or: Two Guys Named C.J. walk into a bar

First Things First: If you are a US resident, please go to Wikipedia or Google and read the message there about the legislation that the US Senate and Congress are considering. Then please write to your Congressman/woman and Senator regarding SOPA and PIPA. As someone who works in the world of web development, this issue directly affects me, and obviously, it directly affects the people who run Google and Wikipedia, and anyone else who runs a web site. If this legislation had been in place 10 years ago, it’s possible that sites like YouTube, Reddit, Wikipedia, and even Facebook and Give Me The Rock would have been blocked, preventing anyone in the US from ever seeing them.

Line of the Night/Waiver Wire Line of the Night: C.J. Watson (2.47) filled in for the injured Derrick Rose with 23 points (3 threes, 8-12 from the field, 4-4 from the line), 5 assists, and 2 steals. You may recall someone else filling in for Derrick Rose not too long ago. Well, that’s because C.J. Watson was also injured. Now that Watson is back, John Lucas played only 14 minutes, and that’s in a game where the Bulls led by 20 points at the half. So while Lucas may be shoved back in the rotation, Watson actually looks like a pretty decent play as long as Rose is out.

    Honorable Mentions:
Brandon Jennings owners are in luck! Jennings (2.34) played a bad game on the 16th, so of course you knew he was going to do something like 30 points (3 threes), 6 assists, and 3 steals. Expect another 1-2 games like that before he takes the night off again.

Chris Bosh (2.01) is kind of playing this year like everyone expected him to last year. After scoring 30 points (14-22 from the field), with 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals, Bosh is dialed in at #26 for the year.

In addition to C.J. Watson, Carlos Boozer (1.86) also stepped up for the Bulls. Boozer had a season-high 31 points (14-21 from the field), to go with 6 rebounds, and 2 steals.

Dwight Howard (1.71) makes the list partly because he only shot 8 free throws while scoring 25 points (he was 11-18 from the field), grabbing 17 rebounds, dishing 4 assists, blocking 4 shots. At this point, I though I would be bored talking about Howard’s free throw shooting (he made 3 of 8), but I did find myself quite enthusiastic when explaining to a co-worker that it didn’t matter if all his other players made 100% of their free throws because combined they attempted barely more free throws per game than Howard, so the best he could hope to do was mediocre in FT%. I didn’t tell him what to do, though, because I’m playing him next week and I’ve got Derrick Rose, Stephen Curry, and Andrea Bargnani on my team there, so I need every advantage I can get.

Paul Millsap (1.53) has himself up to #16 on the Player Rater (take that Chris Bosh!) with another 20 points (7-11 from the field, 6-6 from the line), 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. He’s got a very nice season going, but I would consider selling high on him if I had him in any of my leagues.

I would not, however, sell LeBron James (1.53) for pretty much anything. Maybe, like, a lifetime supply of Cool Ranch Doritos. So, even though LeBron’s teammate (see below, it’s not Dwyane Wade) is now #1 on the Player Rater, James threw up another 33 points (and finally made some [some = 4] threes), with 5 rebounds, and 10 assists.

    ***

Pick Up Lines: Anyone who can make threes can impress the Player Rater. And Mike Miller (1.84) is one of those people. He had 18 points on 6 threes, which if you do the math, means he did not make another shot. Of course, it also means he is 100% from the field. And since he didn’t attempt a free throw, and didn’t turn the ball over, he is now #1 on the Player Rater, head of Lebron, Kyle Lowry, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul. And the Heat don’t play again until Thursday, so he might actually be there for more than a day. Miller is only 6% owned, so you could get this fantasy beast on your team for the cost of maybe a James Johnson. Really, though… My guess is that he’ll make a few threes a game while playing back into the rotation, and definitely he’s worth and add if you need some three-point help.

There’s only two guys in the NBA named C.J. and they both had nice games last night. Besides the aforementioned Watson, C.J. Miles (1.82) had 19 points (4-4 from the line), 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. He is 42% owned, so not great odds that he’s still available in your league, though.

There’s only one guy in the NBA named Bismack, and evidently, the Bobcats need for big men is so strong that they decided to give Bismack Biyombo (1.50) 21 minutes last night. And in those 21 minutes, Biyombo had 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks (2% owned). Now, he’s not going to shoot 100% from the floor every night, but his 50% shooting from the line certainly seems like a possibility (actually, he’s shooting exactly the same percentage – 47.1 – right now from both the field and the stripe; I wonder how often that has ever happened). But anyway, who cares about then when there’s 10 rebounds and 4 blocks at stake. I really want to say hold off on adding him until he plays at least one more game over 20 minutes, but he had 5 blocks in only 12 minutes against the Pistons, so I’m debating with myself about making him a speculative add for all my Big Ball teams.

Corey Brewer (1.45) came off the bench for a season-high 34 minutes against Milwaukee last night and used it to his advantage for 22 points (3 threes), and 2 steals (2% owned). I am definitely going to wait for at least 2 more games like that before I add Brewer. Just imagine your friend bringing over some skanky looking girl that he just had a one night stand with and announcing they’re engaged.

Robin Lopez (1.14) had his first big game of the year, but his 16 points (6-7 from the field, 4-4 from the line), and 6 rebounds (4% owned) came in only 17 minutes, so I doubt those sums will be repeated unless he starts stealing more of Channing Frye’s minutes (which, with the way Frye is playing is not all that unlikely).

Nate Robinson (1.12) continues to thrive (as much as Nate Robinson can really thrive) in Stephen Curry’s absence. Last night he went for 17 points (3 threes), with 10 assists, and 2 steals and he’s now up to 30% owned. I’m starting him this week in place of the injured Curry in one league, and just because in another. And I love that I can say that with no recrimination here, because anywhere else, anyone would say “But Nate Robinson sucks” and I’d have to say “Not right now he doesn’t” and they still wouldn’t get it. But you, dear reader, you get me.

Biggest Loser: Stephen Jackson (-1.16) is still owned in 85% of leagues, which means there’s probably 35% of people who aren’t paying attention and another 50% who are hoping he can get back to those double-digit scoring games he had just a week ago. But seriously, 2 points on 2-2 from the line while going 0-6 from the field with a single assist. Ouch.

Hey I need some advice again, and you guys have been great. I am currently being offered a trade of Conley for Hawes straight up, and I wanted to see what the impacts of it would be. I am currently running with mainly a small ball team in a 9 cat league, with dds replacing tos. My current roster is:

      PG: Teague, Shumpert, Conley, Lowry
      SG: Evans, J Johnson, Robinson
      SF: Parsons, G Wallace, Anthony
      PF: Blair, Haslem
      C: Bynum, Dalembert, Varejao

Im wondering how a Conley for Hawes trade would affect my team overall, as right now I am focusing on winning in assists, steals, ft%, and im not doing bad in rebounding or blocks.

    • BradM

Finally pulled the trigger on Baron Davis after reading this article:

      http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/18/sports/basketball/knicks-to-face-suns-and-steve-nash-the-point-guard-they-are-lacking.html?_r=1

I am a risk-taker in fantasy football and it has served me well for the most part so I figured what the hell.  I’m not extremely impressed with Barnes, he seems like ”just a guy” to me.  I think I can replace him off the WW if Davis doesn’t work out.   On the other hand Davis may be a guy who can help me win a championship this year – I’m comfortable taking a chance on acquiring that much value for free.  Fingers crossed

whats up guys 14 team h2h 9 cat daily changes..picked up mike miller which makes marvin williams more expendable..should i drop marvin and pick up biyombo

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Seems like a good move to me.

    • Reader and Fan: Mr. Yang

I just wanted to do a double check here to see if I convinced my leaguemate to make a good trade. 14 team H2H 9 Category league.

He traded Paul Millsap, Hedo Turkoglu, and Wesley Matthews

      for

Rudy Gay, Serge Ibaka, Kemba Walker

    • Kay

If both of the C.J.’s are open in my league, which one would you recommend I pick up? Or Anthony Morrow is on our WW…

    • Kllycrw

Or should I go ahead and pick up Gustavo Ayon, he’s been doing alright too. I could afford to drop two players I’m not too attached to so I’m pretty open.

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

I’d say Ayon and Morrow are the best two of that bunch. Though Morrow’s most recent game is a little worrisome. CJ Watson only has value while Derrick Rose is out, so Ayon and Morrow are better long term picks. I’d take CJ Miles ahead of Watson as well, but I don’t think he has as much potential as Ayon or Morrow.

Who are you dropping for them?

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Assuming standard categories and using this year’s stats so far, that’s not a great trade. He gains a ton in blocks and a little bit in rebounds, but loses in every other category. Because Gay and Walker are shooting so poorly this year, they more than negate Ibaka’s high FG%, and none of those three are shooting free throws well so far. Even with Ibaka at less than 1 TO, his overall turnovers have increased slightly while also losing points, threes, assists, and a little bit of steals.

Of course, I realize he was probably trying to sell high on Millsap and Matthews (and Turkoglu) and buy low on Gay (and hope that Walker keeps it up through his rookie season). That said, Gay’s FT% should come up, and hopefully his other stats do as well, and Matthews is looking like he’s going to cool off a bit recently. If you only look at the last 2 weeks of stats, the trade gets slightly closer, but still only positive in 2 categories. If Matthews continues to drop and Millsap dips a bit as well, then you probably come out about even at the end of the season.

There’s definitely more potential with the guys that he got, but the risk is whether Ibaka and Walker (IbakaWalka) can deliver on that potential.

    • Kay

Ahhhh, now I’m not sure. I keep going back and forth. Here is my line up:

      L. James
      A. Miller
      T. Evans
      C. Parsons
      S. Hawes
      K. Martin
      A. Harrington
      D. Cousins
      J. Leuer
      L. Scola
      A. Bogut
      M. Barnes
      L. Barbosa

I’m in a H2H points league… but now I’m not sure if I would really trade. This is my first league so I am probably just be over thinking everything. Thanks for all your help!

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

That’s a pretty even trade, and while Hawes’s stats for the season are better, he hasn’t been quite as good after straining his back. You’d mainly gain in the Big Ball categories + Double Doubles with Hawes – though Conley still has the edge in Points. Given that you already have a bunch of big men with bad FT%s, I’d stick with Conley since he matches up with the categories that Lowry is dominating and since Lowry is your best player, I’d say go with that.

    • David

Is teague and j-smoove ever going to improve on their free throw? and would you sell high on them right now? Or are they going to keep producing without al horford in the lineup?

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Smith is a career 67% shooter, so it might get better than it is right now, but that’s probably his max. I would expect Teague to come up to closer to 80%.

If I had either of them, I’d be holding tight like they were fistfuls of money. Unless ATL makes a trade or something, I’d expect good numbers from them for the rest of the season.

Waiting a bit on Correy Brewer is probably fair but George Karl seems to be falling in at least infatuation w/ the kid.  Said in the Denver Post this a.m. that he always knew Brewer was athletic but underestimated his basketball IQ.  In the short-run, Brewer will pick up minutes from Rudy Fernandez who’s dealing with an Achilles but longer term, Rudy and/or AAA (Average Aaron Afflalo) could see reduced minutes at C-Brew’s expense.  He’ll likely be inconsistent but think the arrow is trending up on this one and by mid-February, Brewer could be in the starting line-up or more likely their 6th man.

    • Anonymous

Like to get your take on a comparison question.  Given both have warts and neither is a stud, would you prefer to own Hawes or Dalembert over the long term this season?  Both seem to be getting minutes and playing well with little or no competition for minutes on their respective rosters.  Hawes is slightly better re: boards and dimes so far but both reside inside the top 50 on the Player Rater.  Thanks.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Hawes is also dealing with an Achillies’ strain at the moment, and is currently day-to-day with this new injury. I’d be slightly worried about his ability to make it through this season healthy.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

And of course after you read this too…

      http://givemetherock.com/2012/01/18/what-to-expect-from-baron-davis-on-the-knicks/

      Right?

      Right…

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Biyombo is currently averaging a foul every 6 minutes on the court, so I’m a little dubious of his ability to get consistent minutes and put up consistent numbers. That being said, you’ve got to love the upside (of which Marvin Williams has none) and
Biyombo is averaging 1.5 blocks in only 12 minutes a game. He’s worth a shot and Williams will certainly be waiting there on the wire for you if you ever need to go back.

    • Jim

I’m about 2.2 SDs above the mean in rebounds, so I’m looking to trade Varejao. Could you rank these targets? Brand, Batum, George. I want to improve my %s, blocks, assists, and/or 3s. Any other names would be helpful, if you have any ideas.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

You know, my first instinct was to say Hawes all the way, but then I took a second look at Dalembert’s game long. He’s been putting up some monster games recently and is seeing a fairy consistent 30 minutes a game. On the flip side, Hawes has been dealing with a couple injuries recently and has seen his minutes bounce around because of that. Based on what I see today, I’m going with Dalembert. How about you?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

A lot of it is going to depend on the specific points allocation of your league, but Jon Leuer can probably be dropped at this point. As Nels said, Morrow will likely have the most value going forward out of the guys you mentioned (although he lost his starting job in the Nets last game, so watch that) with Ayon as a possible sleeper candidate.

C.J. Watsons’ value will only last as long as Rose it out, while Miles’ got some extra run in the Jazz game because it was a blowout.

    • T’dUP

Hey guys, I really appreciate your dedication to GMTR.  It is by far the best fantasy basketball site on the net.
I’m hoping to get your opinion on a possible trade in a standard 12 team 9 cat H2H day change league.

      Give: D Williams, Gasol, McGee
      Receive: Lowry, Aldridge, Dalembert

      Here’s my team;
      PG Deron Williams, Rondo, Stuckey
      SG Harden
      SF Batum, Delfino, Dudley
PF Millsap, Pau Gasol, Amir Johnson
      C McGee, Hawes, Noah

I like moving McGee because I’m overkill on blocks and boards, and kind of feel like I’m selling low for overachieving players.  What do you think?

    • Anonymous

Have to say I think you’re right.  Absent the injuries, Hawes seems like the preference but there’s the rub:  You wonder if the back and Achilles end up degrading him a bit…say he over-rotates coming back and tweaks something else.  Interestingly, 76ers and Rockets each have 52 games left, however, Philly plays 16 vs. upper echelon defenses (for the sake of an argument, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, Lakers, Memphis, Spurs).  Houston plays those teams 11 times which strikes me as a big difference in terms of strength of schedule that favors Dalembert.  Good stuff, thanks for the follow-on!

    • Anonymous

Inadvertently left out OKC from my top D list but counted them re: the schedules.

    • Davo

Thoughts on this trade guys – Anderson for Rubio.

I’m solid in 3′s and uncompetitive in assists. This will give him a definite point in 3′s every week and bring me back into the assist mix.

    • Pvpdoorman02

I’m Trading CP3 for K. Love, I’m punting AST as most of my players lack AST and would like to focus on 3′s STL REB and Block.

      My Players for 3′s are:
      D. Wright
      R. Anderson
      J. Dudley
      D. Granger

      REB:
      Gortat
      Duncan
      Wallace
      Deng
      T. Chandler

Which Players can I target that would give me 3s, STL, REB, BLKs?

      My Line up:
Chris PaulDorell Wright Louis Williams Danny Granger Gerald Wallace Tim Duncan Ryan Anderson Marcin Gortat Jared Dudley Tyson Chandler Ramon Sessions Luol Deng Matt Barnes

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

It’s close, but I’d probably rate Batum slightly over Paul, especially with the way he’s been playing recently. Both have similar stats so far this season, but Batum is going to get you slightly more blocks, while George will give you slightly more assists. Either would be good value in a trade for Varejao in my opinion. Brand is playing so badly at the moment I think you’d be overpaying for him with Varejao.

In terms of those cats you mentioned, Kyrie Irving and Hedo Turkoglu are other names that come up near the top of our rater.

    • Jim

Thanks for the advice.  Looks like I have to wait for the results of the tests on Batum’s left eye injury though.

    • Skinzmanlb

Blake Griffin is a frustrating player to own for fantasy basketball purposes. I have Durant and Dirk so I’d like to build my team around the percentages. But nooooo Mr. Griffin is making that impossible. Who are some players to target in a dynasty format that have a high percentage chance of eclipsing Griffin’s fantasy value down the road?

    • Balboran

Would you drop Shumpert at this point with Davis’ return on the horizon? Especially with his set of recent games -.-  I could pick up Okur or Richardson off the ww

Sorry for the first post.(Misclick) This is my real post. First of all props to you guys for a great job. I find myself reading this site at least once a day for my fantasy basketball fix. I’m back again looking for some advice. (14 man h2h weekly 10 man lineup 9 cats) Here is my current lineup:

Derrick RoseDorell WrightJason KiddShawn MarionJosh SmithNicolas BatumChanning FryeUdonis HaslemJames HardenMarkieff MorrisTrevor ArizaChuck HayesAndris Biedrins

Patrick has already advised me to shop D.Rose and I have been trying to and these two deals have been offered to me.

1.) D.Rose+ Dorell Wright for Dirk,R. Felton and Hamilton

2.) D.Rose + J. Smith for Kobe and Deron Williams

Should I consider taking any of these deals and if I do which direction should I go into. Thanks and more power!

9 cat roto. should i drop nate robinson for dorell wright?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

yes. Nate’s value will go down when Curry gets healthy.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

You lose out on #1, Dirk (like his team) has been struggling. #2 is very tempting, but the question is can you afford to lose Josh in the process? My idea would be to pair Rose with a low-end or underperforming guy like Haslem/Biedrins/Frye in exchange for a 2nd or 3rd round value guy + a 7th to 8th round value guy.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

If percentages are your game, and you’re not too fond of peripheral contributions, I am so enjoying Greg Monroe’s game so far. As for him eclipsing Blake, I doubt it, however he does fit your team’s theme better.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

You will be taking an overall loss of value as things stand. Rubio is still blooming while Ryan has just exploded onto the fantasy limelight. But then again, team NEEDS tend to create a tilt in value. So based on your needs they are “closer in value”. The only way to check is if you actually calculate how dominant in 3s your team would be without Anderson (who is clearly that cat’s cornerstone right now). That would be a necessary first step, in my opinion, before moving on.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

I would just like to highlight that you are currently “overkill” in blocks BECAUSE of McGee and Hawes’ initial hot start. Losing Gasol and McGee will bring that cat to more Earthly levels.

I sometimes like to breakdown multi-player trades into their respective “dance partners” then compare.

Aldridge > Gasol = you are up
Dalembert Williams (slightly)  = So you end up with a marginal gain by making this deal.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

Since you’re punting assists you can drop Ramon Sessions for Chandler Parsons, who does a bit of everything.

Shumpert’s biggest asset in fantasy is his steals contributions. Can your team live without those picked pockets? Okur’s value will plummet when Brook Lopez returns. Richardson is just awful and needs to prove that he can be consistent. Hold Shumpert for now.

Like Erik said, the two trades are decent, but I’m not quite sure either works great for you. If I remember correctly, the goal was to trade Rose to get bigger to complete better in boards/blocks. Trade 2 would actually make your team smaller by shipping off Smith. And in trade 1, you’d be paying a lot for the underperforming Dirk.

There is also James Johnson, who took over the starting job from Rasual Butler last night for the Raptors. In was horrible in the game, but as long as he keeps the starting job, he should be a solid board/steal/block contributor.

Other lower end options include Markieff Morris, who recently got the starting job over Channing Frye for the Suns. I also really like Francisco Garcia as long as he keeps seeing 25+ minutes a game. He’s one of the few guys in the league who has potential 1 three/1 steal/1 block potential.

It depends on how badly you need blocks and how much do you believe in Dirk. Based on the way they’ve played so far this year, you’d be gaining about 2.4 blocks per game and losing in everything else, including threes (-2.8 a game), boards (-3.7 a game), points (-2.2 a game), steals (-1 a game) and FT% (-11%).

IF Dirk bounces back to last season’s levels, you’d gain close to 3 points a game and close to an assist, but still lose in threes, steals boards and FT%.

That being said, Dirk logged a lot of minutes last season and is 33 years old. So I can’t say I like this trade at all for you.
