And by Titans, I mean the really tall guys who play Center

While Zeus himself Dwight Howard‘s (1.86) 45 points, 23 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks were probably more useful to fantasy owners who have already given up on their Free Throw Percentage (he made only 21 of his NBA record setting 39 free throws), that very free throw percentage kept him from securing the best line of the night, despite having 40 and 20 for the first time since Shaq did it in 2003. It was another big man whose team lost and who gets no flashy headlines that the Player Rater favored on Mt. Olympus last night… (Can you tell I’ve never seen Clash of the Titans and haven’t studied mythology since high school? No? Good, carry on.)

Line of the Night: Greg Monroe (3.17) scored 32 points with not just terrific FG shooting (12-16 from the field) but he was also a perfect 8-8 from the line, to go along with 16 rebounds, and 2 steals.

Honorable Mentions:
Stephen Jackson (1.84) had a nice game with 25 points (3 threes, 4-4 from the line), 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Carlos Delfino (1.82) did that thing he does where he gets some nice defensive numbers and threes and makes you think that maybe, just maybe, he’s worth starting. Look at the 9 points, though, and try to see through the mirage of 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Monta Ellis (1.71) continued to score and dish in Stephen Curry’s absence with 30 points (3 threes), and 11 assists. Brandon Jennings (1.55) continue his 2-on-2-off method of preserving his energy with 27 points via 3 threes, 9-15 from the field, and 6-6 from the line.

Then there’s Joe Johnson (1.54), who had arguably his best game so far this year, and who, with the other Hawks, picked up the slack for the injured Al Horford, soaring to a 30 point win. JJ had 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists, which leads us to…

Injury of the Night: Al Horford tore his pectoral muscle on the 11th, and as we all found out yesterday, he’ll be out for 3 months. The Hawks are talking about hopefully getting him back for the playoffs, and when teams talk like that, they really mean he’s done as a fantasy player this year. Replace him with whoever you can find while he rehabs and let’s the newly crowned Mrs. Al Horford (Amelia Vega) do all the work (I mean, housework of course).

Since the Hawks backup is the perennially mediocre Zaza Pachulia, there is talk that they might try to trade for a replacement big man. Even if Zaza does get the starting gig long term, I wouldn’t count on him to produce anything worthy of a 12 team league. If you don’t want to take my word for it, Patrick did some of his fancy math and projected Pachulia in the 150-160 range for the season. Sure he had 10 and 10 last night, but note that it was against a lineup that would probably get dominated by Mrs. Horford (who is a former Miss Universe and stands at a runway model height of 6′ 1″ – nearly tall enough to make Boris Diaw look average).

It will most likely be the other Hawks who benefit most from Horford’s injury. For example, look at Joe Johnson’s line from last night. He might end up as one of the best value picks of the fantasy season if he gets back to the old Joe Johnson type numbers.

Yes, since Al and Amelia (Almelia?) got married on the eve of the season, I’ve been waiting for something big to happen with Al Horford so I could throw up some traffic-attracting (and crowd-pleasing) pics. I was hoping it would be Big Al going for 45 and 23 and certainly not wanting the incident to be a season-ending injury, but I’m trying to make a lime margarita out of these lemons. I don’t think it’s going to work, but I’m going to keep trying, because I had one of those Jose Cuervo Margaritas On Tap last night at the Blackhawks game and man I love the potency and drinkability of those things.

Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Evidently there is someone in the league named Jon Leuer (1.67). I’m sure a lot of people were saying the same thing yesterday when they saw some guy named John Lucas put up a near triple-double. Well, this other Jon’s 15 points (6-9 from the field), 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks are not quite as impressive, but he did start his first game for the Bucks and has put up three pretty nice games out of his last three. He’s still only 4% owned, probably thanks to the fact that he plays in Milwaukee. Take a look if you need a big man, especially one who appears to be good at free throws. Perhaps he’ll be clashing with the titans soon enough…

Pick Up Lines: As the Knicks wait for Baron Davis to finish his next movie, they’re struggling to find a guard rotation that works, and in the mean time, Bill Walker (1.55) played 21 minutes and was very efficient in scoring 14 points (4 threes, 5-8 from the field) (1% owned). With Toney Douglas slipping out of favor and Landry Fields very much on the bubble, Walker might make a good speculative add in deep leagues. Once Davis is back, though, he and Shumpert will probably lock down most of the minutes at Guard for New York.

I had picked up Markieff Morris (1.09) for my small ball team, but I had to give him up for Chandler Parsons because Patrick said so. Nevertheless, if Parsons has already been snatched up, look at Morris, who had 13 points and 8 rebounds and has only shown up on the radar for 28% of fantasy owners.

Klay Thompson (0.91) showed some of his potential with 14 points (4 threes, 5-8 from the field) (3% owned), but I’d leave him be for now. After this short season is over, he’ll have a good long time to practice and be a worthy fantasy player next year.

The youth are kind of starting to take over in Detroit. What with Greg Monroe getting Line of the Night and Brandon Knight (0.91) scoring 20 points on 7-9 from the field, and 4-4 from the line. He’s up to 39% owned, and as long as Rodney Stuckey is out, that number will probably continue to rise.

Biggest Loser: Further proof that Detroit needs to start trading for more draft picks: Ben Gordon (-0.98) had 9 points, 1 rebound, and 4 assists while shooting only 3-14 from the field. But since Gordon is only 66% owned, let’s go to the next guy on the list, who happens to be 100% owned: Amar’e Stoudemire (-0.80). Amar’e scored only 6 points on 1-7 from the field (adding 3 rebounds and 1 assist), leading Yahoo to feature Bill Walker as the top performer for the Knicks in their box score. It didn’t help the Knicks that Toney Douglas (-0.55) was 3-13 for 8 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Then there’s Boris Diaw (-0.29), who I bring up for two reasons: 1) One of the guys in my work league is starting him this week and after his last two games (which included last night’s 0 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 turnovers), I’m looking forward to saying “How you feel about Diaw niaw?” and 2) because Patrick said (once upon a time) that he makes DeSagna Diop look like a runway model and I figure that’s a good lead in to the gallery… (and that’s what we in the business refer to as a “callback”).

after getting hit by injuries… again (lost randolph for a while, and lost horford for season), and picking up scrubs, my roster looks like this:

PG: Teague, Shumpert, Lowry, Augustin, Conley
SG: J Johnson, Evans, Nate Robinson
    SF: Melo
    PF: Thomas, Haslem
    C: Varejao, Bynum, Blair, Perkins

I’m thinking of trading Lowry/Augustin or Melo/Augustin for Gallo/Aldridge. I just want to get rid of my abundance of pgs to get some quality bigs/wings. any thoughts on what i should do next?

  • Orchix

btw this is a 10 man, 15 player league, with double doubles as a category. other categories are std, no tos though.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I do not have an easy way to calculate double-doubles, but here is what the rest of the stats look like for your current team on a weekly basis.

    pts 702
    reb 271
    ast 191
    stl 63
    blk 30
    3pm 40
    fgp 44%
    ftp 77%

And here is what the average team in your league looks like:

    pts 687
    reb 275
    ast 150
    stl 55
    blk 34
    3pm 44
    fgp 46%
    ftp 76%

So, all things considered with your injuries, you seem to be holding up pretty well. You still have advantages in points, assists, steals and FT%. Not surprisingly, you are weak in the big man stats with those injuries.

With double-doubles as a category, that lends itself to going big since most DDs are of the points/boards variety. And while from a pure value basis, a Lowry/Augustin trade for Gallo/Aldridge is the best get for you since Melo > Lowry, it would possibly leave you short on assists since you’d be dealing your two best assist men. I like the trade, you may just have to make one additional move to get another assist guy on your team after that. Working Melo into the deal is a decent deal for Gallo/Aldridge and ultimately could be a better fit with your team.

I do think we DDs as a cat, you should keep trying to get big again and look for those guys like Aldridge again. Good luck.

Time to cut bait with Dudley? I had high hopes for him this season, drafting him in the 8th round and he’s been very disappointing. Also dealing with injuries at SG with Gordon and Thornton missing games. Would you recommend picking up Nate, Sessions, Barnes, or Crawford at this point?

  • Orchix

Thanks for the advice, I am currently exploring trades, and one of the offers that popped up was Lowry for Monroe/Blatche. Now I like Monroe, but not so much Blatche, but which big men do you think would be considered equal value for Lowry?

  • Velvet

Hi GMTR, just want some advice. Who should I play tonight David West or Amir Johnson for more boards/blocks? I’m leaning towards Amir because bargnani seems to be day to day? Thanks!

  • Eugene Cha

uggh. manu, kidd, and now horford. i’m screwed. any other recs for horford besides markieff and parsons?

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I like Monroe a lot more than Blatche given his pluses in points, boards, percentages and his… erm… conditioning. Lowry is playing great so far this season, but Monroe would at least be closer to equal value to him than Blatche.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I would not trade Lowry for Blatche straight-up.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Sounds like Bargs is doubtful for tonight, so yeah, I could see starting Johnson over West. Of course, I’ll let you know that I always make the wrong decision on who to start.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I’m not going to defend Dudley any more at this point. Given
an opportunity to start this season, he’s been frustratingly inconsistent. Out
of the players you mentioned, I like Nate Rob the best as long as Curry is out.
As a bonus, the Warriors still have 2 games this week (Sat and Sun) allowing to
    maximize those games.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Ummm…. Byron Mullens? Andris Biedrins? Jon Leuer?

    Yeah, it’s not pretty.

  • slick

14 team h2h 9cat..blatche just tweeted no good news from doctor visit today..smh..should i drop him and go for trevor booker his handcuff b4 somebody gets him????

  • Orchix

oh I meant Monroe and Blatche in the inital offer. What other big men would be considered equal value for Lowry?

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Oh yeah, that would be great if you can get it then. As far as other big men I like in that range? Tyson Chandler, JaVale McGee, Marcin Gortat. Even DeMarcus Cousins is playing pretty well right now and I’d prefer him to someone like Blatche.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

It’s a good idea to pick up Booker if you can, but I would not drop Blatche to get him yet. Sounds like the injury could be bad news for Blatche, but we just don’t know at the moment. I’d hate to have you drop him if he ends up only missing another game or two.

  • slick

Would booker for beasley or pachulia be better

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

    Personally, I’d drop Beasley.

  • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

From a commenter below, Blatche tweeted this: https://twitter.com/#!/drayblatche/status/157886959660969985

“No good news from the shoulder doc smh”

Might want to hold off on trading for him… Especially with Lowry.

  • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

This is my new favorite twitter account: https://twitter.com/#!/FakeDrayBlatche

  • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Yeah, Dudley is done for now. I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes back and has another hot streak at some point, though.

  • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Yeah, didn’t you say Boozer over Scola last time? Good thing you don’t play any of those daily fantasy basketball games.

  • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

I want to make one of those for Carlos Boozer now, but it would just consist of varying lengths of “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA”

  • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Then the fake Carlos Boozer and the fake Joakim Noah would tweet each other, but it would just be “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA” back and forth.

  • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

    I concur.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

    Just an awesome twitter account:

“I injured my passing shoulder MT @MrMichaelLee: Um Blatche’s shoulder looks fine to me. Hasn’t stopped him from taking 6 shots in 8 mins”

“Gonna make those boos seem like they’re cheers for me by changing my name to Lou Blatche”

  • slick

Fellas,I got word from my cousin who lives in washington and a local beat writer was on the radio saying blatche possibly out for the year..imma drop him for booker and drop beasley for baron i think

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

I would not trade Lowry. Period. Unless it’s for D-Rose or CP3

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

    I DROPPED Beasley last week…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JOSOGRBKE7LDC7MRBIH6JW4L2U Edwin

GMTR nation, this is or should I say these are my 2 teams, H2H points, 1 10 team one 12. And I’m always looking to improve them both. I can seem to get a decent trade in either league, so it’s whatever is available on the WW for now. Anyway, can you tell me where I can perhaps get better, what type of player/players I should try to get?

    team 1
Guards: Deron, Westbrook, Shumert, Salmons, Brooks,
Forwards: Stephen Jackson, Harden, Landry, Ibaka, Deng, Harrington, De Andre
    Centers: Chandler, Gortat

    Team 2:
    Harding, Irving, Matthews, Teague
Melo, Deng, West, Griffin, Amir, Marvin Williams
    Chandler, Cousins, Marc Gasol.

Any suggestions? I know I want to get rid of Salmons, perhaps Jackson, so I’ll probably drop both of them to make changes. So what say you?

  • Joe

    start parsons or hansbrough tonight?

  • David

I say parsons, Kings d is non existant, and raps d has been decent in the paint area. also parsons will see more minutes as a starter.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

    I agree with David.

  • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

I would have also said Parsons, but it’s too late now since the Indiana game has already started.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Hey Edwin, you said you play in points leagues? Is it standard scoring where assists are +2 and everything else is worth 1? and which one of those teams is in the 10 team league and which is in the 12?

  • Zee

Do you think Anderson Varejao aka Sideshow Bob will maintain his 1.8 steals average? He’s never averaged even 1.0 in his career but right now, I think his value is pretty high with ~11 rebounds a night on top of the elite steals.

  • Zee

Also some guy dropped Jason Kidd in my league, should I drop Batum to pick him up?

  • Xragnarokswordx12

    i had an offer
my mullens for his al harrington

i lost al horford and i have ty lawson, d-wade, bargnani and noah as injury concerns.

Im low on 3pts and low on FT%
i used to be lower in assists but im getting better with 2pg on my lineup to 4: lawson, felton, shumpert, collison.

    thanks in advanced!

  • Xragnarokswordx12

10 team 10cat league (no TO but Team Wins) 3UTIL slots

    PG: Lawson, Felton, Collison, Shumpert
    SG: D-wadeSF: iggy
    PF: Gasol, Monroe, Millsap, Frye.
    C: Noah, Mullens

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Yes, as unconventional as Kidd’s line is, he’ll have much more value than Batum this season, who is not getting the minutes off the Portland bench to really breakout in any way.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

It’s very unlikely. Steals are one of those stats that don’t really improve or decline much from the moment a player enters the league. Case in point is Varejao, who has averaged between 0.7 and 0.9 steals a game for his entire career. I’d be very surprised he if ends the year with more than a steal a game.

  • Davo

Im considering mixing stuff up a bit, and please take this as the laugh-fest I hope it to be, but in honour of Billy Hoyle, I want to try my theory that even though White Men cant Jump, they could win you a fantasy league.

Ive put my team up a couple of times and had awesome advice, but please humour me here & tell me if
    a) There could be enough stat generation to win, &
    b) Is there any way I can get some of the trades necessary across the line.

    So,
    Rose
    Harden
    Wright
    Nowitzki (1)
    Cousins
    Holiday
    Bosh
    Anderson (2)
    Jordan
    Noah

    Parsons (3)
    Dudley
    Mullens (4)

In my ridiculous (surely done before, but hey) plan Becomes,
    Nash
    Delfino
    Gallinari
    Nowitz
    Pau Gasol
    Calderon
    Mac Gasol
    Love
    Anderson
    Rubio

    Parsons
    Mullens
    Gortat

    So, what do you think?
    Do-able??

    I see Rose -> Love, Maybe Bosh -> a Gasol, Harden – Gallinari, Holiday -> Rubio/Nash/Calderon if I can do a sell.
Cousins, Wright, Noah, Jordan, Dudley could be tougher sells but……………you never know if you never go.

  • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

That trade is definitely a net positive in your favor, although it won’t help you in FT%. It will net you about 5 more threes per week (1.2 x 4), so if that’s enough to make a difference in your matchups, then you win there. It will probably also help you in Team Wins (assuming that means if the team the player is on wins the game, which seems to defeat the whole purpose of fantasy basketball to me, but I’ve played with Technical Fouls a few times and sometimes those extra categories make it a little more fun; I bet Derrick Rose is KILLING!)

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

You have team wins as a category? That’s the first I’ve heard of that one. That certainly hurts Mullens’ value going forward.

I don’t really have a way to take team wins into account, but based on the other categories Harrington is ranked at 75 on the season, 93 over the past 2 weeks and 135 over the past week. You can see the trend in the wrong direction and why Harrington’s owner wants to unload him.

If we only look at Mullen’s last three games (where he has really started to get minutes) then he comes out ranked at 102. His long term value is probably a bit lower than that and once you take team wins into account a Harrington/Mullens trade is probably about equal in overall value.

I would not be jumping up and down about the trade (and there are probably better sources of threes out there than Harrington), but one of the fun things about wacky categories is the ability to sneakily win them because people aren’t use to thinking about team wins as a category they need to win. So it might be a good idea to trade Mullens, but he’s hot right now so I’d even try to aim a little higher than Harrington.

  • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I think the toughest part of that scheme would be to find a way to get Love and Pau Gasol while keeping Dirk. Not sure who after Rose you’d have to make that happen. But, in terms of how well that team would do against the first, here is what the original team looks like on a weekly basis:

    pts 720
    reb 302
    ast 121
    stl 46
    blk 41
    to 90
    3pm 46
    fgp 46%
    ftp 79%

And here is what the all white team looks like:

    pts 714
    reb 325
    ast 175
    stl 47
    blk 34
    to 90
    3pm 48
    fgp 48%
    ftp 81%

Of course, you’re grabbing all white guys who happen to be playing well this season, so that helps. But with 3 premier assist men in Nash, Rubio and Calderon, you’d be killing it in assists. And with all those big men, the rebounding would be great. Of course, we all know that white men CAN’T jump, so your blocks would actually go down.

  • Davo

IT may have to be Bogut instead of P Gasol.
Thanks for the follow up. I actually really like those improvements, although slight, it would be fun.
I’ll let you know if I have any luck.
