One milestone deserves another. One night after Kemba Walker joined Stephen Jackson and Boris Diaw in being the third rookie to achieve an elusive triple-double, Kobe Bryant surpasses Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most career field goals for the Lakers. Bryant is now also on track this season (91 points behind) to surpass Shaquille O’Neal who is fifth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

On that note, I suppose it’s fitting if not even poetic that this season’s resurgent Kobe Bryant (2.87) comes away with GMTR’s  Line of the Night  with 35 points and 14 boards, that came along with five bombs from downtown and two blocks. While the Lakers’ matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves would have been a showcase battle between two of today’s top power forwards, Pau Gasol and Kevin Love, it was Bryant and his impressive performance that stole the show.

    Honorable Mentions:

It was a night of guards as Chris Paul (2.73) had an almost equally admirable performance against the Denver Nuggets with 25 points (3 threes, 4-4 from the line), six rebounds, seven dimes, and two steals. His owners can rest easy as it looks like his recent injury is behind and he’s ready to get back to playing at 100 percent.

We did mention Kevin Love (2.28) and he didn’t disappoint. Let’s face it. He very rarely does. He outperformed Laker counterpart Pau Gasol (in fantasy) with yet another eye-popping double-double performance to the tune of 33 points and 13 rebounds.

After scaring owners with what was believed to be a tweaked ankle in the last game, Jeff Teague (2.21) opted to dowse any fears by going nine of eleven from the field to tally 24 points. He also added four treys and four dimes. This will give recently returned from injury, Kirk Hinrich more time to get into his back-up PG groove.

It’s time to call it quits (at least for me). No more Chris Bosh (2.20) jokes. Well, uh, not for the remainder of this month at least.  Bosh took care of business for the Heat with 24 points and 12 rebounds. He was sweet from the foul line, making all eight of his shots from the charity stripe.

Technically speaking, Michael Beasley (2.18) deserves a shallow league mention in the “Pick-up lines” section with 18 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. Unfortunately, in spite of his good showing I’m a tad wary to recommend him as a shallow league grab. Let’s let him put together a reasonably consistent string of solid games before we ring the purchase bell.

Chauncey Billups (2.03) was more than a worthy backcourt partner for Chris Paul last night. He was on fire! He torched Denver with 32 points, nailing six treys from beyond the arc.

    ***

Waiver Wire Line of the Night: If you’ve been playing fantasy hoops as long as I have, it would feel weird to you to to call out Vince Carter (1.89) for WWLOTN. Ah but time flies. Vinsanity started at shooting guard and chipped in 21 points and two steals in Dallas’ winning effort against their Texan rivals, the San Antonio Spurs. Carter is owned in 27 percent of Yahoo leagues and is probably worth a spot add for the week (or two) while Jason Kidd is still injured.

Pick Up Lines: Marvin Williams (1.82), while owned in only 26 percent of leagues, showed some promise with his hybrid-big performance last night against the Hornets. He had 14 points (3 threes, 5-8 from the field) and 3 steals. It was against New Orleans’ paper-thin frontcourt so take it with a grain of salt and act accordingly.

George Hill (1.52) is simply one of those guys who just needs minutes in order to be a fantasy-productive asset. He made the most of a slow start by Paul George to finish the night with 16 points (6-9 from the field), six rebounds and four assists. At 43 percent ownership there are enough people who are aware of his status. The other 57 percent know all too well that those said minutes come at sometimes random intervals.

Speaking of inconsistent playing time and performances, Danny Green (1.34) and Gary Neal (1.23) each had good nights as the Spurs spread out the playing time so evenly it rivaled a gourmet-prepared peanut butter sandwich. Both of them played over 25 minutes and wound up sounding off a ping on our fantasy sonar. Green had 12 points and five rebounds with three steals, while Neal had 19 points and seven dimes. Both guys only have 10 percent ownership and are currently stream, cycle, boost (or whatever you want to call it) fodder for now

Rodrigue Beaubois (1.17) now has an opportunity to return to the world of fantasy relevance. He’s been languishing in the depth of the Mavericks’ aging backcourt, but has recently started at the point, thanks in part to injuries to both Jason Kidd and Delonte West. Roddy erupted for 14 points, seven assists, and three blocks. Expect his 23 percent to rise within the coming days as owners scramble to add him and ride his performance during Kidd’s injury-induced hiatus.

    Biggest Loser:

Carl Landry (-1.13) stank things up for the few stubborn owners he still has as he suffered through the chaos of Monty Williams’ straw-grasping rotation. He finished with zero points and four boards.

Kris Humphries (-0.91) joined the fantasy-repulsive side of New Jersey’s roster last night. He had an awful performance, managing to only score a lousy trifecta of points, goind one of four from the field. He managed to snag eight rebounds but the five turnovers he committed easily overshadowed that accomplishment.

It didn’t come too much as a surprise that Danny Green and Gary Neal played so many minutes, when you look at Tony Parker (-0.77) and his mind numbing nine-point, four-assist outing. He made two of eleven shots from the field, which was likely enough for Popps to want to avoid a coronary and limit TP’s minutes.

I just traded Pau for D. Wade straight up. Was this the right move?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I’m going to assume you mean in general rather than specifically tonight since some of those guys don’t have games today.

      1. Denver’s next game is on Tuesday. Lawson was hoping to play over the weekend, but he was a late scratch after going through pre-game workouts. Nothing is ever a sure thing this year in the NBA, but he’s probably a good bet to play on Tuesday.

      2. Definitely Wright the way he’s been playing lately, with George second and Harris a distant third.

      3. Based on your scoring system, Varejao has been the most productive of those players so far this season. Provided he qualifies at F, I’d also start Beaubois as long as Kidd is out. Over the past week, he’s been more productive than any of those guys by a lot. After that, I’d rank them Knight, Brand, Beasley.

      4. DeRozan. Lawson and Teague both benefit from your league’s scoring system since they are PGs. In fact, out of the guys you mentioned, they have been the two most productive of all, beating Anderson Varejao, Wright, George and the rest.

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

I guess Bosh making all his Free Throws was enough to put him ahead of Derrick Rose and LeBron James who both choked big time by missing two free throws apiece at the end of that game. Still, that was some good basketball.

    • http://twitter.com/conradburry Conrad Burry

Thanks, Patrick…I did mean “for this week” instead of tonight only. In further response:

      1. Sounds good.
      2. That was my thought as well.
      3. Unfortunately, Roddy is a G in the league, so I guess I’ll go with Brand?
      4. Yeah, DeRo seems the one to sit (bad matchups as well).

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

With Pau on your team I’ve got you playing big (no surprise) with strengths in boards, blocks and FG%. You’re also strong in assists and steals. Running the YTD numbers, here is the % comparison of your team to the average team in your league.

      pts -4%
      reb 17%
      ast 12%
      stl 15%
      blk 34%
      to 1%
      3pm -20%
      fgp 4%
      ftp -2%

So, I’ve got you as 4% worse than the league average in terms of points per week. I’d say anything of less than 5% give or take is probably a toss-up category. With Wade, this is what you looked like:

      pts -2%
      reb 9%
      ast 19%
      stl 26%
      blk 38%
      to -5%
      3pm -21%
      fgp 2%
      ftp -3%

So the big change with the trade is that you increased you position in boards, TOs and FG% at the cost of some steals and assists. Your team strengths are more or less the same (Wade plays big anyway), but there is also the consideration that Wade is dealing with some nagging injuries this year and has already missed 9 games this year. For the simple fact that the trade takes some risk away from your team, I like it a lot.

    • Chitown

drop shumpert for beaubois, what do you think?  I feel like beaubois has been playing very well and may get to keep the starting job or at least get significant minutes even after kidd comes back

    • Mike

I’m wondering how you would rate this selection of players over the next couple weeks and beyond:
Chandler Parsons, Luke ridnour, cj miles, linas kleiza and roddy beaubois

      Thanks!

    • Aku281

How about Jerryd Bayless? I picked him up and dropped the depressed Jameer Nelson. Bayless puts up some nice stats as a starter, I hope Toronto sticks with him in front of Barbosa to develop his talent because the Raptors are the Raptors.

    • GregSchulz

I just traded Scola for Blatche and that trade couldn’t have been more of a disaster lol. Scola had his best week, and Blatche hurt his shoulder, got benched, and hurt his calf, so I ended up having to drop him. Here’s my team right now (10-Team, 9-Cat. H2H)
      1. LeBron James2. LaMarcus Aldridge3. Josh Smith4. Dorrel Wright5. Samuel Dalembert6. Kemba Walker7. David West8. Paul George9. James Johnson10. Rodney Stuckey(Bn) Anthony Morrow(Bn) Rudy Fernandez(Bn) Jared Dudley(Bn) Marcus Thornton(IR) Manu GinobliHow do you guys feel my team stacks up once Marcus Thornton comes back? Also, who do you feel are the most dropable guys on my team? Normally I would say Fernandez, but he pushed me over in FG% for me to get the win last week so I am inclined to keep him for the moment lol. And I think Morrow should keep on getting minutes now that the Nets are thinking about limiting Brooks’s minutes for the rest of the year. The top free-agents available are O.J. Mayo, Aron Afflalo, Jerryd Bayless, Linas Kleiza, Marvin Williams, Blatche, and Frye. Should I grab any of them?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Yes, I would. Both for the reasons you mentioned and in light of Shumpert being moved to the bench as well as the imminent return of Baron Davis.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I’d personally rate them Ridnour, Beaubois, Miles, Kleiza, Parsons. Parsons has looked like he’s just about hit a wall.
Ridnour is a pretty safe choice for the rest of the season, but Beaubois has the most upside potential and could easily be the best of the bunch come the end of the season. Or he could quietly go back to the bench once Kidd returns. Still, I think we all love upside. Kleiza has always been way too inconsistent for me and will probably see his minutes bounce around in the Raps ever changing rotation.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Erik and I talked about Bayless on the podcast this week. Erik really likes him, I’m a little more worried about what his minutes will look like once Barbosa gets back. Still, at this point, I’d much rather take a shot on Bayless and hope he sticks at SG or moves Calderon to the bench than waste anymore time with the now injured Nelson.

    • Cap

In a H2H points league I’m wondering if I should pick up either MarShon Brooks, Vince Carter, or J. Dudley and drop any of C. Parsons, R. Fernandez, or L. Kleiza? Thanks for all your help!

    • GregSchulz

(Trying to get this into a readable format this time) I just traded Scola for Blatche and that trade couldn’t have been more of a disaster lol. Scola had his best week, and Blatche hurt his shoulder, got benched, and hurt his calf, so I ended up having to drop him. Here’s my team right now (10-Team, 9-Cat. H2H)

      2. LaMarcus Aldridge
      3. Josh Smith
      4. Dorrel Wright
      5. Samuel Dalembert
      6. Kemba Walker
      7. David West
      8. Paul George
      9. James Johnson
      10. Rodney Stuckey
      (Bn) Anthony Morrow
      (Bn) Rudy Fernandez
      (Bn) Jared Dudley
      (Bn) Marcus Thornton
      (IR) Manu Ginobli

How do you guys feel my team stacks up once Marcus Thornton comes back? Also, who do you feel are the most dropable guys on my team? Normally I would say Fernandez, but he pushed me over in FG% for me to get the win last week so I am inclined to keep him for the moment lol. • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels
    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Is Varejao a C only in your league? If he’s an F, I’d go Varejao/Beaubois (that’s what I tried to say in my first comment, although it’s badly worded). If Varejao is a C only, then Beaubois/Brand might actually be the way to go. It’s riskier than Varejao/Brand, but the potential is much higher.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Running the YTD numbers and making some adjustments for recent performance, here is the % better or worse your team is on average compared to the average team in your league (with Thornton in the lineup):

      pts 3%
      reb 5%
      ast -15%
      stl 1%
      blk 20%
      to 0%
      3pm -1%
      fgp -1%
      ftp 2%

This means that your team is 3% better on average in points than your opponent on a weekly basis. So other than assists (your weakness) and blocks (your strength) I’ve got you as pretty much league average. Given your weakness in assists, I’d argue that someone like Stuckey is probably the least good fit with your team and you may actually want to trade or drop him before anyone else.

Morrow is definitely going to be in for some good run now that the team recently announced that Marshon Brooks has a broken toe. And in terms of the wire guys you mentioned, Jerryd Bayless has the most upside at the moment, but isn’t the greatest fit with your team either. Channing Frye would be a good fit if he could actually put together a good game, but I’d just keep him on your watch list for now. I don’t really trust Kleiza at all.

I’d try to look for a rebounder or three point shooter on the wire, those seem like they’re the cats you should be able to most easily improve. Good luck.

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

I think Kleiza is the only guy I’d consider picking up given your team. Stuckey has probably been playing the worst recently, but if he starts playing well again, he’s better then the free agents available.

I would give Marvin Williams at least one more game to prove himself before I’d even start thinking about picking him up. Frye seems like he might be trying to set a new record for going from super fantasy sleeper to out of the league. Not sure what the current record is, but 365 days would probably beat it.

    • http://twitter.com/conradburry Conrad Burry

yeah, Varejao is only a C in my league. I may roll the dice with Roddy / Brand…this may be Roddy’s best chance to have a productive week.

    • GregSchulz

Thanks.. I’ll probably just stick with Stuckey for now, because the next two teams I play have injury problems and I have a good chance of winning in assists. I’ll probably also hold onto Dudley for now unless he struggles in his next game..

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

Good call. Pau was after Chauncey as far as performance was concerned.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

yup. FT% is nasty. Otherwise we’d have D12 having LOTN every time MAGIC has a game.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

Go. Do it. I like the move.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

I agree on Patrick’s mini-rankings based on recent performances. I’m a biased Parsons fanboy, so I’m going to project at least a couple of solid games within the next four.

would you trade kyle lowry and brandon jennings for chris paul and kemba walker.  10 team, H2H daily change league

      k lowry
      b jennings
      m conley
      j jack
      lou williams
      jj redick
      thornton
      carmelo

      K-Love
      G monroe
      M. Gasol
      Chris Bosh
      RIp Hamilton

My team is pretty good so far.  Lowry has started to regress slightly and it might be a good time to flip B jennings, but when checking the production they are both top 20 players, so far.  Chris Paul is definitely an attractive piece to add though….any help is appreciated…thanks guys.  Love your stuff.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Unless the guy you’d be dropping to slot in Wes Matthews is really, really bad, I’d pass on that trade. You’ll be taking a significant downgrade in KG from Millsap for a small upgrade in Matthews, most likely.

    • Jim

I have a pretty good hybrid team that does well in 3s, Rebs, Assists, Steals, and Blocks. My %s and TOs are average and my points are 9th. It’s a 12×14 league. Im in 1st by 1/2 game. Another owner is looking to move Wade in a 2-for-1 due to some bad injury luck. Here’s my team:

G- Lowry, Curry, Harden, A Miller, Teague
F- Pau, Wright, Jamison, Diaw, Amir
      C- McGee, Varejao
Scrubs- Taj Gibson and Jason Smith (both streamed as necessary)

I was thinking of leading with either Lowry or Harden plus a big man. What deal do you think makes sense for me, if any?

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

I would take that and never look back. Chris Paul is a Top 3 player and Kyle Lowry is starting to slide down the rankings. Jennings shows on the 28th that he’ll still have bad games once in a while. Just about any trade where you get Chris Paul, LeBron, Durant, or Kevin Love is a good trade.

    • Pingback: Give Me The Rock » Blog Archive » Day 38 of 124: Where Blake Griffin Tears a Hole in the Space-Time Continuum

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Totally agree with Nels. Now is the time to sell high on both Lowry and Jennings.

    • Chris

Thanks Patrick. But I actually sent out gasol. I like your averages with wade on my team though. That is what I was going for.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Well, Lowry has been so good this season that he’s probably worth a 1-for-1 deal for Wade at the moment. I might start with something like Harden + Jamison for Wade and see if that’s enough. That would be a nice trade for your team (provided Wade stays healthy) as it should improve your position in boards, assists, blocks, steals and FG% depending on who you fill Jamison’s spot with.

If it turns out he wants Lowry, I don’t think you have to throw in much as a kicker – maybe Amir or something like that. That version of the trade is not quite as good a fit for your team – you’ll take a hit in assists and it’ll be a wash in steals, but as I’ve been saying, now is a good time to sell high on Lowry if you can.
