In this week’s podcast, we discuss the latest injury news surrounding guys like Manu Ginobili, who left Saturday’s game with a strained oblique, as well as Nene Hilario and Drew Gooden. We also talk about the highly anticipated return of Brook Lopez, J.R. Smith, Wilson Chandler, Baron Davis and, of course, Carmelo Anthony and how that will affect Linsanity and the Knicks.

We also throw out some Eastern and Western conference fantasy teams by looking at cumulative WARP scores on the GMTR player rater. Finally, we give out our waiver wire recommendations for the week.

I’m planning on dropping Gordon Hayward… Should I pick up Isaiah Thomas or Danny Green?

    • Velvet

Is Manu worth keeping? and when he recovers do you think he will produce his pre-injury numbers? Thanks!

      ISAIAH!

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Thomas has the much higher upside. Definitely go with him.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

Yes, definitely worth keeping. Sounds like his injury isn’t as bad as first feared. Looks like he won’t miss much time at all with the injury.

      Hey Patrick,

You did a phenomenal job of selecting who I should start in a daily last week, so I thought I should ride your advice while you are hot.

I need to start 2 out of Al Harrington, Gustavo Ayon, Marco Bellinelli, and Sammy Dalembert.

      Thoughts?

    • kelly

I’m torn and am wondering your thoughts. Would you hold onto Gooden or drop him and pick up Amir Johnson? I’m in a H2H points league and I’m not in love with Johnson, but he’s been putting up pretty decent numbers lately and Gooden seems like a lot of things are falling apart and even if he’s back relatively soon he’ll be injured and out again before the end of the season.

    • http://twitter.com/okomodo Johan K

I have Manu, and he’s out. I also have Wilson Chandler, and he won’t play until late Feb/early March. I expect Manu to have the same timeline. What’s your projection of Isaiah Thomas providing he’s starting? He either starts from now on or starts only for the next few games to see whether the small lineup works. I’m trying to make the playoff (5th right now) in a HxH 8 Cat Daily League. I really don’t want to drop Manu since I’ve been patient with him. So, Chandler or Thomas? I could use some warm bodies here. Thanks.

    • Justin

Should I drop Splitter, Bargnani or Manu for Speights, Ayon, Chandler or JR Smith?

    • Jeremy

Last second lineup advice, Frye or Vasquez?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

Hayward has fallen by the wayward trail. Thomas!!!

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

We still have to see if he will produce “pre-injury numbers” but I do believe that Manu will, at the very least, be a quality producer of PTS, 3s, STL, and some AST.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

I’d go with Al and Gustavo.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

Gooden should remain more consistent overall. If you’re in a daily changes league, or are in need of big man #s, go ahead and drop him. If you’re in a weekly set league and use Gooden as “extra juice” for a solid team, I’d hold onto him.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

PHO vs WAS and NO vs OKC. I’d go with Frye as Vasquez might get Ibaka-d.

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Erik

I would drop Splitter. JR or Ayon look good to me moving forward.

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

I dropped Splitter in 2 leagues this week… Might be time to bring back the old Add/Drop Report…

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Agreed. Anyone playing Washington should have a pretty favorable matchup, even at C with McGee.

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

But I picked up and dropped Hayward twice last week! Man…

    • Justin

Thanks Erik.  I made the Ayon for Splitter move about an hour ago.  Good to know someone agrees.

    • http://nelswadycki.com/ Nels

Two guys out is tough with daily changes. It looks like Thomas’s Per 36 minute numbers are actually pretty good compared to Chandler, so if he can continue to get the time, I’d say he’s a better option. The only risk is if you pick him up and his playing time goes back to his 18 minutes… Seems like it might be tough for Evans to continue playing SF against teams with taller guys…

    • http://twitter.com/okomodo Johan K

Thanks for your advice, Nels. I weathered the storm, when I had B Lopez, Manu, and E Gordon all were out. Obviously, I’m not there yet. But, at this point, I need all the good productions I can get. Thanks again!

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

It’s a bit late now (I was busy with parental duties), but for the record I would have agreed with Erik.

Hello there! I have Jeremy Lin and I’ve been trying to throw around some offers but not a lot of people are willing to trade for him. Funny thing is, one of those trades was Manu Ginobili for Jeremy Lin before he was injured, and now the owner is willing to trade for him after he got injured hahaha. Should I pull the trigger? 12 team Yahoo H@612207385df5c625b2141cae0eac04f6:disqus H Daily league. I’m currently in 4th place, 4.5 games back out of first place and 2.5 games ahead of sixth place. First six make the playoffs. Here’s the rest of my team.

      john wall
      tony parker
      joe johnson
      kyrie irving
      kevin durant
      ryan anderson
      greg monroe
      andrea barganani
      jr smith
      landry fields
      jeremy lin
      nikola pekovic
      grevis vazquez

Also, is it a bad idea to have too many players of one team on your team? I currently have three Knicks and will have two Knicks and two Spurs if I do the trade. Thanks for your time!

    • Ericgordonsucks

EDIT: Just picked up Udoh for Landry Fields

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CO77Q3BA73DN4PH2KGO2NLQDHA Mashimaro

would u drop Maggette for Udoh?

    • http://givemetherock.com/ Patrick

I have no problem if you want to drop Maggette, who doesn’t do much on the court other than score a bit. But I’m not sold on Udoh going forward. First, Andris Biedrins missed the game with flu-like symptoms, which is why he got the start and 38 minutes. Second, his per 38 minute averages for this season are something like 8.5 and 7, so the 19 points he scored is a huge outlier based on his game. He would block 2-3 shots a game in a starting role which would have it’s uses in some leagues, but I’d only pick up Udoh in deeper leagues if I needed the blocks, or if Biedrins fell off a cliff and we never heard from him again.

Ok, comparing your team to the average team in your league (assuming all your players are healthy), this the percentage better or worse you are on a weekly basis compared to league average. Note I am using the 2011-12 YTD stats with some adjustments for recent play over the last week or two.

This is your team currently with Lin:

      pts 24%
      reb -1%
      ast 30%
      stl 4%
      blk 2%
      to -33%
      3pm 13%
      fgp 3%
      ftp 3%

So what this is saying, your team is 24% better in points than the average team in your league. And this is your team with Manu:

      pts 21%
      reb 0%
      ast 19%
      stl -4%
      blk 4%
      to -18%
      3pm 18%
      fgp 4%
      ftp 5%

So trading Lin for Manu reduces your steals and assists, but helps you in other areas like threes, TOs and percentages. If you think Lin is the real deal and will keep up his high level of play, then the trade is about even value, or even a net loss for you. If you think Lin will decline with Melo back in the lineup (and Manu can actually stay healthy) the trade will be a win for you.

Having a lot of guys on the same team doesn’t really have too much effect overall, other than making you slightly more prone to really good or bad weeks based on the schedule, although I’d guess you’d need to have like half your team made up of one squad for that to really have an effect. The Spurs have one of the best fantasy playoff schedules in the league, so no issues with owning a lot of them.
