Line of the Night:/Waiver Wire Line of the Night: Carmelo Anythony returned for the Knicks after missing two games, but it was Landry Fields (3.04) continuing his recent string of strong performances who took both the overall LotN and by virtue of his 43% ownership, the WWLotN. Fields had 18 points (4 threes, 7-10 from the field, 0-0 from the line), 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and 0 turnovers. The Give Me The Rock fantasy basketball player rater always loves it when a guy can make a few threes, get a huge defensive number like 5 steals, and not turn the ball over. That said, the only other really guady (ie: non-efficiency type line) last night came from Anderson Varejao (1.27) and his 20 points and 20 rebounds. But when Ryan Anderson can get 20 rebounds in a game… well, it almost makes Kevin Love look like just an average guy.

    Honorable Mentions:
Paul George (2.53) led Indiana over New Jersey with a very efficient 24 points (4 threes, 8-11 from the field, 4-4 from the line), and 2 steals. And since fantasy owners don’t care that the Nets lost, let’s mention Anthony Morrow (1.86) with 28 points (5 threes), and Deron Williams (1.63) (who of course I’m playing against this week) with 34 points (4 threes) and 7 assists. I’m sure those people with “Team Wins” as a category are frustrated by the loss, but you kind of have to take it with performances like those. You also have to tell your Commissioner that if they’re going to include a “bonus” or “fun” or just “extra” category, Team Wins is, in my opinion, the dumbest one you could add. The whole point is that it’s fantasy basketball, where you try to get a team of the best players from around the league and it doesn’t matter who they play for as long as they put up huge numbers.

Speaking of teams that lost, Al Harrington (1.85) put up 23 points (3 threes, 4-4 from the line), 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals in the loss to Memphis. Across the court Rudy Gay (1.75) rebounded (pun intended) from No Field Goal game with 20 points (4-4 from the line), 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks while Marc Gasol (1.57) had another strong game putting up 20 points, 13 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks.

I’m not sure why coaches play their starters when they’re up by 24 at half time… I mean, I guess you have to play somebody, but to give the notoriously unhealthy Andrew Bynum (1.82) 32 minutes of playing time in a season like this one, I have to question if Mike Brown is actually capable of coaching an NBA team. I’m sure fantasy owners won’t complain about the 20 points (8-11 from the field, 4-4 from the line), 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks (at least if Bynum isn’t injured at the end of the week). I mean, the Knicks were only up by 14 at half time, so I can understand the starters there playing 30+ minutes because they pushed the lead in the 3rd quarter and won by 27… but when you’re already up 24? At least Brown managed to keep Bryant and Gasol in for only 27 and 29 minutes respectively (much to the disappointment of fantasy owners – don’t worry guys, it’s a long season – you’ll need those two to be rested when the Lakers are fighting for playoff position during the fantasy basketball playoffs).

Joe Johnson (1.78) continued to his renaissance of racking up stats with Al Horford out: 30 points (3 threes, 13-18 from the field), and 4 assists. Nothing to it.

Tyreke Evans (1.62) had a near triple-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists, adding 3 steals just for good measure.

    ***

Pick Up Lines: Stephen Curry (0.27) had 8 assists but went 1-7 from the field and played a few less minutes due to that struggle with shooting, which allowed Brandon Rush (1.46) to put up 20 points (4 threes, 6-10 from the field, 4-4 from the line), and 6 rebounds (22% owned). Rush has been pretty decent all season, and sits at #96 on the Player Rater. Even with his minutes capped at about 27 max, I would think he’d be owned in more leagues than 22% simply due to the fact that there are a lot of leagues with more than 12 teams (though, at 96, he should be owned in 12 teams leagues, too).

Troy Murphy (1.40) played nearly a season-high 27 minutes for the Lakers (because of the blowout) and ended up with 12 points (4 threes), 6 rebounds, and 4 assists (6% owned). His minutes are still very inconsistent and he’s only averaging 18 on the year, so leave him for deep leagues.

Alonzo Gee (1.09) was part of a furious 4th quarter comeback for the Cavs that just fell short. He put up 11 points, but it was the 4 steals that really drew the Player Rater in (4% owned). Gee is up to 25 minutes per game and averaging 1.6 steals in that time. He’s not a great fantasy asset, but it seems like he should be owned in more than 4% of leagues. (Especially when teammate Ramon Sessions is owned in 31% of leagues and only ranked 200 compared to Gee sitting at 164)

Jermaine O’Neal (1.05) returned from a bruised left knee to score 12 points (5-7 from the field), with 2 blocks (5% owned). Give him a couple games to see if he can keep getting 25+ minutes and if he does, then don’t hesitate. He can put up big boards and blocks for you when he starts for the Celtics.

If you’re looking for a short (or possibly long) term fill-in at Center and don’t trust Jermain O’Neal, then perhaps Ed Davis will be more to your liking. Davis had 11 and 11, making all 3 of his free throws and blocking a shot. Even though Amir Johnson is starting in place of Andrea Bargnani, it looks like the Raptors still don’t trust him to really get the job done. Davis has played more minutes of the bench the last two games, and while he’s not going to win anything by himself, his contributions in rebounds, steals, and blocks are better than nothing.

Biggest Loser: Still owned in 62% of leagues, that might not last long if Brandon Knight (-1.04) keeps this up. After coming in second (to last) last night, Knight managed just 9 points on 38% shooting with 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 3 turnovers.

It wasn’t a great night from DeMar DeRozan (-0.70), but that seems to be about how his lines go these days. After scoring 27 in the Raptors last game, DeMar had only 9 points (3-9 from the floor, 3-4 free throws) with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 turnovers.

      Hey Guys,
Still loving this site & analysis of all the teams coming in.
Im in 10tm H2H Daily changes league.

      Holiday
      Harden
      LeBron
      Dirk
      DeMarcus
      Felton
      Noah
      DeAndre
      Wright
      Mayo
      Gooden
      Ariza
      BDavis

Ive been counter-offered Chris Paul & Brandon Knight for Dirk, Demarcus, Davis.
This was in response to my Dirk, Felton, Davis for Paul & Knight offer.

I dont want to lose DeMarcus but can I cover it now that Gooden is in or should I counter offer Gooden/some other combo.
I want to keep boards, but gain the assists. Knight’s form is also a worry.

What do you think of the trade & other options?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Ed Davis – deep league recommendation on the podcast this week! I also picked him up in the GMTR auction league in Sunday (and kicked Jason Kidd to the curb) as my team crumbles under the weight of injuries. I love it when reality makes it look like we know what we’re talking about.

    • Mike

Is it foolish to go and stash ginobili in a standard 12 team daychange league? I’m also dealing with injuries from rondo, hawes and batum.

    • Orchix

I woke up this morning and found batum on my waiver wire, problem is, I’m not quite sure who to drop to pick him up. I’m not sure when he’ll return, I’m hearing rumors of thurs or weekend. I’m in a 10 team 9 cat, with dd replacing  tos. I’m thinking of dropping one of James Johnson, Brendan Haywood, or Jimmer for him. What do you guys think? thanks!

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Not entirely foolish… though it may end up being a fool’s errand. If you’re doing well in your league and the rest of your team is strong enough to carry a few categories, then it’s probably a net positive. Doesn’t sound like anyone’s in a hurry to get Manu, Hawes, or Batum back on the court though. But it does sound like Rondo will be back soon, so the you’ll still just have 3 injured guys. Honestly, I’m surprised someone dropped Manu in a 12-team league even with daily changes.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

This season, you can expect that guys are always going to take longer to get back on the court than expected, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Batum is out until next week. Still, I’d definitely look to add him for either Haywood or Jimmer, depending on which type of stats you can spare. Long term, Ferdette is going to be buried again on the Kings bench when Thornton returns and makes the most sense to drop, but short-term he’s likely to outplay Haywood this week .

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

I’d say they probably go in reverse order of what you listed: Drop Jimmer first, then Haywood, then JJ. I checked the numbers for the season and the last week and the results are the same. I think it’s worth dropping any of those three for Batum.

    • Orchix

Would you recommend picking up Batum or Tony Allen off the waivers? Tony Allen is looking interesting, but I have good ball thiefs in Conley and Teague.

    • Jimmer!

To piggyback on the Jimmer talk, thoughts in Jimmer vs Baron Davis ROY? Depth chart vs injury issues. Torn over here …

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Running the numbers, the trade is sort of a wash. Assuming everyone is healthy (including Baron Davis) your team’s strengths are boards and blocks with weaknesses in threes and TOs. Depending on who you pick up as the third in that deal off waivers, the trade will probably erode your strength in boards and blocks, but then gives you strengths in assists and steals. So you’ll sort of be moving from a big ball team to a smaller one.

Personally, I’d stay away from Knight, who has seem to hit a wall. A little too much risk there for me. Maybe try to work just Paul for Dirk/Felton or Dirk/Davis. That trade would have similar benefits (pluses to assists, steals and %) while not destroying your current advantage in rebounds.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I’d only pick up Allen if you really need the steals boost. Otherwise, he’s not doing too much else on the court and I’d rather have Batum.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I don’t see how Jimmer can have consistent fantasy value this season when Thornton is in the lineup. But for the next week plus while Thornton is sidelined, he should be a very good source of threes and points.

Long term, Davis is going to be the winner. There is a lot not to like about Davis (including that injury history) but the Knicks cannot wait to get him back in the lineup, plus the analysis suggests that the Knicks offense and D’Antoni provide a significant related performance bump to their PGs. I mean, just look at the fortunes of Raymond Felton since he left the Knicks.

    • Jeremy

What’s goin on with Lowry’s minutes? I understand he’s in a shooting slump but at least when he was getting in the high 30′s low 40′s he was putting up big assist #s still, now he’s gotten only in the 20s the past 3 games and put up really abysmal numbers all around. Lockout nonsense or something more serious going on?

    • http://twitter.com/conradburry Conrad Burry

Avg-based pts league(s) (all stats = 1pt, asts = 2pts, TOs = -1pt): Drop P. George or drop B. Knight to pick up Ariza? Thanks!

    • http://twitter.com/conradburry Conrad Burry

I second this…maybe Kyle’s getting run-down? I need him to ball though. He’s my source of success thusfar in all my leagues (Got him in 4 of 4, and lead 3 of 4 leagues’ standings)!

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Brandon Knight maybe, but no way I’d drop George.

    • http://twitter.com/conradburry Conrad Burry

Yea. As of now, my final 2 starting forwards come from Beas, Brand, and Gooden. My 1 starting flex player comes from P. George, B. Knight, and Varejao (and whoever i dont start in the 2 forward poitions, of course). What ya think?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Sounds like part lockout nonsense, part Goran Dragic. Nearly all PGs are having a tough go of it this year thanks to the crazy shortened season. Lowry started off the season on fire, but he was playing above his head at the time and now he’s regressing back to the mean, so to speak. The shooting slump is really, really ugly looking though.

In terms of his drop in minutes over the last three games, it sounds like Kevin McHale is starting to use Goran Dragic in particular and the Rockets’ reserves in general more lately because they have been playing well together. The shooting and assist numbers will improve again for Lowry, but I would be a little worried about Dragic creeping in on his minutes from here on out.

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Those seem like pretty decent choices, except Knight. The only thing he’s got going is the 2 pts for assists in your league, but even that is hit or miss. Is there someone better than Ariza though? He’s playing pretty poorly right now.

    • Drew

I just got offered Ellis for Wall, I’m thinking yes, but I see that Ellis is in a slump right now, what do you guys think?

Oh also, I think what you doing is awesome, you guys have helped me a lot in my league.

    • Dao Mi

      Hey Guys,

20-man league, tried going big ball but due to amare’s anemic reb #’s have now switched gears to slow ball, just want some opinion on the following trade:

      I sent
      Brandon Knight
      Marvin Williams
      Amare

      for

      Tyreke Evans
      Tony Allen
      Chauncey Billups

      thought?

    • Chris

Should I drop Hawes and pick up General Greivis? 12 team h2h and I’m in first just getting tired of waiting for spencer.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Hawes is currently working on the longest “he might be back next game” streak in the history of the NBA. Sounds like he’s out for at least the rest of this week and still has no timetable for return. He’s running and practicing with the team, but according to him, it doesn’t feel right when he “gets up on his toes”. I guess as soon as he feels ready, he’ll be back on the court.

So, just like last week and the week before, Hawes could be back for the Sixers next game or he could continue to miss a bunch of games. It’s a total crap shoot at this point. If your team is winning with him on your bench, I guess I’d continue to sit on him. If you’re having trouble or have a bunch of other injured guys right now, then I say drop him and at least get a warm body in there.

Greivis was actually our waiver wire guy of the night in today’s post. He only has value as long as Eric Gordon is out – but he has been getting 25 minutes a game and is one of those rare sources of assists off the wire. I think he does make a sneaky good add for the short-term. Jordan Farmar is another guy you might want to look at too as the Nets are really banged up right now. Or someone like Ed Davis or Trevor Booker is probably going to give you more along the lines of what Hawes would.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Ellis for Wall, yeah, I’d make that trade. In general, when guys are slumping is the perfect time to trade for them (as long as the slump isn’t injury related). You’ll generally be able to get them at the cheapest and even this short season is still relatively long – just be confident that it all usually evens out in the end.

Good luck! Glad we’ve been able to help you out.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

It’s a trade that sounds bad on the face of it since you’d be giving up the biggest name in Amare, but based on the way they’ve all been playing this season, it’s not a bad trade for you. Your basically giving up about 6 boards a game, a tiny bit of threes and some FG% for 2 points, 3.6 assists, 1.3 steals and FT%. So if you want to move smaller – it’s a good trade for you.

Of course, if you make this trade, hope that Amare doesn’t bounce back to what we expected out of him this year. If Amare bounces back, you’ll actually lose out in points, blocks and even more in FG% and the trade becomes a net negative for you. My guess is that Amare falls somewhere in the middle of where he is now and what he did last year, probably making this trade even money and whether yu should do it or not depends on if you want your team to go smaller.

    • Chris

Thanks Patrick. I’m currently 2 games out in first and am winning my matchup 8-1 so far this week. Hawes being out is just really bothering me. And at this point I feel like he is going to come back just to get injured again. Back problems can really linger. Ed Davis was the other pickup I was looking at because my team plays big anyway. Decisions, decisions…

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Good point about Hawes – just because he comes back doesn’t mean he’s going to stay healthy.

    • Jeremy

would you drop JRich or Afflalo for Tayshaun (I need some sf help plus I think he’ll be solid)? I’m leaning towards dropping JRich
