those guys pick up their game right away and start playing as we would expect them to, then it’s a very even trade.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Hey Davo, trust me, I’ve spent years plugging in the wrong guys on the wrong nights – it’s inevitably going to happen when you have a deep team and it’s one of the more frustrating things about daily changes leagues.

So anyway, using a combination of our preseason player projections and the current season stats (and assuming Wright takes a big hit in value this season), here are the total stats your team should average in any given week. Note this assumes you play in a 12 team league.

      pts    763
      reb    283
      ast    152
      stl    47
      blk    28
      to    92
      3pm    65
      fgp    44%
      ftp    84%

And here is what the average team in your league should get in a week

      pts    693
      reb    284
      ast    152
      stl    54
      blk    36
      to    93
      3pm    46
      fgp    46%
      ftp    77%

So you have a bit of an interesting team. No surprise with bigs like Frye, Ryan Anderson and Al Harrington, you should be destroying teams in threes every week. Looks like your also strong in points and FT%. Rebounds, assists and TOs are your toss-up categories. You don’t really have any big weaknesses, although you are slightly below average in steals, blocks and FG%. Given your strength in threes, Stuckey is probably the best fit out of the three to play on a nightly basis. Dudley is the most redundant with your strengths. Given your situation, I’d definitely look to move one of your three point shooters for anything in your weaker categories – maybe a rebounding/blocking big or an assist/steals guard.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I’m actually in the same situation with Randolph in one daily changes league with 3 bench spots. I’m leaning towards keeping Randolph for now and seeing if I can survive. Plus, you seem to be in a better spot with Horford/Bynum/Varejao/Blair. Provided another one of your bigs doesn’t get hurt (looking in Bynum’s direction) you should be ok until Randolph gets back.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Glad you like the blog Chris! And glad we can help you out even a little in your leagues. Ok, so like I’ve been doing with other people, here are about what your average weekly stats should look like using a combination of our preseason player projections and the current season stats (assuming you’ve got David Lee and a rejuvinated Richard Jefferson).

      pts    578
      reb    215
      ast    166
      stl    41
      blk    33
      to    91
      3pm    36
      fgp    50%
      ftp    72%

And here is what the average team in your league should get in a week

      pts    551
      reb    220
      ast    122
      stl    42
      blk    28
      to    74
      3pm    37
      fgp    47%
      ftp    77%

As you can see, you’re strong in assists, blocks and FG%, weak in FT% and everything else is pretty much a toss-up at the moment. So while you are not strong in points and boards, you do ok with Lee on the team.

If you swap out Jefferson for Humphries, you’d look something more like this

      pts    562
      reb    246
      ast    168
      stl    41
      blk    36

You’d lose a few points and a lot of threes to gain a sizeable increase in boards and some blocks. I don’t think it’s a bad move at all to try and lock up some of those big man categories, so a Humphries pickup makes sense in my book. You’ll probably lose FT%, threes and maybe TOs more often than not, but you’ll have a good change to win assists, boards, blocks, and FG% every week. Overall, I think you’ve done a really good job with your moves and the only thing I’d look for is to add a threes/steal guy off your bench if you hve that luxury.

Those bigs are very good and in a normal league (weekly changes) they’d be more than enough to hold you over… But with daily changes, the problem is that you will lose probably 4 games a week versus any opponents who remember to change their lineups every day. The problem with that though (it’s like an Inception problem within a problem) is that Zach Randolph is probably better than anyone you can pick up, even in a 10-team league.

I guess I would say to hold on for a week and see how it goes. If you find that the other guys are remembering to set their lineups every day and you’re losing Points and Rebounds (the only categories where Randolph really contributes), then I would look for the best available Free Agent. I wouldn’t look specifically at Randolph’s replacements since there will probably be better guys available since you’re only in a 10-team league.

He must think it’s still just the pre-season.

Humphries is injured right now, so definitely wait until he gets back to pick him up. Meanwhile, RJ seems to have come back a bit this year, with some new 3-point shooting. He’s going to give you Points and a bit of rebounds, and if he makes 2-3 threes a game, he’s not a bad fantasy player. (#69 on the player rater right now)

I LOVE that you reply to these questions & your blog is the no.1 place I check every night. Thanks so much.

I’m in a 10 team H2H league (no TO) & your analysis is spot on (not sure if it changes much with the 10 team vs 12 team).
FT% & 3′s  are strong, Pts, Reb, Assists, steals are 50/50, and FG% and Blocks are hurting.
Im all about finding that rebounding/blocking guy but will have to decide who Im willing to let go.

Ive thrown Wright, Frye, Stuckey & Dudley out there as on the block. Hoping somone is positive on Wright turning it around and considers a bundle trade. Although I think I may have to dangle someone else who Im loving now to get a big rebounder/block guy.

      Keep up the great work.
